Andrew Sullivan wrote:—which, as far as I'm concerned, is an anti-intellectual stance if there ever was one.
Is this the same Andrew Sullivan who told Sam Harris during a debate with him on the Beliefnet website that no amount of evidence would ever get him to budge on his Christian beliefs because the emotional experiences he's gone through has convinced him of the religion's absolute truth?

That's not to excuse Ms. Jacoby; it's just humorous who's accusing her of a clear-cut case of anti-intellectualism.

Or do I misunderstand that label?

Probably. He's gay, but also staunchly Catholic. He coined the terms "Christianist" to refer to Domionionists, who he's against; he's a South Park Republican.

That really jumped out at me too. Text messaging instead of reading books making people MORE literate? The writer doesn't even TRY to support this claim.
Yes, he does. The place where he says that is a link, to this article. The MSNBC page that links to is unfortunately a dead link, but he does attempt to support that claim. The problem is that the claim that it makes them more comfortable 'expressing themselves using written means' is not the same as claiming it makes them more literate. They clearly aren't.

No, there are drunkards and soccer hooligans, but they don't comprise the entire country, though they do make up far too bloody much of it.

There's nothing wrong with a social drink, though I've never understood the people who say crap like "I'm going out to get pissed". So, you want to boast about ending up puking in the street? That's some achievement.

And as for those who treat soccer as a religion, as someone with no interest in sport at all, I'm afraid I just don't understand it.

And to Lord Poe...I agree about the texting, especially on internet boards. I saw one site where a guy wrote a huge article, almost all of which was in text speak, It was like reading a new bloody code.
