Re: C-21 Boomerang - NR Heavy Assaultfighter (original Desig
Once again I find myself polluting threads containing your fine work with my crappy drawings, but this time ones I did 5 years ago.
The first one was a NR fighter for Space/Air Superiority, it had a removable Magazine for it's limited Torp storage and O-ring style wing to aid in heat disipation without taking up too much room, the rear Lasers/blasters are operated by the R8 Astromech if neccesary. This is sort of my version of an A-wing but with better Atmospheric and prolonged patrol characteristics.
The O-Wing.
------
Then there was the heavy Bomber, and I do mean heavy. It had a stripped down Light/Medium Turbolaser in each wing (with massive grills to provide cooling and wing root reloading doors that would accomodate a man.) The dotted lines show the Weapons dimensions inside the wing, continuing under the Engines. The shaded area is the Cockpit (3 man crew; Pilot, Weapons tech, EW officer) and the R8 Astro mech goes at the rear. The dotted line behind that shows the Bomb bay for the Heavy Concussion Missiles and the weapon in the nose is an Ion Cannon. Basically this is a slow ship that is designed to scare the shit out of Escorts and light Frigates. It needs a serious escort party but 2 bombers is better than having to commit your own Frigates and Escorts to meet the enemy ones.
The C-wing.
Hope you lot can forgive the poor drawing skills. Any modellers that want to take pity on an Artistically challenged person can feel free to use the designs if they wish, just a little credit (or blame depending on your point of view ) will make me happy. The rest of you may now point and laugh.

I like the idea behind the O-wing, a saucer shaped craft would be incredibly manueverable if it were designed right.
By saucer shaped I don't mean saucer with an awkward body plus a neck and two goofy nacelles.

The C-wing sucks and blows, but the O-wing has definite potential. I may be wrong here but it reminds me kinda of the layout of the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter. Any chance of a clearer layout drawing, it's tough making models from roughs.

Well it was drawn 5 years ago and so I would have been watching B5, funnily enough I only realy thought of the Centauri Cruisers (just the horizontal wing part, the rest all disgarded) when I scanned in the pic yesterday. I'd be amazed if there weren't more Crescent-winged fighters/ships in Sci-fi, to me it just looks right as a design start point. His Divine Shadow wrote:C-wing kinda looks like a Centauri fighter...

Well it isn't actully saucer-shaped, It's a fighter cockpit, with a Sensor bay in front, a small addition to the rear for the astromech and the rear protection guns, a Wide Ring around it's rear 3/4, and engines and guns mounted to the Ring.Darth Fanboy wrote:I like the idea behind the O-wing, a saucer shaped craft would be incredibly manueverable if it were designed right.

You're thinking of the V-wing Airspeeder from the Mon Cal section of the game, and this was designed at least 2 years before then, there is a similarity in shape, but the C-wing is much bigger, slower and more powerful, plus it doesn't have canted wings either.Yomin Carr wrote:wasnt there a c-wing in the game rogue squadron 1

Thank you, I tries my bestest.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:The C-wing sucks and blows,
Now that's frightening, because i used to watch tht film alot when i was younger. However I've just had a look on the net this is the best pic I could find of the Gunstar and there are differences (thank fuck), the Gunstar is much bigger, has a more pronounced nose, four wings and no O-wing or rear guns. It is, however, obvious that it must have influenced me subconsciously. Damn I knew it was too good a design to be something original.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:but the O-wing has definite potential. That's the best I could do then, and I'm worse now. I'll try but I'm sure it won't be much better and will take me ages to do (have I mentioned I can't draw?)Kenny_10_Bellys wrote: Any chance of a clearer layout drawing, it's tough making models from roughs.

Yeah, the Ol Gunstar shines through I think, but then again I don't think there's been a really original design since the Blakes 7 Liberator. No matter how hard we try, there's always a little touch of something else in there, and a fanboy to spot it.
Give the sketch a quick try, nothing too fancy. A plain side and top view would be a great help, I have a partially complete model that I can maybe cannabalise to make something of this, but then again my model looks a bit like the Gunstar raped a Starfury.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more i'm sure the C-wing is influenced by the Centauri on B5.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:Yeah, the Ol Gunstar shines through I think, but then again I don't think there's been a really original design since the Blakes 7 Liberator. This is the absolute best i can do, after 2 hours of swearing and rubbing out (then i realised that after trying to keep all the components inline I forgot to centre the front view of the main body with the front view of the Ring and it's additions )Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:Give the sketch a quick try, nothing too fancy. Anyway, I changed a few things, moved the rear guns to the sides, added rear landing gear bays and finally turned the Torpedo mags around so they fired from either side of their Hotshoes. Also the R8's dome isn't to scle, th whole fighter should be 7-9m in length tops.
It's 177kb, the o-wing in its component pieces.

Much clearer, thanks. If I get an hour tonight I'll slap a basic shape together and see what changes you want to make. There might be some artistic license involved to try and make it look slightly cooler than the lovely drawing, it that's ok?

Don't worry too much about me, one of the reasons I started posting here was because there's a lack of constructive criticism on another forum, or rather one or two numbnutts who drive others away with their comments, particularly newbies at 3D. I always go out of my way to help if I can. Famous for it. I'll take it on board though and be more careful in future.

Well I know my artwork is crap, and by posting it I was tacitly asking people to comment on it (of course something more constructive, like why it sucks would be nice) so I'm fine with it.Enlightenment wrote:<taps foot> A little more tact would be appriciated.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:The C-wing sucks and blows,

I cant put my finger on it, I just know that to me it sucks. Sorry. But hey, sing hosannahs, I like the O wing a lot, although it remains to be seen if you like my treatment of it. It's not the artwork that bugs me by the way, I can't draw any better than you. As I say, I just can't put a finger on it. For a laugh though, you can tear strips off my model of the O-Wing when i post a WIP here in a while. That should even the balance

Its just that there are so few people here posting original stuff and I'd like to keep the environment reasonably friendly (by SD.net standards at least) so as not to scare off any SD newbies or beginners. Bunnies in light is way too much but 'frankly I don't like that.' or 'I don't like that because _______' is a lot nicer than 'that sucks.'

I doubt I would unless you made a complete dogs dinner of it, I'd just be happy to have a look at what's done. Having had a look at the meshes on your site i'm reasonably confident you'll do a good job. And if not, I can always break the old L-96 out of storage.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:I cant put my finger on it, I just know that to me it sucks. Sorry.
