Alex Billington wrote:How is it, in my many years of childhood, that I happened to miss the glorious 80's sci-fi classic The Last Starfighter? I really do not know. The movie is about an arcade video gamer who is recruited by an alien defense force in order to put his skills to use defending the galaxy from an invasion. This wonderfully brilliant cinematic classic made a whopping $28.7 million at the box office in its 1984 debut. Why this is prime choice for a sequel in 2008, I don't know. Maybe someone who's a big fan of this movie can help with that explanation.

I'm wondering if it'll be something like Xur (Zur?) coming back for vengeance against Earth because of Alex.

I once made the statement that if hollywood did do this, that it would involve Alex's big breasted, tight space suit wearing daughter. Glad they're not trying to sale it with that.

I'd also like to see the star league go after Xur, not just wait for him to attack again. Just to see the SL fleet jump in on the offense would be a good set up for introducing tragedy on the part of our hero.

Ahem.

Unfortunately, the Last Starfighter, last I checked, isn't available on DVD in Australia. So I had to watch the whole thing on fucking Youtube.
Can't import it, or go to "other" resources to get it instead of failtube?

I'm going to hold off judgment until more info is available. We've seen plenty of sequels to wonderful films, the sequels of which we're worth the film they were on.

Note, when I first saw TLS in the theater way back when, it was a double feature with Neverending Story, and look at what the sequel to that was like. Was anyone besides Chuck able to actually watch that idiocy? And if you can believe it, after that abortion of a movie, they actually made a THIRD.

Not me, man. I've been wanting a sequel since I saw it in the theater in 1984. They even say "The Frontier is down - Xur escaped" I will let my inner fangirl take over on this one. Because, goddammit, it's fun to imagine AT THIS MOMENT, and I may want to cry later, but AT THIS MOMENT....this is a great time to be alive.

I've done that sometimes. I'm just tired of the refrain of "yeah - get your own credit card!!!"

(I usually give them the money up front).

I don't know which credit card to get. As a member of the Law Society, we have an arrangement with Amex where we pay no annual fee, and other perks - the only problem with that is the acceptance of Amex around the world is not high. It's better than a comparable Visa I could get from my bank, however.

Personally I'm scared. TLSF is like a cult classic and I'm old enough to have remembered seeing in the theater. I love it but a sequal at this point.....especially something as dubious as direct to dvd.....

Besides which, a son picks up his fathers crusade can work, but I'd be happy with just a remake.

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I must admit to a bit of a giggle at the thought of The Last Starfighter being out of stock.

It isn't out of stock, genius. It was never released there to begin with.
In fact I don't thinkit was released outside region 1 at all.

I don't care if it's got the most stupid script ever or the worst actors in any movie, As long as they don't change the design of the Gunstar overly much, I simply love the look of those ships and they have always been my number one favorite Sci-fi/fantasy spaceships :D .
