Trek character archtypes and cliches.

Post by Rhoades »

Okay, people, I've been developing this idea for a Star Trek story, and I need some input and opinion on what everyone would consider to be common cliche Starfleet characters we've seen through out the series.

A redshirt who has had experience with random Trek enemy number 3 (who just happens to be making an appearance in that week's episode), and is either angry at them, nervous about facing them again, or awed by their cultural superiority to everything in the UFP. During the fight, he'll either be killed saving some superior officer, or he'll live on to fail his friends again and then vow never to fail again. After the fight, he hopes it was worth it. Yes, he hopes to GOD it was worth it.

They're all versatile multitaskers with classical education and hobbies like playing music or reading Shakespeare.

The engineer can fix any problem in 5 hours- but the captain wants it done in four.
The engineer does it sucessfuly even though he's had a whole hour less to do it in that stated, and it works perfectly!

I take it you never heard Scotty's explanation of all of this. Always say you can get it done in twice the amount of time it will actually take, that way you are considered a miracle worker. I also imagine it would also get you time to do some prelimenary testing (j/k)

Vulcans. I hate Vulcans.....

Star Trek Captains who would sarifice themselves to save others even when it is not practical to do so.

Romulan Ale is illegal yet seems to availiable at every ST gathering (ST VI on the Enteprise, Riker's wedding, and others)

The federation acting ensign smart ass who is treated special because he is the captains bastard love child and doesn't know it. thus earning the emnity and hate of all the other crew members who worked their entire careers and still can't get as much credit as the little fuck, so they toss him out an airlock....after gettinghim drunk off of highly availiable and illegal Romulan Ale.
"If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little."
-George Carlin (1937-2008)

"Have some of you Americans actually seen Football? Of course there are 0-0 draws but that doesn't make them any less exciting."
-Dr Roberts, with quite possibly the dumbest thing ever said in 10 years of SDNet.

The half-human, half-alien-of-the-week who is confused about their heritage and unsure whether to accept their human side or their alien side, because OF COURSE the two are completely irreconcilable.

How does that stammering idiot with a disturbing addiction to holodeck softcore porn qualify as a serious, competent officer?

The visiting officer with the non-English based accent (with Chekov being the exception to the rule). If you're from a non-English culture you'll have an accent as thick as waffle batter despite the fact that aliens will have no accent at all.

And let's not forget the old friend/shipmate bit where the person is covering up a crime or about to foolishly do something to threaten the ship.
