Earthquake all over England
Did anyone else just feel that? The title is such because there are posts from people all over the country asking the same thing all over the net right now... heh. Twas rather intense here in Manchester, though I am 12 floors up.

I didn't feel anything, but then again I'm in Bristol. The Internet connection got messed up though a few minutes ago, that could be something to do with it...

UK Earthquake!
Holy fuck, that just scared the shit out of me! News so new it's not even in the news yet!
I was sat watching MTV 2 when my couch shook. My first thought was that someone was in the house and I promptly became fucking scared!
So I came upstairs, lo and behold, on msn a guy in Bolton and another in London are asking me if I felt the Earthquake. Now, London is apparently 163 miles (262 km) away, so that's not bad!

What was it, like, a 2.0 or something?

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Are you sure it's not a coincidental case of indigestion and stomach rumblings?

as for what it was, no idea, just don't think we've had one felt across such large parts of the country for a while. The tower block I am in shook quite severely, I will be interested to find where the epicentre was.
Edit: http://geofon.gfz-potsdam.de/db/eqpage. ... fz2008eadu Magnitude 5 apparently.

Yarp. I live in Lancashire. The BBC has received calls from people in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Manchester, Berkshire and the West Midlands about a "quake".
The tremor could be felt in central Birmingham at about 0100 GMT but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.
It was actually pretty mild, but the whole house swelled, first I thought there was someone breaking in, then I thought the wind was blowing the roof off. Then it stopped and I had a load of adrenaline with nowhere to put it. That's why the OP is a little ineloquent compared to my usual posts.

Maybe it was that 41-stone guy who kept calling emergency services out to his house, and he fell out of bed.

The BGS are reporting it as a 5.1, but I reckon that'll probably get adjusted down to the USGS report soon.havokeff wrote:Hey, 4.7. Not bad. Those are always a good time.
Any EBC's had any damage? My girlfriend texted me right after it happened from (She's in Norwich), but I've been unable to get a call or a text over there to see what's up.
Judging by the epicenter location, it's about 20 miles from where I used to live in Lincolnshire. I never remember any kind of activity on that side of the country before. Surely not a fault? More likely it was an earth shift?

I suppose it'll all be described in detail in the UK media soon enough. Just wish I could get a text through to the family. Dad's generally waking up about this time and I'd like to find out if there's anything going on damage wise.

A little weaker than the one we had about 5 months ago. 4-5 earthquakes are always good for a giggle.havokeff wrote:Hey, 4.7. Not bad. Those are always a good time.

What's nice about these "little" quakes, is that it tests the capability of the phone network to handle the sudden flux of calls and texts. I was having dinner with a friend during the quake mentioned above. As soon as it was over, everyone whipped out their cell phones and were calling friends/family. Me, my friend, and most of the patrons ( from what I can tell) couldn't get through, though we finally did after about 15 minues of trying. Kinda makes you wonder how well communications were to continue had a bigger quake hit.
How old were you in 89? Back then they worked for dick. Hopefully the cell network won't get all clusterfucked like the land lines did back then, but I doubt it. The problem is everyone calling in and out at once, and that isn't going to change if we have another big one.SpacedTeddyBear wrote:A little weaker than the one we had about 5 months ago. 4-5 earthquakes are always good for a giggle.havokeff wrote:Hey, 4.7. I felt it, pretty impressive stuff for my first quake. The whole house was shaking quite violently, and considering I was half asleep, I was impressed that my brain got to "earthquake", then to "must be a shallow one" and then to "I wonder if there'll be an aftershock". Didn't feel the 4am aftershock, but it was all quite cool. I imagine it might have been a bit more alarming if I'd been fully awake.
