Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
I'm probably jumping the gun, but does anyone have any thoughts on this game, particularly the co-op?

Thus far? It doesn't seem to do much to seperate itself from Vegas 1. It's achievement and rank heavy and has got a few new toys but I have yet to notice anything in the single player worth raising the Titanic for. Maybe the multiplayer is better but i'll have to find that out later.
Oh well, at least Vegas' single player isn't as chronically retarded as Call of Duty's. No infinitely spawning enemies with super human aim, AI team mates that are actually usefull, etc.

I hope that Vegas 2 at least eliminates the RETARDED spawning enemies that made any weapon with range of more than about 20m pointless.
I don't care how good your game looks and plays, if you can only handle it all by only spawning 5-10 enemies at a time, then your game is shit.
That said, I'm hanging out for Vegas 2 and won't be able to play it for another few days due to family + easter. Suck.

Bad news, they're back. You can toss grenades into a space like crazy, turn around the corner and BAM. Their will suddenly be 5 guys out of thin air. This happens less frequently than in the previous game but it's still retarded to visually scan an area for zero enemies, then run in and find 8 them suddenly standing where you were looking. At least it's not like Call of Dooty where they will KEEP SPAWNING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. But it's still dumb.weemadando wrote:I hope that Vegas 2 at least eliminates the RETARDED spawning enemies that made any weapon with range of more than about 20m pointless.
When I say the game's SP isn't *as* retarded as CoD, I mean it.

Is this a positive thing? Was Vegas 1 worth playing? Neither myself or my friend have not played the original Vegas, so we will not be annoyed by it feeling like the original.CaptHawkeye wrote:Thus far? It doesn't seem to do much to seperate itself from Vegas 1.

You know, I remember when Rainbow Six was a game about taking down terriorists and defusing bombs, and the like, a game where you spent twenty minutes prior to the mission planning things out and ensuring that all three teams would meet in room XYZ and then flash the entrances, where if you tried to run and gun you would get everyone killed, where the terrirosts would kill the hostages unless you were shit-hot on your timing and blew their brains out before they knew what hit them.
When you could designate each persons equipment loadout and switch between them at will.
Which means that coming back to Rainbow Six and res-spawning fucking enemies? I know lets be like Halo! fuckitfuckitall.

This is more like Rainbow Six Vegas 1.5 than it is a full 2.
have not played the campaign yet, but the multiplayer is similar to before, just with more achievements and such. The ACES system doesn't really seem to give any certain advantages other than unlocking certain weapons.

The graphics are better then the first Vegas, but they still look plain crappy compared to Cod4. Guns with range have some point, sometimes but more then once I’ve literally seen the Tangos materializing out of thin air within 10 feet of me. I’ve yet to play the multiplayer and since I don’t own the game I don’t intend to change that, everything I saw of Vegas mulitplay before was people camping around corners using the lame ‘see without being seen’ shit to ambush anyone so foolish as to actually fucking move around.

1. WRT to lamenting the elder games of the R6 series:
Yes, I sort of miss the planning and the more open and realistic missions. Being able to move through a realistic space was pretty cool. However, the driving force behind the series was not, in fact, the people who enjoyed spending hours fiddling with the AI planning system at the beginning of each level, but rather the fast and lethal multiplayer. Multiplayer maps from the earliest games in the series still persist today.
Meanwhile, the "spawning" is annoying, but it's not like they come out of thin air. If you check your angles correctly, you can take enemies out before they even see you. Yes, once you walk into a certain area, more enemies come from around corners and such, but oh well.
There are things I miss about the original series as well. The ability to manage your entire team, to have multiple teams set to go codes and how awesome large co-op games were, etc. Still, that said, I've had much, much more fun with the Vegas series than I did with any R6 game prior, and I played Rogue Spear and Raven Shield pretty heavily.
2. WRT the similarities to Vegas 1:
Yes, it is essentially more of the same. Yes, it is essentially R6V1.5, by and large. The additions are not earth shattering. However, the addition of fully-featured co-op, cleaning up the gear system, improving squad AI and commands, as well as the host of other tweaks and graphical improvements (yes, the graphics did improve. No, it's not a huge jump, but it is definitely noticable), I think it enters the nebulous state between heavy expansion pack and full-fledged sequel.
3. Multiplayer, ACES, and PEC
The improvements here are obvious. While there are still some things that are somewhat annoying, there are several things that are a lot nicer. Like having four preset gear sets to choose from for online, allowing you to quickly swap loadouts between games. The method of attaining weapons is much improved from the last version, but it still needs work for the next game. One of my favorite weapons is on the Assault Track (which makes sense, as it is an assault rifle), but the way I always used it was as a light sniper weapon, which it also is. The pure "score" system is just a way to get different styles of armor and camo schemes, which is basically a fancy way of saying "useless bragging rights". Actually getting specialized kills gets you specialized guns, which is a nice addition. I mean, if you must have unlockables.
The face mapping program works a little better, but not enough to really make it awesome. You are still a mute if you map your face, which is lame, because it's cool to watch your character's mouth move when you're on voice communications.
Multiplayer I can't give a full review on because I haven't tried all the maps or modes, but co-op terrorist hunt is MUCH improved, especially WRT to scoring, as now you get points for each kill, not just a set amount of points when you win. Team Leader is a very fun mode, and being the team Leader leaves you with a lot of decisions to make concerning how you play. Do you rush ahead for the extraction point? Do you try to kill as many enemies as you can to stop them from spawning, or do you hang back and make the enemy come to you?
As far as the peek around the corner thing, it works well, because while it lets you peek, it still gives you tunnel vision. If your super realism sensor keeps going off, just justify it by assuming they're using the damn snake camera they use to look under doors. It doesn't allow you to make perfect traps, because you still have to spend time going from "Hidden" to "Peeking", and even from "Hidden" to "Sticking gun around the corner". Especially with sprinting, you can make it around a corner before the bastard can bring his gun to bear.
On the subject of sprinting, thank god. They did good sprinting that's not stupid (like Raven Shield's infinite sprint). Just enough to get from cover to cover, or through nasty spots that have a sniper or machinegunner covering them.
In short, I'm having fun. All I need now is to hook up and do some campaign co-op. I need assault points badly. I keep getting all these freaking distance kills and headshots. Even with machineguns.

If you want assault points, you mack sure to use your grenades very frequently. Though Marksman points are still the most common.
The best thing about this game is the ability to wear aviator sunglasses all the time: at night, underground, in the dark, everywhere.

Pretty much, yeah. Rainbow 6 Vegas is a good game, especially multiplayer.Ford Prefect wrote:Is this a positive thing? Was Vegas 1 worth playing? The new one keeps all the best things from the first one, and adds the new ranking system. The biggest improvement is the co-op story mode. In the first game quite a lot was lost if you played co-op, now its not. Though it's down to two people, it almost seems designed to be played two player, and stands out as one of the best co-op games on the 360 in my eyes.
Also, since the ranking system is seamless on and offline, there's a good feeling of continuity between the two modes.
