BBC wrote: Filipinos warned on crucifixions

Health officials in the Philippines have issued a warning to people taking part in Easter crucifixion rituals.
They have urged them to get tetanus vaccinations before they flagellate themselves and are nailed to crosses, and to practise good hygiene.
On Good Friday dozens of very devout Catholics in the Philippines re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
It is something that has become a huge tourist attraction, although the Church frowns on the practice.
Disinfect
The health department has strongly advised penitents to check the condition of the whips they plan to use to lash their backs, the Manila Times newspaper reports.
They want people to have what they call "well-maintained" whips.
In the hot and dusty atmosphere, officials warn, using unhygienic whips to make deep cuts in the body could lead to tetanus and other infections.
And they advise that the nails used to fix people to crosses must be properly disinfected first. Often people soak the nails in alcohol throughout the year.
Every Good Friday, in towns across the Philippines, people atone for sins or give thanks for an answered prayer by re-enacting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Giving thanks
In the northern city of San Fernando alone there will be three separate improvised Golgothas - the biblical name for the hill where Jesus was crucified.
Four people there have pledged to have their feet and hands nailed to wooden crosses, while others will flog themselves while walking barefoot through villages.
Sometimes people repeat the penance year after year, like the fish vendor who will be nailed to the cross for the 15th and last time on Friday to give thanks for his mother's recovery from tuberculosis.
With long hair and a beard, wearing sandals and a crown of thorns, he is tied with cloth to the cross but also has nails driven through the flesh of his hands and feet, avoiding the bones.
Real nails are used in the re-enactments
This is one of the most far out things I have ever read done for Christianity.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I've read about people getting nailed to a cross to commemorate Jesus during Easter in the past, and I was disturbed. They might be getting tetanus! Now that they've addressed that, it doesn't seem so crazy.

They're getting fucking nailed to a fucking cross. That doesn't seem crazy to you?

So you don't find people nailing themselves to a goddamn piece of wood crazy?
Here, ladies and gentlemen, we see a fine example of the Sarcastus Non Detectus in it's native thread enviroment.
Perhaps someone with a better memory than I can tell me, but didn't they do this in Europe during the Black Plague as well? Or was that just the flagellation?

The Flagellants did whip themselves, but I don't know of any self-crucifixion.
IIRC, a fair number of first and second century Christians practically set themselves up for Roman persecution and execution, believing it made them more spiritual, closer to Christ, get to heaven faster, etc.

It couldn't have been a large percentage of their actual movement or Christianity would never have survived to infect the world like it has. Then again it could correspond to modern suicide bombers, militant Islam is in no shortage of manpower despite them blowing themselves up.
but I don't know of any self-crucifixion.
The image of some crazed loon trying to hammer both of his own hands to a cross is quite amusing in a sick perverted sort of way.

I believe there was a hint of sarcasm in there The idea that the authorities are more concerned about people getting tetanus rather than the major damaged they are doing to their hands and feet and the potential to simply bleed to death is amusing. If people decided to mutilate themselves in large groups without the religious excuse that Thor or Ao or some such likes to watch his followers suffer I'm pretty sure they'd be entered into the psychological health system.
Get busy living or get busy dying... unless there’s cake.
A lot of those people get themselves crucified every year. Yes, they don't just get themselves nailed to a cross, but they do it multiple times. This has been going on for years, if not decades.
Also, they're doing it wrong. The Romans nailed people through the wrist, not the hand. More painful and damaging that way, but this was an execution method, after all. People and their fake stigmatas...

The whole point of crucifixion was to have an execution that was as drawn-out as possible. The fact that nailing through the wrist is more damaging is actually an argument against it happening. Fact of the matter is, you bleed-out faster though the wrist than through the hand. After all, people commit suicide by slashing their wrists, not by stabbing their hands.
The reason why it has been argued that the Romans nailed people through the wrist was because it was thought the human hand could not hold the body's weight up. In other words, nailing someone through the hand would result in the victim falling off. Recently some dude decided to just cut the speculation and run an actual test. It was on TV, but I was unable to see the result of the test because I had to go somewhere. The way the narrative was going, it suggested that he proved it was, in fact, possible to nail someone through the hand.

And this guy didn't have religious fanaticism as an excuse for doing this?!
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

This kind of thing reminds me of some of the practices of the acetics of India. Even though the so called Tapas practice of a Hindu yogi is worlds different than nailing one's self to a cross of wood. That's just not even in the same ballpark. Do they think they will get somthing out of it?

I really know fuck all about the Romans, so my only source on this is the Bible which I haven't read in years, but I remember something about how the whole nailing thing was supposed to be a special case for Jesus, and they usually used rope, not nails. Anyone know if this is true, or just put into the story to make the Romans evil, because they were doing even worse things that a regular crucifixion?
