Oooh, pretty picture!

If I were make a guess, and it's just a guess, that's a large device, several megatons. Though I may be overestimating since the angle is very low and most pictures of large detonations I've seen are from very high up.

It looks like a chain of small islands to me.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

This is a picture of a real mushroom cloud, from a real test. This would be from an H-bomb detonated on one of the pacific islands we thoroughly glassed before we signed that....test ban 'treaty'.

Desktopped too.

I mean, is that a real photograph? Or do nuclear explosions normally turn doomed wastelands into beautiful and artistic paintings?

The test in OP's post was done in the middle of the day but the intense light from the blast makes it look like its night.

I would wager that the camera which took that picture made heavy use of filters.

There are a handful of photos floating around of nuclear tests at this site. They all have the odd quality of light that makes them look fake at first, though not all are as dark as this one.

Good question. I propose more testing to find out. I think Shep should be the one to head this up. He'll be quite enthusiastic, I'm sure.

My first thought was a ludicrous shutter speed, but filters would seem to make more sense now that you mention them. I'm not sure if anyone makes cameras with relativistic shutters...
