Obama rejects being Clinton's No. 2

Story Highlights
NEW: Sen. Barack Obama says he's running for the top job, not vice president

Mississippi holds primary Tuesday; 33 delegates are at stake

Obama leads Clinton in Mississippi by double digits, polls suggest

Senator suggests Florida Democrats hold a new election using mail-in ballots

(CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama Monday flatly rejected suggestions he would be a vice presidential running mate for Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, and her husband, former President Clinton, have suggested a joint Clinton-Obama ticket -- with Obama in the second slot.

President Clinton Saturday suggested a Clinton-Obama ticket would be "unstoppable."

"He would win the urban areas and the upscale voters. She would win the rural areas that we lost when President Reagan was president," he said while campaigning in Pass Christian, Mississippi. "If you put those two things together, you'd have an almost unstoppable force."

Obama forcefully shot that idea down.

"Sen. Clinton is fighting hard. She's tenacious. I respect her for that. She is working hard to win the nomination. But I want everybody to be absolutely clear. I'm not running for vice president. I'm running for president of the United States of America," Obama told supporters during a rally in Columbus, Mississippi.

If anyone should be suggesting vice presidential candidates, it should be him, Obama said.

"With all due respect. I won twice as many states as Sen. Clinton. I've won more of the popular vote than Sen. Clinton. I have more delegates than Sen. Clinton. So, I don't know how somebody who's in second place is offering vice presidency to the person who's in first place," he said. Watch Obama spike a Clinton-Obama ticket »

Obama also said the Clinton campaign was "hoodwinking" voters when it suggested he was not ready to be president while also floating the possibility of a joint Clinton-Obama ticket.

"I don't understand," he said. "If I'm not ready, how is it that you think I should be such a great vice president?"

Obama was campaigning in Mississippi a day before the state holds its primary Tuesday, while Clinton keeps her eye on the next big prize on the Democratic calendar, Pennsylvania.

Thirty-three delegates are at stake Tuesday, and in the tight Democratic race, every delegate is critical. CNN estimates Obama leads Clinton 1,553 to 1,438. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to win the nomination.

Obama won the Wyoming caucuses Saturday, where he picked up seven delegates. Clinton won five delegates.

Obama was also scheduled to hold a rally in Jackson, Mississippi, Monday, while Clinton was set to hold campaign events in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania holds its primary April 22.

The divergent paths on their campaign trails may be a reflection of what the campaigns view as their political strengths.

Obama has done well in Southern states that have large African-American populations. Clinton has done better in industrial states with large groups of blue-collar voters such as Ohio, which she won last week. Watch why black voters are flocking to the polls »

Going into Tuesday's voting, Obama has a double-digit lead over Clinton in Mississippi, polls suggested. An American Research Group poll conducted March 5-6 of likely primary voters had Obama leading Clinton 58 percent to 34 percent with 5 percent supporting another candidate and 3 percent unsure. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. Watch an Obama aide explain why Obama will not be a VP candidate »

As the race has remained in a virtual deadlock, pressure has been mounting on party officials to find a solution that lets Michigan and Florida have some input in the nomination process.

Both states were stripped of their delegates by the national Democratic Party after they violated party rules and moved their primaries to January. Clinton won both contests.

None of the top-tier candidates campaigned in either state before the votes, and Obama was not on the ballot in Michigan.

How the question is resolved could have a significant impact on the Democratic race. Florida has 210 delegates, while Michigan has 156 delegates.

Ann Lewis, a senior Clinton adviser, argued the outcome of Florida's January primary should be used to allocate Florida's delegates. Watch Lewis explain why the Florida results should count

"Here's what we think the criteria should be: Recognize and respect the fact so many Florida Democrats did come out," Lewis said. "Let's remember and recognize the people who did show up and appreciate that they thought votes should be counted."

But comments by Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, suggested party leaders would not support that position.

"I think it's very unlikely that Florida and Michigan, given how close this race is, are going to be seated as is," Dean told CBS Sunday. "But everybody's going to work very hard to find a compromise within the rules that's fair to both campaigns that will allow Florida and Michigan in the end to be seated."

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, has proposed Florida Democrats get a chance to vote again using mail-in ballot, saying a full primary using regular voting machines would be prohibitively expensive.

Nelson estimated the cost of conducting an election using mail-in ballots would be about $6 million. Florida's Democratic Party would raise the money to pay for the mail-in election, he said.

Two prominent Democratic fundraisers -- Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania and Gov. John Corzine of New Jersey -- suggested they would be willing to help raise the funds necessary to hold new elections in Florida and Michigan.

A letter outlining their proposal was published Sunday in the Washington Post. Rendell and Corzine said they would help raise half of the $30 million they estimated it would take to hold primaries in Florida and Michigan.

Both Rendell and Corzine back Clinton, but former Sen. Tom Daschle, Obama's campaign co-chairman, said the Obama campaign would be open to the two campaigns raising funds for new primaries.
I know exactly why he did this, too. Last week Clinton was hemming and hawing around the idea, with a wink and a nod that Obama would end up on the ticket no matter what. It was a cheap ploy to try and steal his support by saying supporting her would be the same as supporting him.

Clearly, he's not taking a back seat to anyone.

I heard his speech on cnn.com and he came across well. I think anyone who thinks hildabeast would accept obama as a VP or anyone who thinks obama would take it haven't been paying attention at all. She's a vindictive, cruel individual, and I don't think anyone's buying her crocodile tears.

The funny thing is that those fake-ass tears were the straw that broke my back (specifically, New Hampshire) - turned me from a Clinton Supporter to an Obama supporter. And looking back, it was the right time to do so - look at the acid-spitting cunt now; doing all she can to keep her claws in the race. Fuck her.

How much you want to bet that the Clinton spin machine will take this and attempt to turn it into "Obama can't swallow his pride! Do you really want to vote for someone that full of themselves?"

...despite the glaring hypocrisy in that the Hildebeast has been doing the same and much worse the whole campaign. Hey, it hasn't stopped them so far.

Well, apparently the Obama VP thing isn't going to happen anyway. See, Cunton's chief spokesman says Obama isn't even qualified to be the VP!
Clinton aide: Obama unqualified for VP

by Mike Dorning

After several days of Bill and Hillary Clinton floating the idea of a joint ticket with rival Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton chief spokesman Howard Wolfson declared Monday that Clinton does not consider Obama qualified to be vice president.

Still, Wolfson said Clinton would not “rule out” Obama as a potential vice president, in the event the Illinois senator is somehow able to prove he meets the test to be commander-in-chief in the five months between now and the August Democratic National Convention.

The Clinton campaign had been pressing the idea of a Clinton-Obama “dream ticket” as a way to win over Democrats torn between the two candidates at the same time it has been aggressively questioning Obama’s readiness to be commander-in-chief. That has led to questions seeking to resolve an apparent inconsistency in the possibility someone would be considered suitable to stand a heartbeat away from the presidency and yet be unprepared for the post.

Clinton Communications Director Wolfson was pressed on the point during a press conference call a few moments ago in which military advisers to the Clinton campaign again questioned Obama’s readiness to be commander-in-chief.

(Photo of Howard Wolfson provided to AP by CBS News' Face the Nation.)

Wolfson reaffirmed Clinton’s position that Obama has not demonstrated his suitability to guide the nation in an international crisis.

“We do not believe at this point that Sen. Obama has passed that key commander in chief test,” Wolfson said. Later, Wolfson added that what Clinton views as Obama's failure to pass that test would disqualify him as a vice presidential pick, since a vice president must be prepared to step into the presidency at a moment’s notice.

“Sen. Clinton will not choose any candidate who has not at the time of choosing passed the national security threshold, period,” Wolfson said.

But in an unusual logical twist, Wolfson said Clinton considered it possible that Obama might be able to demonstrate his readiness for commander-in-chief between now and August, when the Democratic National Convention meets in Denver and the party’s nominee must choose a running mate.

“We have a long way to go between now and Denver. And it’s not something she’s prepared to rule out at this point. But certainly anyone who is chosen as a vice presidential candidate needs to be prepared to be commander-in-chief,” Wolfson said.

Translation: He's not qualified now, but if Clinton gets into a position where she can secure the nomination by getting Obama to agree to be her running mate, he'll be qualified then.

Just when you think the Cunton campaign can't get any more laughably surreal.

This reminds me of (football comparison coming) the situation in Cleveland with the Browns. Brady Quinn, while already relegated to the role of back up next year, behind started Derick Anderson, made comments about he can't wait to get into camp so he can compete for the starting job. Most of the sports media jumped all over him, basically calling him an idiot. The smart few, however, made the simple comment... "Do you want a QB on your team that doesn't WANT to be the starter and THINK that he can lead your team?" and different variations.

While not quite the same, as Obama looks to be next years starter, I want a candidate that WANTS to be President. I want him to EXPECT to win, I want him to KNOW he is the best person for the job, because really, the LAST thing I want in a President is someone without confidence in himself.

Just make sure he has a brain though, or else we end up with Dubya.

The most ridiculous part of all this is that she's acting as though she's the front-runner graciously offering the VP slot to the runner-up. News flash: YOU'RE LOSING HILLARY! YOU'RE GOING TO LOSE!

Does she really think Obama supporters are going to go running to her because she says she MIGHT offer him the second spot, when Obama is BEATING her?? Her desperation is incredible.

You know, if this was all an Illuminati conspiracy to make people favor Obama then Clinton is doing her job admirably.

Of course the truth is she's just a moron. Who wants a moron to be President?

Heh, I was waiting al lday to get hom from work to post this.. Figured someone else would get to it.

Others have said this before, but the point needs to be driven him... Hillary is LOOSING! she is LOOSING she is BEHIND Obama and, after Ohio and Texas, she is acting as if Obama should kneel down and kiss her hand in Thanks for her "letting" him be her VP...

I belive Obama said it best:
"With all due respect. I won twice as many states as Sen. Clinton. I've won more of the popular vote than Sen. Clinton. I have more delegates than Sen. Clinton. So, I don't know how somebody who's in second place is offering vice presidency to the person who's in first place," he said. Watch Obama spike a Clinton-Obama ticket »

It is the sort of "dirty" trick which stinks of desperation. Rather like much of Hillary's post-February 5th (we can hardly call it) "strategy".

Either that or she's delusional/disinformed at this point. Because she's in no position to offer Obama anything.
