People like William F. Buckley Jr. and George W. Bush just go to show what a man can accomplish through grit, determination, and the backing of your fabulously wealthy and influential oil baron father.
Also:
"At National Review, Buckley became known as a discoverer of talented conservative writers, including syndicated columnist George F. Will and New York Times columnist David Brooks."
Faux-intellectual George F. Will and worthless hack David Brooks are the best "discoveries" that they could find from Buckley's fifty-year career in conservative publishing. Wow, just wow.

That's nothing more than a symptom of the complete worthlessness of the current Republican party. The man was important in that he tried to supply the conservative movement (at the time best known for wild conspiracy theories like that the government was secretly controlled by commies and fluoridated water was Soviet poison) with some kind of intellectual veneer. Still, he couldn't help but put himself firmly behind McCarthyism.HemlockGrey wrote:As far as conservatives go he was a lot better than the current lot.

Now Buckley can do circlejerks in hell with his two main mancrushes: Francisco Franco and Augusto Pinochet.
Buckley's Nazi rag has given this country over fifty years of racist, paranoid, fascist agitprop -which this country needed like the Titanic needed more cold water in her hold.
Here's Buckley getting goaded into making a fool of himself on national television in 1968:

You'll notice that like Darkstar, he pretends to be all Miss Manners -until Gore Vidal called him on his bullshit. Then he showed what a demented fucktard he really is.

Wow, 1968. Were you even ALIVE then elftard?
I think 40 years might change a person, if nothing else than to mature. I just watched the video, and Buckly is polite until the other person calls him a crypto nazi.
Just how does being called a nazi = being called on your bullshit?
He repsonded in kind to a personal insult, which only shows he was the equal to vidal in bad manners.

ghetto edit. Bear in mind he is still full of bullshit, but acted neither demented, nor foolish, except in your pinhead brain. That is par for the course from you, as anyone who disagrees with you past a ceratin point that you arbitrarily decide is no longer holding a different world view, but sick or evil. This shows more about you than him. I await the wall of quotes, and your "I got the last word in, so I must have won" apraoch.

Jesus fucking Christ, yet again?
Always when someone dies or it's memorial day the same story.
Aren't you tired people? Lefties vs right-wings. Always when it's someone of the other political spectrum people will come and flame, or say why the sucker wasn't worth it. Flamewar ensues. Why not post memorials and death news in the HoS directly? Because after all it's where it's going to land at the end.

What is the real difference between saying that someone is full of bullshit and calling him various insults? The fact is that the guy did found National Review, which is an absolutely disgusting crypto-racist rag and everyone knows it.EmperorChrostas the Cruel wrote:ghetto edit. He also wrote that Martin Luther King belonged in prison, and when King was assassinated, implied that he was asking for it. His own magazine just last week ran a piece where the author wondered if Obama wasn't the product of a sinister breeding program combining Darkies and DA JOOOOOOOOZ, with communist midichlorians thrown in for good measure.

So far I don't see that this is a worthy person to be commemorated.
If that's "a lot better than the current lot", then the current conservotards must be evil incarnate.

Fixed. And no, we're not tired because racism and all who support racism are human trash and should belong to that category, all right.Wedge wrote:Aren't you tired people? Lefties vs racists.

In any normal country this man wouldn't receive any commemoration beyond the line "crazy racist arsehole dies" on page 12 of a local newspaper. For some reason the US likes to indulge in a number of people that quite frankly the world is better off without.Wedge wrote:Jesus fucking Christ, yet again?

Conceded that this asshole isn't someone who it's worth to mourn (I almost didn't knew him before this thread). What I'm tired of, is people posting news of someone dying or commemorating a death or day and then the thread becoming into a flamefest. Granted that with this asshole it isn't the case, because I don't see many people defending him, but remember the Reagan or Rachel Corrie thread?Stas Bush wrote:Fixed. Wouldn't it be better to make a new rule, like posting this things in Testing or HoS. Or maybe that the person making the thread should give motives in the OP as to why this dead person is actually worth to mourn of take a minute of silence? Maybe then they would actually think BEFORE posting it?
Apart from that I'm all for fighting racism, because I was a victim of it. But like I said I only knew this guy very little before this thread (from a discussion with Noam Chomsky).

There's a link to the Obama conspiracy theory in the Obama assassination thread. The column was originally posted at Neo-Nazi er, National Review Online. As for the quotes about King, this web site has the text of an article by Vidal where he quotes Buckley at length from not only their TV appearances, but from Buckley's column:Stas Bush wrote:So far I don't see that this is a worthy person to be commemorated.
If that's "a lot better than the current lot", then the current conservotards must be evil incarnate.Elfdart wrote:He also wrote that Martin Luther King belonged in prison, and when King was assassinated, implied that he was asking for it. Link
William Buckley wrote:"I am convinced that Martin Luther King belongs behind bars along with everyone else who conspires to break the law."
"The martyrdom [King] seemed sometimes almost to be seeking may commend him to history and to God, but not likely to Scarsdale, New York, which has never credited the charge that the white community of America conspires to ensure the wretchedness of brothers of Martin Luther King . . ."
For more, I'd recommend a book review by Robert Sherill (reviewing John Judis' biography of Buckley) in The Nation. The web site Sadly No! has also run quite a few vintage quotes from this asshole. Unlike other racists such as George Wallace and Robert Byrd, Buckley never renounced his dislike of black people and contempt for their rights as citizens (or human beings, for that matter)."If the entire Negro population in the South were suddenly given the vote and were to use it as a block and pursuant to directives handed down by some more demagogic Negro leaders, chaos would ensue."
Considering the send-off given to that other bigoted fucktard Jerry Falwell, and the fact that Buckley wasn't nearly as influential, I think the black armbands will be put away by Monday at the latest. In any normal country this man wouldn't receive any commemoration beyond the line "crazy racist arsehole dies" on page 12 of a local newspaper. For some reason the US likes to indulge in a number of people that quite frankly the world is better off without.

I didn't mean to give the impression that I was fond of Buckley. Far from it. But the one thing I can respect about him is that, unlike the modern right-wing, he was at least his own man. His positions changed over time (his views on race, for instance) and he came out against the Republican party line on a number of issues- he supported handing over the Panama Canal, he thought the Iraq War was a disaster and he called for President Bush to resign. The modern right-wing is so thoroughly dogmatic and so utterly committed to the party line that any sort of independent thinking is practically verboten. That's why I commented that he was better than the current lot.

Let's also remember:
1. he showed a lot more class than the current lot.
2. he argued before the supreme court and got Dr. Sheppard a new trial, while still in law school.
3. he proved that the evidence used to convict Dr. Sheppard had been fabricated. (note no Ohio DAs, Police, Coronors, or the news papers were in any way admonished for the railroading of Sheppard.)

The "Bush has betrayed the True Conservative Movement" argument is actually quite common among people who worship Reagan's Holy Legacy, and it does not count as a credit to him or anyone else who uses it.Vaporous wrote:He also had sense enough to criticize the Bushities for turning his party into a shitbox. He's also the only person outside of sdnet that I've heard point out that Bush would (and should) be replaced under any other democratic model than ours.

Somehow I don't think that being anti-Bush excuses you, in any way shape or form, from making a racist statement like this one concerning segregation:
I'll take Bush over flat-out racists anyday. The central question that emerges…is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas where it does not predominate numerically? The sobering answer is Yes—the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race

Assuming he doesn't hold those views and just keeps his mouth shut on them. Which a lot of the GOP certainly seem to. I'd rather have an honest racist out where I can see him than a closet racist passing laws.TheKwas wrote:I'll take Bush over flat-out racists anyday.
