So, Obama released his tax forms, and I was surprised to see that once he got elected as a senator his income shot up by OVER $1 MILLION DOLLARS. How much do senators get paid? Or is there something else in there? It just lists it as adjusted gross income, but that seems high to me. Also interesting, this site (which has copies of the returns) shows that even though the Obamas have been attending church regularly they had ~1% of their income listed as taxable deductions. The site posts that it's possible they donated in non-taxable ways, but I still find it interesting.

It’s actually all in the tax returns at the site you linked to.
The Obamas filed jointly which means the reported numbers are the family income and for 2006 their combined wages were $430,000 and their business income $506,000. This business income comes from Barrack’s side in the form of payments from Random House ($403,750) and Dystel & Goderich, a literary management firm according to a quick google search for $147,490 for a total income of $551,240 before applying deductible expenses.
The 2005 numbers are similar with $471,000 in salaries and $1,141,000 in business income. The business income, once again, is composed payments from Random House in the amount of $874,167 and Dystel & Goderich for $335,706 for a total business revenue of $1,209,873.

The Obamas filed a joint return, so what you see on that 2006 form of theirs is their combined income.
A Senator like Barack gets about $160K in salary from the US gov. He also got lots of book royalties, and of course his wife makes money too.
But pretty much all senators are rich, or at least upper-middle-class, long before they even run for office.
