I have to wonder if she's played KOTOR II, because events as I understand them are proceeding in a roughly similar way to the game, concerning Mandalorians. In that a Jedi ends up mingling with Mandalorians, who will eventually aid in the destruction of a big ol' capship and the whole warrior culture thing.
Of course, the differences are that KOTOR II's Mandalorians aren't oh-so-freaking-perfect, and they respect the Jedi who kicked their asses in the war.
As I recall, the Exile can fight some Mandalorian champions bare-fisted and win. None of this "omg my lightsaber is useless thus so am I" shit.
Back to the present, it seems almost as if KT saw KOTOR II and thought "Hmm.. these guys need to be wanked out more."

Wow. What a clusterfuck of epic proportions. Reading YodaKenobi's review, I can definitely see it getting cited with the other really bad SW fiction of the EU - but I really, truly, cannot understand how any editor could read this drek and never once raise a peep of objection. They really just don't care, it seems.

Still what warms my heart is Traviss will never, ever be able to contradict RoTJ. Oh she may try, but to the SW public, Boba Fett died by getting one upped by a blind man wildly flailing his stick.

Traviss's shit is so bad that it retroactively ruins the rest of the EU for me. I've always thought that the EU had a lot of crap, but I liked the basic concept of it. I argued against the Trektards who attempted to dismiss its canon status. I cared about the quality of the EU, and wanted more good stuff to be produced. I worked on Wookieepedia, hoping to expose other fans to some of the cooler, smarter, and more consistent things in the EU while battling the tide of minimalist bullshit. The Clone Wars cartoon and Saxton's ICS were a great lead-in to ROTS, and it was around then that my interest in SW peaked.
But now? I don't even want to read more EU, even the stuff before Traviss. That's because I know that it's all leading to her work. I know that the Mandalorians will be obnoxiously portrayed as being perfectly honorable and moral. I know that the Jedi, who are at the true core of SW, will be canonically made out to be a bunch of pussies, retards, and elitist assholes.
I now truly understand the idea of "personal canon." I still love the movies, the Clone Wars series, some of the computer games, and some of the books. I'll be looking forward to the upcoming CGI movie and TV series. But the rest of the EU? Fuck it, I'm done.

"They're not triangular, but they are more or less blade-shaped"- Thrawn McEwok on the shape of Bakura destroyers
"Lovely. It's known as impugning character regarding statement of professional qualifications' in the legal world"- Karen Traviss, crying libel because I said that no soldier she interviewed would claim that he can take on billion-to-one odds
"I've already laid out rules for this thread that we're not going to make these evidential demands"- Dark Moose on supporting your claims

I have another solution (i.e. personal canon). And I found I can actually have quite some fun with it.Jim Raynor wrote:Traviss's shit is so bad that it retroactively ruins the rest of the EU for me. Treat everything from Dark Nest onwards as in-universe fiction.
They made a holofilm in the GFFA about Boba Fett, which... embellished his history slightly. However, it starred a REALLY HAWT actor, and millions of teenage girls began writing fanfiction about Fett.
On her first day of college, Cair Entravis got intrigued with a crazy man who claimed to be a Mandalorian, and blamed the Jedi for his inability to hold a steady job. She managed to start a Mandalorian club, whose members used a special language they created to communicate with each other. Since none of them were linguistics majors, the "language" they created was nothing more than a code for Basic, with a few haphazard ideas thrown in because someone though it would be "kewl".
Eventually, Cair Entravis dropped out of college after her history professor gave her a failing grade for a paper that claimed there were 3,000,000 clones in the Clone Wars, and how it was a brushfire conflict that was barely noticed, that the Clones were Mandalorians, and that the Jedi conspired with Palpatine. She got mad, dusted off her teenage Fett fanfic, spinkled in anti-Jedi sentiment and the Mando'a "language", and submitted it for publication. They published it in order to gear interest in the sequel to the first Fett movie, which ended with him falling into the Sarlacc. By this time, the filmmakers decided that any adherence to historical truth interferes with profit, and decided to bring Fett back.
"He died there. Or if he didn't, he never showed up again. If the filmmakers knew anything about smugglers and bounty hunters, they'd realize how pointless a blood feud like the one they portray between Fett and my Dad is in those circles. No, my brother is not a Sith Lord, and if wanted to take him down, I wouldn't need Mandalorian training. Galactic Pictures and Ms. Entravis could use a little less melodrama and more historical research." -- Jedi Master Jaina Solo, when asked to comment on the new publications.
Jesse Helms died on the 4th of July and the nation celebrated with fireworks, BBQs and a day off for everyone. -- Ed Brayton, Dispatches from the Culture Wars
"And a force-sensitive mandalorian female Bountyhunter, who is also the granddaughter of Darth Vader is as cool as it can get. Almost absolute zero." -- FTeik

I'd like to subscribe to this theory. Still, my solution is just a simple reboot. Every franchise does it, it is our time.General Soontir Fel wrote:I have another solution (i.e. personal canon). And I found I can actually have quite some fun with it.

Just throw everything out. Start fresh with just the movies, now that we have their complete story, and anything Lucas actually has a hand in, The Clone Wars, SWTV whatever.
No one has to have hurt feelings or anything, and it doesn't demean what previous authors have done, but it gives a new opportunity to a new group of creators.

*points and laughs*
All the warsies back 10 years ago who snickered and laughed as Star Trek slowly died and became so horrible, before smirking and pointing to their vaunted Star Wars EU as a way of doing things RIGHT, with tight controls over content, continuity, quality and all that good shit.
I laugh in your general direction!
That said, this is just pathetic. After reading the YodaKenobi review, I just felt ill. Yes, I actually felt gas building up in my stomach as I see one of my most treasured sci-fi franchises being destroyed before my eyes. Again.
How in the FUCKING HELL this BULLSHIT got past ANYONE who proofread it...
I mean Jesus CHRIST!

I expect her to enact revenge on Han Solo in a most embarrassing fashion. Though, like I said, a remedy is easy enough. We just need Publius to submit his work, become an author, and convince him to write a SW book featuring someone kicking the shit out of Mandalore, Boba Fett, and his ilk.Ghost Rider wrote:Still what warms my heart is Traviss will never, ever be able to contradict RoTJ. I'm thinking a Gungun invasion of the planet being most appropriate.

True, but... *points to OVEG and OEEG* I daresay SW is still coming out ahead. WE've only got one person trying to fuck up SW badly. You had like tons and they were at it for years on a weekly basisChris OFarrell wrote:*points and laughs*

I don't know.. Voyager and Enterprise were cack but what Traviss is doing is the equivalent of making Kirk into a royal dumbass, have him acknowledge that yes, he and his entire crew are royal dumbasses and then have his ass kicked by Klingons, who have become the wonderful, super, heroic, übermensch of the galaxy.Connor MacLeod wrote:True, but... *points to OVEG and OEEG* I daresay SW is still coming out ahead. So what? As annoying as the shit Traviss does, she's hardly the all-encompassing evil some people make her out to be. She's an annoyance, but she's a minor irritant at worst. She's not really in a position to make any sweeping, destructive changes to SW - she can hardly overwrite every other author in the SW universe just because of her pet fetishes. B&B were in much more of a position to fuck over Star Trek, and they succesfully managed to do it for years.
The same is true of alot of the remnant trektards like Scooter or the clowns at SFJ - they talk big and try to make themselves out to be more important than they are, but in the end they're a fringe nuisance at worst, and best forgotten or ignored, rather than exaggerated to some epic menace (which is what they want to be, anyhow.)
The same can be said of people like Sarli.

Really, Traviss has only written, what, like 5 or 6 books, yes? Her ridiculous stories can easily be ignored by later authors, just like she ignores the movies.

Fett wank is fine. It's the every Mandalorian is Fett, lets wank them all mentality that kills me.Darth Onasi wrote:I guess it just feels worse because it's happening right now.
That, and I never could stand Fett wank.

Fett was always a "badass" because he was Fett, not because he was a Mandalorian. K.W. Jeter's Bounty Hunter Trilogy had plenty of "fett wank" that was over the top and badass, yet it wasn't nearly as grating as this. Its quite enjoyable IMHO.
But it becomes a problem when you spin Fett's badassery into being some fundamental core concept of being Mandalorian, which is basically what TRaviss does with her "its all kultural" nonsense.
