Obesity Kills: Toddler Crushed by Aunt Jabba the Hut

Post by Broomstick »

This is sad and pathetic:
Authorities suspect toddler crushed by obese aunt

Jeremy Roebuck
March 21, 2008 - 4:10PM

LA JOYA - Authorities suspect a morbidly obese, bedridden woman caused the skull fracture that killed her 2-year-old nephew earlier this week.

The toddler - Eliseo Gonzalez Jr. - died Tuesday after police found him unresponsive at her home on the 800 block of Rancho Escondido, on the city's east side

Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies remain tight-lipped about how the injury was inflicted, but Justice of the Peace Bobby Contreras said Friday they believe the woman somehow fell on the child.

Contreras, who pronounced the toddler dead at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, estimated the boy's aunt weighed more than 800 pounds.

"It didn't look like there was any foul play from what I saw," he said.

Sheriff Lupe Treviño declined to discuss the ongoing investigation but described the toddler's death as "suspicious."

Investigators believe he may have been staying at the home after his mother dropped him off for the day. It remains unclear whether there was anyone else there who was supposed to be watching the child besides his bedridden aunt.

Charges of homicide, manslaughter or child endangerment could be filed in the case, pending autopsy results due out Monday, the sheriff said.

"At that point, we will determine whether anyone should be held criminally responsible," he said.

Family members declined to comment Friday about Eliseo's death. But their neighbors were shocked to learn the family had come under criminal investigation.

Maria Marrero said she noticed police and an ambulance pull up outside the house Tuesday morning but was later told by the child's grandmother that his injuries were self-inflicted.

In their version of events, Eliseo had crawled under his aunt's bed and could not be coaxed to come out. While there, he hit his head on the floor several times, Marrero said.

"I don't believe that they would have done anything on purpose to hurt those children," she said. "Nobody in this neighborhood would."

But this week's events are not the first time Eliseo's family has come under suspicion of child abuse.

Investigators with Child Protective Services had been called out to the home five times prior to look into allegations ranging from physical violence to neglect.

They found evidence to substantiate the suspicions in only one case, agency spokesman John Lennan said.

"Whenever we have investigated, the mother has always cooperated with case workers," he said. "And just because someone has had cases called does not necessarily mean there is abuse going on."

Since Tuesday, Eliseo's three siblings - a set of 1-year-old twins and a 5-year-old - have been temporarily placed with a relative, pending the conclusion of the criminal investigation.
Who the hell thinks a bedridden blob is a good babysitter for a 2 year old? And I'd like to bitch-slap the idiots who keep feeding these people who are too obese to move.

1) If you're unable to get a fucking *toddler* out from underneath the bed, you should not be babysitting, QEfuckingD

2) Does a toddler even have the strength to give itself a skull-fracture by banging its head against the floor, especially if its movement is restrained by a bed above it?

Well no fucking shit, sherlock. You don't have to go out of your way to abuse something to still be guilty of criminal neglect.

Because, you know, five calls reporting abuse would *never* imply that something is going on that is being covered up, would it? Even if nothing is going on, it's worth investigating further to stop whomever keeps making the calls. Nothing against the social workers, though, they've got on hell of a shitty job to do. I don't envy anyone whose career is to go in and possibly split up families, generally something which can set a lot of people off to violence, no matter how justified the need.

Something doesn't add up. Someone weighing in at 800 lbs usually can't even turn themselves over. The "he hit his head on the floor" line does sound just like the "he fell down the stairs" line child abusers use.

That doesn't add up. A 2 year old child could not hit their head on the floor hard enough to fracture their skull, and an 800 pound women would likely be unable to leave the bed.

I suspect he was playing under the bed as they claimed, except, instead of hitting his head, she rolled over on the bed onto the part that was over him, and her weight was such that the mattress, previously dipping on the far side of the bed (perhaps far enough to touch the floor), instead was dipping on the side he was under, pinning and crushing him.

People like that are a mockery of the human form. Why aren't Christian preachers railing against that instead of gays?

Because human blobs aren't having sex and gay people are. C'mon, Mike, you know that non-procreative sex is the worst of all possible evils. It's much more important to stop people loving each other and mutually enjoying their bodies than it is to cure illness or world hunger or stop wars....

I imagine a guy like that preacher probably doesn't have sex very much, due to his unattractiveness and inability to perform a number of sexual positions. Probably kill her if he tried missionary, and having her on top would be against Paul's epistles or something. Maybe that's part of the reason why they rail against sex - if they can't get any, NO ONE WILL.

But back on topic. People that morbidly obese burn more calories than the regular person to maintain baseline metabolism because their bodies have to work that much harder to maintain normal functions. Blood has to be pumped through all those 800 pounds. That woman has seven times more body mass to keep alive than I do. It's not uncommon for people that obese to be eating more than 10,000 calories a day. This much food for people who can't get up to prepare their own food or earn the money for their food. Typically they need several people taking care of them at all hours, since they can't take care of themselves at all. And yet, somehow, everyone lets them keep eating several times what an average person eats daily. You'd think sheer economics would make them cut back on food.

I'm just at a failure to understand.

If you buy in bulk at a discount grocery, extreme high fat and carbohydrate foods are cheaper. I used to live near one and was amazed at what you can get there in terms of precooked deep fat fried foods. Hell there are 'family sized' cereal boxes (double regular box) of generic brand cereal, the two cheapest the 'cheerios' rip off, and the super sugary 'lucky charms' rip off.
