Teacher to 4-Year-Olds: 'You Are All Just Stupid Kids'
A Texas Mother Wanted to Know Why Her Well-Behaved Daughter Was Acting Up in School

A Houston mother, who said her daughter was well-behaved at home, was worried about what was going on in her child's classroom because the girl had been suspended four times for bad behavior.

Teacher: 'Y'all Are Just Stupid Kids'

So, Diana Mijares decided to secretly bug her daughter's backpack and was shocked to hear what was on the tape.

"It made us concerned," Mijares said on "Good Morning America" today. "It was enough and we needed answers."

Megan Mijares' digital tape recorded mostly mundane moments at Memorial Elementary School's prekindergarten class, but then it captured the teacher yelling at the group of 4- and 5-year-olds. All of it happened without Megan's or her teacher's knowledge.

"You're just a bad kid," the teacher says on the six-hour tape. "You're mean to me, so I get to be mean to you."

The teacher, who was not identified, continues to harshly scold the children.

"You are all just stupid kids. I swear to God," the teacher says. "You are just all stupid kids."

Mijares said at that point the teacher was responding to a boy who was moving slowly.

"I believe one of the students was taking a little bit longer to come into the classroom," Mijares said.

In response to the allegations, the Houston Independent School District is investigating the case and the school's principal has reassigned the teacher.

Mijares worries that action will not be enough.

"My fear is that if she's reassigned that maybe possibly this could happen to other children," said Mijares, who added she only was trying to protect the children.

"They are learning bad manners and they don't need this," Mijares said.

The teacher has a history of parental complaints. Another mother told ABC News Houston affiliate KTRK that the teacher yelled at her young son and then slapped his face in December.

Houston school officials confirmed a slapping allegation was reported to the principal. After an investigation, the principal found evidence the teacher slapped a student and she was disciplined.

"She was suspended for one day without pay back in December," said district spokesperson Terry Abbott.

Mijares said it's important for parents to pay attention and be involved with their children's schools.

"My advice is if you feel something is really going on and you can't get any answers from the school, try to take charge as much as you can," she said.

Now she and her husband, Oscar, are trying help Megan recover. She said that the girl still is having some problems in school and that they worry the teacher's harsh words may have affected the girl.

One parenting expert said such words could be damaging to young children.

"Four-year-old children see themselves as stupid when you call them stupid. They are going to act up if you call them mean and bad because that is how you see them," said Nancy Samalin. "They are not going to disappoint you."

The teacher's attorney told ABC News the 30-year veteran "wishes to apologize to the students and the students' parents. Her actions that day were an aberration … the result of medication that she was taking as a result of a recent hospital visit."

If a teacher slaps my FOUR-YEAR-OLD-CHILD for any reason, she wouldn't get suspended without pay for one day, I'd suspend her from the grill of my car for about 20 hours of mudding, followed by cutting her loose and backing over her.

In what universe is a teacher allowed to strike a child and keep her job? In California they'll can your ass for LOOKING at a kid crosswise.

Slapping someone elses kids is so far out of line that... well, you can't even see the line even with a telescope. The really crazy thing, though, is that they seem to be treating the fact that she called them stupid kids' more seriously than that! If she actually used the word "y'all," then she has no right to call anyone stupid.

I believe that some kids at certain ages need to be slapped if they do stupid shit (mostly braindead teenagers) but anyone who slaps a fucking four year old should be imprisoned.

It was brought to my attention a while back during a spanking debate that corporal punishment is allowed in many states in the USA; and the department of education has actually released stats on the number of students hit.

I have no opinion on the validity of corporal punishment as a child rearing technique. I will say that I went to elementary and middle school in states where corporal punishment was allowed, and it was a huge fucking joke. It took longer to fill out the paperwork than it did to dispense the beating, and the whole process was restrictive enough that they couldn't cause you real pain. It was /infinitely/ preferable to some of the alternate punishments, like missing recess or staying after school or whatever. To me and everyone I knew, corporal punishment was essentially equivalent to no punishment at all. It was worse than useless as a deterrent, because the whole process could be spun into playground bragging rights.

I know that slapping on the face is probably not considered legal under most corporal punishment regulations, but it would seem to me that it wouldn't be viewed as such a horrible thing in a district where you can paddle kids.

The hell? I'm currently in the process of earning a Teaching certificate and am apalled this woman somehow managed to get into the profession with this behavior which is only the complete opposite of how we're taught to act.

If it was a one off thing maybe I could see it as her just snapping one day but apparently she has a history of this stuff?

According to Merriam-Webster, "whatnot" used as a pronoun dates to 1540. I was an English major for a few years, and even I don't have a problem with it.

If your direct response amounts to nothing but spam, as was the case this time, you should NOT post that reply. I'd probably have kept my mouth shut here if I was alone in my opinion, but that's far from the case. I wasn't aware that it continued to be a problem and I will try to limit my posts even more in the future. I also apologize for making the accusation I did. At the time it seemed like an obvious connection, but you say that's not the case and that's good enough for me. I let my ego and temper get in the way. if any rules were broken I accept full responsibility and any punishments deemed appropriate without argument.

Aside: Meriam Webster seems to disagree with your premise that "y'all" isn't a word in the English language. As does Dictionary.com.
