Battle of Hoth Personal Force Substitutions

Post by SAMAS »

Inspired by what the Elemental/Stormie thread has mutated into.

Simply put, without going into overkill(No Bolos/Culture/etc...), what forces would you want to use if you had to protect Echo Base from the Imperial Assault?

Provide your own choices, and/or debate the choises of others.

One detatchment of Ultramarines, with Imperial Guard artillery support.

I was beaten to it, but a 40k solution would be my method...

Imperial Guard in properly organised defenses with heavy support...

Perhaps a Legio of Titans to help take the fight to the Empire...

A company Adeptus Astartes, deployable via Thunderhawk...

Plus air support in the form of Mauraders, etc...

I always thought it would be cool to see some gundam-esque mecha vs. an AT-AT.

I think zakus of GMs would get smashed, but somebody with an actual gundam would rule the battle.

Q: How does Luke kill AT-AT in TESB?
A:(partially) With his lightsaber.

Q: And what is gundams beam saber?
A: A really big lightsaber.

'Nuff said.

Yes I would love Vegeta Defending the base but that would make it a slaughter

So instead 40k Marines would be good though better yet, Two squadrens of A-wings would be better...

How about Affront commandos
Or just one Martian from Stranger in a Strange Land would destroy the entire fleet in seconds.

Well, for the minimum necesary manpower, I'd go with a minefield with proton bombs and scatered AP mines. With a big enough mine, an AT-AT will go down.

Imperial Guard.

Valhallan Armoured Cavalry Division.

Leman Russ', Demolishers, Basilisks, Griffons, Chimeras and Sentinels.

Not to mention thousands of troops who were born and bred on a world that for all intensive purposes IS Hoth.

Royal Manticoran Marines (depending on if their anti-vehicle missiles work as hypothesized in debate, otherwise they're screwed), with Grayson Guardsmen thrown in as a bodyguard force for VIPs.

Assuming that the Rebels would flee anyway (SOP for when their base is found), a Heavy Gear force might do OK. Artemis' quad 20mm chainguns should be decent anti-infantry (concussion has been shown to be effective against clonetroopers). The ST-18 Vandal carries a pair of hypervelocity artillery missiles so large they can only be mounted on an MBT. A Long Fang Naga could provide artillery support from deep trenches. Most Gears carry mortars to provide fire support, so while they would still get slaughtered, they could provide a decent combat force.

The Earth forces from HG I'm not quite as sure about. They rely on high speed/low survivability units, but 150 kph is not nearly fast enough (IMHO) to evade an AT-ATs guns. Their particle accelerators and artilley most likely wouldn't do much to an AT-AT, though the AT-STs would most likely have problems. THe only way I could see an AT-AT having problems is if a particle beam causes some sort of electronic glitch, but the electronics are most likely too hardened for this. GRELs would give stormtroopers fits once they got inside, with their genetic tweaking (Mordred-types are 4 standard deviations above normal human strength, and 1 deviation over on agility. Morganas are 3 devs above strength, 2 agility, and are trained as SpecOps: either recon, commando, or sniper). Roughly 75% of the infantry force carries laser weaponry, while the others carry weapons ranging from 10mm machineguns to 55mm mortars to rocket launchers to 23mm anti-materiel rifles.

Or just give me end-of-game Psilons from Master of Orion II. Their battleships (third-largest class, below titans and doom stars) can carry a superlaser capable of splitting a planet. Range is unknown, since the combat scale is wonked, but if it's equal to TL range, then the Imperial Fleet would have to reconsider attacking Hoth.

Well, yes, though I'd prefer Ubuu, but since you already claimed the DBZ universe I'm trying others instead. Besides, Vegetto would do even better. Or that funky Goku/Gohan fusion that almost occurred (if only Gohan had worn the earring!).

Red shirts. Billions of 'em. The Imperials will eventually run out of ammo and get tired of fighting.

Why bother? Vegeta from the Freeza saga should be tough enough to wipe the mat with any ground forces as well as the orbiting fleet.

Coolness factor substitue: Mobile Suits (Zeon ones, of course).

Really good substitute: Some Culture drones.

*Thwap* No Culture. Read first post. If it weren't for that, I'd go for a brigade of Bolo Mk.XXXIII's.

Hammers Slammers. Vehicle mounted weaponry with anti-satellite capacity. So much intel capability built into the typical tank that the trick is using any fraction of it well. Speed, agility, and really-plain-silly firepower. (then again, this is the SW universe, home of utterly-fecking-stupid firepower...)

Still, id like to see Col. Hammers boys mixing it up with the stormies, et. al.

From Assault:

EEK. That's tough, personally if you're only trying to delay I would just bury tons of Elementals and Jump Pack equiped mechs in the snow and when the Walkers were behind the lines they're suddenly surrounded by mean-lean-fighting machines. Would last all of 20 minutes, but I think I could destroy at least 1 At-At, and quite a few At-Sts

For Assault:

This is alot nicer, 2 clusters of ground attack mechs, plus 1 cluster of aerospace fighters. All beloning to Clan Snow Raven (meaning ground is shit, but the Air is the best of the best of the best). Let the Aerofighters do their thing, and then the Ground troops should have a mop-up job.

Shin Dragon + Shin Getter Robo... wait that classifies as uber nevermind.

Hmm.. a pack of Invaders. Hide the suckers in the snow then let them go all machine-beast on the AT-STs and AT-AT's at the first opportunity they get.

I say instead of Vegeta or Ubuu send in Krillain! By the frieza saga he is pasted the point you need for planet vaprozation... Besides the bald guy could use some glory. :)

Anyway I would prob use Starfire marines from the Weber novels. HVMs would ruin anybodies day. (If I remember correctly). Or howabout ACS units from the Poslenn invasion series with a single pdc?
