Dawn of War: Soulstorm
Has anyone else bought this yet?
I picked up my copy today. So far I haven't played either of the new races, i'm doing a Tau campaign first.

I'm not sure if I'll bother with this. I've supported the series from the beginning, and I'm bummed that Iron Lore's closing up shop, but what little value I see left in DoW is in the form of the DoWH40K mod, and I don't know if they're doing Soulstorm or not.
The game's been completely eclipsed by CoH, and there are rumors abound of a DoW2, which can only be assumed to use the infinitely-superior CoH engine.

Anyone else think that the World in Conflict engine could work well for a WH40K game? (Yes, I know, probably wouldn't ever happen, but still.)

Now that you mention it, yeah, that would pretty sweet. It would give a scale more analogous to the tabletop Epic or Apocalypse rulesets. Of course, the gameplay mechanics wouldn't (and shouldn't) necessarily be an adaptation of WiC's, but all in all, yeah, there's a lot of potential there.Uraniun235 wrote:Anyone else think that the World in Conflict engine could work well for a WH40K game? Amazon is apparently out of stock even though I pre-ordered it. Just a warning for people going that route. I mainly play the Close to Codex type mods and getting Soulstorm so when they do mod the new units and stuff can keep up to date.

How is the Campaign? The Campaign for Dark Crusade is what really made that game for me, and I know I would not have played it a tenth as much as I did had it not been for that superbly replayable campaign game.

Allow me to beat the dead horse a bit:
"Three expansions and no Tyranids make Jack a dull boy"
On the other hand, the Sisters is something I might be looking forward to. I second the previous post. How is the multi-planet campaign mode? If it improves upon Dark Crusade's model, then it must be sweet.
As for using the WiC engine for Wh40K.... Damm you! It ain't like I already have enough mod ideas I'll never make.... And now you make me think of that?! Although I'm not sure the WiC engine can render spectacular melee battles as DoW does, wich, all in all, is more in line with the feel of Wh40K.

The focus would be on the titanic, or (dare I say it) apocalyptic destruction of Apocalypse or Epic style battles, not the close-in skirmishes of vanilla tabletop. So instead of lots of chainswords and hacky-hacky slash-stab, you'd be blowing each other up with Earthshaker batteries, Shadowsword superheavy battletanks, Warlord Titans, orbital bombardment, Hierophant bio-titans, Gorgon assault transports... and, of course, a Big Mek's Stompa or two with which to Waaagh! up the battlefield with the Gaze of Mork.LordOskuro wrote:As for using the WiC engine for Wh40K.... You might think it's not as "40K-ish" without chainswords and lots of juicy close-combat, but there's more to 40K than just the classic bolt pistol and chainsword imagery. If anything, the "massive firepower" theme and focus outlined above is more 40K-ish than the classic theme - we just don't see it as often in the various media for obvious reasons.

I don't think it is too bad. I do like having aircraft, but it makes the battles against the computer a little too easy. You don't have to challenge of trying to push through the massed hordes of the enemy anymore. Now you just build you aircraft and fly over to their base and destroy it. Plus each faction only gets 1 kind of aircraft. I would have preferred a variety for aircraft. But overall, the game is not too bad.

I know, I know, I'm just too fond of the Boyz.... still drooling after reading the rules for a 100+ Ork Squad in Apocalypse.Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:You might think it's not as "40K-ish" without chainswords and lots of juicy close-combat, but there's more to 40K than just the classic bolt pistol and chainsword imagery.
Then again, Titans, Imperial Navy, Guard Tanks.... yes, definitely WiC material.

Plus you can only get a maximum of 5 aircraft.

I put the speculation into the Wikipedia Article of the Blood Ravens last night, I only played two rounds before I went to bed, so the speculation was brief(located under the section that addresses the BR's originator chapter).Dartzap wrote:

Suffice to say, The odds are that, if the some of the purchaseble wargear are Chapter heirlooms stretching to the founding, then Rogal Dorn is the Primarch.

Not tried the campaign yet, just getting a feel for the new guys.
The Sisters thus far seem to be the bastard offspring of the IG and the Smurfs, which seems logical, I guess. The Sisters themselves are decent enough, but can only damage vehicles by throwing themselves into the tracks. Speaking of which, the Sisters Repentia are hilarious to watch in action, especially when shoulder-barging Orks into the distance. Still suck against vehicles though. I find that packing a pair of multi-melta'd Immolators and a melta'd up squad of Celestians works to deal with most vehicular embuggerations. For everything else, there's fire.
Rather limited in vehicles, no tanks as you'd recognise them and I'm still undecided about the Exorcist. While always nice to have, jittery blindfolded Guardsmen under the influence of alcohol and another intoxicant of your choice would be able to aim better than the Pipe-Organ of Doom.
The Penitent Engine makes up for it, by being a Dreadnought on steroids. They're scarily fast and eat anything that gets close. if they're not close, they will be. Shame you can only have two, I'd happily just use them.
In conclusion: Tanks bad, necromancy good.
As for the Dark Eldar, I'm not sure. Not played them much. Like normal Eldar with with eye-hurting black death-rays and wonderfully hammy voice acting from the Haemonculus. Fast, very fast, and I do have a soft spot for the Dias of Destruction. Screw walking, take a mobile death-throne.

I dunno though, you can zoom in pretty close with WIC, so I think there'd be room for a system whereby you could have different-sized battles; certain maps could either be set for smaller groups and focused more tightly, or maybe it'd be a server setting where a map will adjust the objectives to fit the scale set by the server. So you could have anywhere from a couple of squads duking it out to a whole battery of artillery cutting loose against the Green Horde.

After all, the single most iconic piece of imagery in all of 40k is a Space Marine, legs braced, firing his boltgun at unseen enemies.Uraniun235 wrote: Honestly, I vastly prefer the "big guns" aspects of 40K rather than the hack 'n slash.
