This, of course, is the final update before the U.S. launch. There will still be some updates after the game has been released.
Later...

Dojo updates go until the end of the month, I think.

anyone else having read disc problems with their copies of Brawl?

I was at the Midnight release last night, got home, my copy gives a read disc error. Had to go return that copy, and go elsewhere to buy another (after getting my refund from GS of course), and I'm getting the same fucking error.

No. I needed to perform a system update to play it, but no such issues with the disc.

This game is awesome.

I've never played a Smash Bros. game until today, and at first it was clunky as hell and I was all "oh shit, what the fuck am I doing?" but after checking the manual and playing a few more rounds, I got the hang of it.

Brawl is the first dual-layer Wii disc. Thus, defective drives that just barely read most other games give errors on Brawl. Nintendo'll fix it for you, but you might have to wait a bit :(

Also, dust in the drive can do it. IIRC Nintendo's offering free cleanings if you suffer this error.

We should all go and check out our friend codes and make sure we're actually friended with each other. That way we could actually set up games via the wireless, which would be fun. I went to use the wireless connection and I didn't find anyone. C'mon, no smash at 4:00? I just unlocked Snaaaaake and I want to mine some people's faces.

Hopefully it won't take long for my console to come back, so when i get home, I can crack into some Brawl...

Some thoughts (mostly 4 player free-for-all on 3 stock and default items and settings):

Snake is hardcore. Takes some serious skill to play him well, and a large map really helps. Definitely plays very differently to everyone else. Fucking AWESOME final smash.

Sonic is fucking cheese. All of your B moves are spins of various types, which you can spam with veritable impunity, and to top it all off it's ridiculously easy for Sonic to get a final smash, and when he does it's easily the most ridiculous (in a bad way) in the game.

Ike, I think, is my main dude, despite my general opposition to anime-hair. I like sword dudes, and they usually seem to have good up-A and forward-A attacks. I've pulled off some wicked counters, with double insta-KOs.

I'll finally get my chance to play tomorrow. I'll go with Meta Knight mostly but I might take a look at Pitt, Sonic, Ike, Yoshi, and Link. I would have played during lunch but there were to many people.

You can charge Sonic's B's old-sega style--rapidly press B while holding the direction.

Also, Pikachu has the same sort of final smash.

Tapping seems to have replaced holding for most of the B moves. Pit, for instance, had a short duration for his Angel Circle unless you keep tapping B.

Coincidentally, I'm very proud of Pit. I was somewhat concerned that he'd be too light a character, in both the Offense and Defense departments, but overall he stays in very well. I love his Down Smash, and of course his aerials are all great. The Back air, in particular, is quite powerful. Probably my favorite of the new characters.

Close second to Lucario though. I'm glad my fears about his clone-status were so misguided. His down A in the air is really good for chaining up hits, plus the Aura boost from damage makes it quite potent.

Some comments-

As good as Metaknight looks, it was very telling that I got Luigi on my third attempt- by switching back to Link. He's gonna need some work.

I had no issues getting my copy at 11:30 yesterday. Walked in, showed my license to prove I was me, and walked out.

As always, half the fun of this game is the crazy ways you die. My brother has a vendetta with the Balloon Fight fish on "The Summit" already.

SSE can be extremely frustrating. Every time I get killed by an enemy that would be bleedingly obvious from the character's perspective that I can't see, I cry on the inside.

EDIT: Also, the hype machine is already revving up: GameStop essentially asked me to preorder Mario Kart while I was there.

Yes, but Pikachu's is much harder to control, and powers down over the duration of its effect. Super Sonic is much much meaner.

Addendum: Speaking of strange deaths and vendettas vendettas, Bomb-ombs. Them against me. Fortunately, their killing power seems to have lessened slightly. I still notice them popping up just above or behind my character every so often.

Playing the game for a couple of days, I've found that I'm particularly good with Peach so far. :)

Almost 40% through SSE and Jesus, is it starting to become a chore. A frustrating, unforgiving chore. I hear it gets pretty much unbearable in the final percentages.

But hey, I unlocked Falco tonight. :D

I took down the Subspace Emissary in a single sitting. A single, 8-hour sitting granted, but it can be done. I went through on normal first, however, for the sake of brevity. I found the only really chore-like part comes at the very end, for the final level. I won't spoil it with details if you haven't already looked them up, but overall I felt like it wasn't bad. The only part that really gave me grief was the final boss. I hate that cluck so very much.

In SSE, Donkey Kong is a Boss-Slayer. Every time I have a problem with one, I bring him out and watch that life meter shrink.

Okay I finally played it and it was awesome but, man can my friends complain. I play as Meta Knight, their response "oh Meta Knight is to cheap we're banning him. Someone else plays as Pit Oh his "B" move is to cheap we're banning that move. Someone else plays as Sonic Oh is his final smash is to cheap, well you got the idea already. No matter what I did someone was just bitching, if you lost you lost stop making excuses.

This the one that got to me though Only noobs play as the same character over and over again. Wait what, are fucking serious. I decided that I would play as Meta Knight since the fucking trailer came out.

Despite all of that I had fun I preferred playing with the wiimote and nun-chuck rather that the gamecube controller though I probably should have done the wiimote by itself.

I played as Meta Knight, his combos were awesome. Yoshi was able to get the smash ball easily with no effort at all. Ike was strong but, slow. Sonic was hard to control, though I was able to win with him once but that's because I stood in a corner and then owned everyone with the final smash.

All in all it’s a great game.

And oh my god I have never heard the phrase "Quit being gay" or "You're such a fag" so many times in one day. And it kind of got weird considering that one of the guys we were playing with was gay.
