Torchwood Ep. 2x09 - SPOILERS - Something Borrowed

Post by Broomstick »

Rhys must really, really love Gwen because there isn't a single goddamn reason anyone would put up with the shit he gets from being her significant other. He's also the only one around who's semi-sane and has a backbone.

Me - oh, yeah, I would have post-poned the wedding, no question. There's just no way to explain the belly and you know the entire wedding party is going to be ret-conned, so what's the point?

Ianto is either a masochistic for having to do stuff like buy wedding dresses for pregnant co-workers, or I hope he gets paid really, really well.

I actually liked some of the comic relief.

Tosh is a necrophilliac. Who would have guessed?

Side benefit of being a zombie: the hungry carnivorous alien won't eat you because you've gone "off". Actually, in many ways I like Owen better now that he's dead.

There is a part of me that would have liked to see Jack get pregnant, even through in the first episode of season one he said he wasn't going to do that again. That way, they could just let the alien eat the baby out of him because it's not like Jack is going stay dead, right?

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

He gets extra-legal benefits. Hot, sweaty, barechested benefits.

I'm feeling for Rhys too. It's obvious that Gwen is just using him as an emotional pisspot to help deal with the weirdness at Torchwood, which would be sort-of fine if she didn't then marry him. I can see why the poor guy is smitten, since Gwen is a very lovable woman, but the way she treats him is something he doesn't deserve.

The alien reproduction... I know there are insects and fish with really messed up birthings, but it strikes me as really crazy to leave your eggs - your offspring - with complete strangers for no real reason. Not to mention that Gwen's pregnancy doesn't make a lick of sense: where did the mass for the babies come from when she spends her whole "pregnancy" asleep? How did her skin not burst? A normal pregnancy takes nine months because you just can't rush gestation without killing the baby or the mother, so how did she go through this one just fine?

(Observations from female friend: one, she has the stretchiest shirts ever and two, she sure got her figure back fast. I didn't even notice those)

Overall, it was pretty good for a light episode. Gwen shooting the alien bug in front of everyone and Rhys's face in the chainsaw scene were the best bits for me.

Followed closely by Ianto and Jack dancing. That was cute.

Torchwood rates somewhere between one and three beers this season - meaning drinking that number of them vastly improves the show. (A real stinker would be a six-pack show)

In other words, don't think too hard about the plot holes. Just enjoy the ride and any eye candy you happen to see. (Mmmmmm.... Cap'n Jack...mmmm)

It's the fridge logic that gets me. I enjoy the show, it's all a good laugh, lasers and aliens and hot sweaty man-sex for the whole family - but when I get up for a snack afterwards all the plot holes suddenly become blindingly obvious.

Fortunately, it doesn't make the show any less fun to watch while it's on. You just ignore it, like you ignore the bad acting in a preschool play

Pretty much my take on it too. The plotholes are a mile wide, but these can be ignored while you're watching it.

This series has improved week by week. I think this is largely because it doesn't seem to take itself quite as seriously as it did in the first series and the actors are having more fun with their characters.

I also feel very sorry for Rhys. He's obviously a decent chap who loves Gwen very much and she basically shits all over him. Everything is always geared to what she wants, with no real consideration for him whatsoever. And she is on the verge of snogging Jack ON HER WEDDING DAY and IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. Well rescued, Ianto, although it wasn't entirely a selfless act.

One final point. Freema Ayegmann should be made to sit down with a tape of the last 5 minutes of this episode on repeat loop. THAT is onscreen chemistry. THAT is sexual tension. THAT is professional acting. My TV was white hot by the end of it - it was all I could do stop shouting at Gwen not to kiss him.

Good stuff.

Either next week or the week after that, the guy grows a spine and tells her exactly that. The scene where he finally snaps is spot-on, and he voices pretty much what all the fans are thinking.
