Wind Dam

Post by dragon »

Seems like an interesting idea to channel the wind into a turbine like a regular dam would for water. But is the idea pratical and would it generate enough power.

Kite-like Sail Proposed as Wind Power Agent in Eastern Europe
By Jose Fermoso November 28, 2007 | 6:05:32 PMCategories: Environment

Chetwoods Associates, an architectural group from Great Britain, has come up with a new environmental design that promises to capture wind power in an odd but innovative manner: By using a huge replica sail as a model. The first version of this idea will use a giant spinnaker sail placed in a mountain gorge near Russia’s Lake Ladoga area. A spinnaker is a type of sail usually made for boats taking wind from 'a reaching course to a downwind, i.e. with the wind 90°–180° off the bow.'

It's supposed to take in the wind, powerfully generated between a mountainside channel, and then further funnel that energy through an attached turbine. It's safe to assume that there would be power conduit beneath the river to drag in the converted energy for community use, or the whole endeavor would be a sad waste of time and an enormous/sadistic trap for local birds.

The current estimate for the project is about 2.5 millions euros ($3.7 million), but it could save a lot of money in the long term. Currently, wind turbine generators cost between $1500 and $2000 per kilowatt.

Lead architect Laurie Chetwood mentioned that the shape of the sail was chosen in part for its dramatic look and appropriate incorporation into the natural hillside, but mostly because the architecture of the cup-shaped sail will be more efficient at turning the power of the wind into substantial energy savings.

According to the firm’s current proposal, the wind dam will be about 82 ft. high and 246 ft. wide. The group is so sure that the wind device will be successful that they are already preparing more proposals for similarly hilly terrains in Eastern Europe.

Sounds great, especially for areas that have tons of wind, such as the Columbia River Gorge! :D

Having one of those things atop a real dam and lining the sail with solar-cell paint would be awesome. Like a super-saver eco-energy combo-pack! Call right now and it'll be absolutely free, but wait, there's more!

These things look pretty awesome as far as engineering goes, but their practical merits could be questionable. You'd need strong and more or less constant winds, I think only a few gorges can boast that, no? :?
