Retailer pulls 'Jesus' cosmetics from shelves

SINGAPORE- A cosmetics line that extolled the virtues of "Looking Good for Jesus" has been pulled from stores in Singapore after a number of complaints from shoppers, according to media reports Tuesday.

Promising to "Redeem your reputation and more," the product line included a "virtuous vanilla"-flavored lip balm and a "Get Tight with Christ" hand and body cream, The Straits Times said.

Wing Tai Retail, which manages the British retailer Topshop, removed the line late last month after receiving complaints.

"These products trivialize Jesus Christ and Christianity," it quoted Nick Chui, 27, one of the complainants, as saying. "There are also sexual innuendoes in the messages and the way Jesus is portrayed in these products."

One product has packaging with the image of Jesus wearing a bright white robe as he looks toward the heavens, while a heavily made-up blonde woman with an arm draped across his shoulder gazes dreamily at his face.

"Why would anyone use religious figures to promote vanity products? It's very disrespectful and distasteful," the report quoted 24-year-old accountant Grace Ong, as saying.

An unnamed Wing Tai Retail spokesman apologized to anyone who was offended.
I thought a lot of the folks here would get a kick out of the products and the over-sensitive customers.

Just how many conservative Christians are there in Singapore?

Gee, he hasn't noticed until Lord Jeeeyzus was in an advertisement that offended his precious sensibilities, that there is in fact a shit-tonne of sexual innuendo in advertisements?

Who gives a fuck if they trivialise Jeebus and Christianity? Sorry, but some crazy dude who thought he was the son of Gaawwd and "sacrificed" himself is someone who should be trivialised.

Why would anyone use _______ to promote _______? Perhaps to draw attention to what they're trying to promote? Why would anyone use delusional people to promote the invisible man in the sky. It's very disrespectful and distasteful.

Sounds like idolatry to me (guess it's kind of hard worshipping that invisible tyrant in the sky)

Growing stronger in each passing decade.
Its odd, but christians don't actually realise how deep a lockhold they had on politics and power over the last 40 decades. It has only been in the last decade or so that christian organisations have "woken" up to the fact that they have potentially huge political influence. If you trace the history of politics and media opinion, the fact that the elite business community has traditionally been anglicised meant that traditional christian values and insitutions had strong roots in the country. Barriers against realising political influence could be that up till the late 90s, they were a minority along with the presence of strict censorship laws along with limited access to media.

Unfortunately things has changed. The materialism of the 80s and the resulting spiritual backlash has caused an upswing in support. Relaxed censorship and new media forms has led to increased canvasing , making it easier for christian organisations to voice their complaints as well as lobby.
We can see signs of this in lobbying against movie censorship, arguing around the need to "respect" Christianity. The baggage from Maria Hertogh is still strong...........

There is something interesting though... Conservative social mores are more and more transmitted along christian lines. However, liberal political mores are increasingly prevalent amongst christians. One wonder how such a generation would handle the inherent conflicts between both worldviews. Or whether even said party recognise the conflict in the first place.
