"The Reset button"...
When would you consider it acceptable to use the legendary red button?
Re: "The Reset button"...
When it means that Voyager and Enterprise don't get made.Sektor31 wrote:When would you consider it acceptable to use the legendary red button?

Like in Enterprise, killing 2300 colonists in one episode, having time travel, but deciding not to bring them back in the next episode, despite the fact that it wasn't supposed to have happened?Uraniun235 wrote:Or, sometimes what happened in the previous episode is irrelevant in the next episode.

No, those hands(and the void behind them) are the Great Will of the Universe from Excel Saga. She keeps reseting reality every time Excel dies. Sometimes, she helps others, too.
And she's slept with poor Pedro.

The only shows I've ever seen that used the "reset button" effectively were the children's cartoon, "Mighty Max," and my favorite series of all time, "Babylon 5." In the final episode of MM, Max goes back in time to when he was first given his red cap and earned the title "Mighty One." Of course, then the series begins anew.
B5 used a similar trick in one of its later episodes, when it showed that humans were developing in Vorlons. This, of course, led a spectacularly deep consideration of what it meant for the humans to be Vorlons (God), and led to the same conclusions as Lord of the Flies.
Both of these are effective uses of the "reset button," because they effectively reinforce EVERYTHING that was used as a theme throughout both series. They show how powerful destiny is, and how everything is destined from the beginning--even when we don't realize it.

Not to totally pull the thread off topic, but I used to love Mighty Max. It didn't pull the punches, considering it was a kids cartoon. They were venturing into occult territory with every episode, between zombie parasites, life-sucking mummies, and the like. Plus, between Rob Paulsen, Tony Jay, and Tim Curry it had some pretty good talent.
But I never got to see the final episode! I saw the second to last one, with the cliffhanger, but never managed to catch the follow-up. What happened?

I can't remember the names of the characters, anymore, but basically after Max's bodyguard friend was killed by the giant spider in Seattle, Max went back to the badguy's keep to fight it out with his enemies. The lava men betrayed the bad guy, but Virgil apparently betrayed Max and begins leading his enemies into combat. Finally, Max took one of the Imperial walker-looking machines and had a clear shot with the bad guy holding Virgil (so that the prophecy of both of those characters being killed by Max comes true if he shoots). Both the bad guy and Virgil realize what's going on, and Virgil tells Max to shoot as it is his destiny (and Virgil's, and everyone elses). Max chooses not to fire, as destiny is equal parts free will, chance, and pre-determined events, and Virgil realizes that he's missed his chance. They keep fighting, but Virgil escapes and re-joins Max. The bad guys start routing the good ones, and Virgil and Max flee to Stone Henge. Virgil tells Max that he's altered his destiny, and he's really pissed off at him, but then he realizes that Max might have raised his destiny to a higher level. Skullmaster (that's his name) catches Max at Stone Henge, and Virgil sacrifices himself to save Max. Max realizes what's happened, and offers Skullmaster the cap. Skullmaster reaches out to take it, but then Max puts it back on his head and jumps through a nearby portal. He winds up back in time where the whole series started, with him getting the package with the cap in it, realizes what's happened, and vows that this time "we're really gonna kick some Skullmaster butt."The Prime Necromancer wrote:Not to totally pull the thread off topic, but I used to love Mighty Max. Wasn't the bodyguard's name Norman? Though at one point he was also Thor.Master of Ossus wrote:I can't remember the names of the characters, anymore, but basically after Max's bodyguard friend was killed by the giant spider in Seattle, Max went back to the badguy's keep to fight it out with his enemies. Oh, and Mighty Max was awesome. And with him possessing the knowledge of what would happen, not only can he save the world, but he can make a lot of money too.
