Man accidentally shoots wife while installing satellite dish

You can't make this shit up.
Deepwater Man Fatally Shoots Wife While Installing Satellite TV

Patsy Long, 34, of Deepwater, died after being shot in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun on Saturday. Her husband, Ronald Long, fired the shot from the inside of their home after several unsuccessful efforts to punch a hole through the exterior wall using other means.

Henry County sheriff's deputies said the woman was hit by the second of two shots fired by her husband.

Long was given CPR by neighbors and family until medics arrived, police said. She was transported by air ambulance, but was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 6 p.m.

"He was under the impression that everybody was inside the residence, that he knew where everybody was at,” said sheriff's department spokesman Maj. Robert Hills.

Hills said a person involved in such a case normally would be charged with manslaughter, but that would be up to the prosecutor.

"Once we complete a diagram of the incident, we will be submitting everything to the prosecuting attorney and let him decide if he wants to press criminal charges," Hills said.

Henry County Coroner Scott Largent declined to release details about Patsy Long's death until the sheriff's department completes its investigation.

On Tuesday morning, Henry County Prosecuting Attorney Richard M. Shields said he has yet to receive the case from the sheriff's department.

Neighbor Mark Lassince said he believed it was a tragic accident.

"Bad things happen to good people,” Lassince said.

Patsy and Ronald Long were raising their two children in their rural home overlooking Truman Lake.

"I was in the shower, and the son came in and told me his mom had been shot, so we went up there to see if we could help,” Lassince said.

Patsy Long worked as a carhop at a Sonic restaurant in Warsaw, Mo.

“She was a good person, you know, took care of her family,” Lassince said.

What kind of imbecile tries to use a gun to drill a hole in the wall? Was he just too fucking lazy to get his power drill or find an extension cord? Did he need to go to the hardware store and get a new drill bit, and figure it wasn't worth the bother?

I think "imbecile" is the key word here.

My husband and a friend managed to install our satellite TV dish with no problem, and no firearms required. Hell, our TV provider will install your dish for free when you first sign up for an account. Probably under theory that if customers kill themselves putting one up the account will be closed soon after.

For fuck's sake, there are enough things to worry about when drilling through a wall without bringing a firearm into the equation. The NRA has a lot of front glossing over incidents like this when gun control is concerned.

I really hope they are able to charge this clown. Not only for the death of his wife, but for recklessly using the weapon is such an inappropriate manner.

He might get off scot-free under the "it could have been me" clause of redneck justice (that's the same one that drunks use to get off DUI repeatedly, especially in rural communities).

The accidental firearm death rate in the US is .27 per 100,000 according to the US Center for Disease Control database.
More people (.30 per 100k) die from being accidentally hit or struck by someone else than die from accidental gunshot wounds.

Compared to the homicide rate, accidents are a nonstarter when arguing the pros and cons of gun control in the US.

Also, the NRA doesn't 'gloss over' accidents as one of their primary functions is gun and range safety training, along with marksmanship training.
The politicization of the NRA is a fairly recent thing and only really came about during the late 1970's.

Hell, even the fucking Brady Campaign doesn't use the accident rate as an argument.

But...

why a .22? This almost says to me that he actually checked the size of the hole he needed and selected a bullet that would be the right size.

Speaking of, it wouldn't surprise in the least me if the shooter was drinking while attempting Home Improvement With A Firearm.

.22's are among the most common (if not the most common) guns in circulation.
It sounds as if this bright boy would have trouble breathing and chewing gum at the same time, so I doubt he reasoned out his caliber choice like that.

Admittedly, the usual tack taken by gun control proponents isn't "People have repeatedly proven themselves too fucking stupid to own guns."

Darwin Awards are bestowed upon those who kill themselves. This dumbfuck killed his wife whose only misjudgement was marrying him. I don't think it's applicable.

Successful reproduction is also a deal-breaker if I remember correctly, unless of course you manage to take out your entire line of progeny before or during your self-destruction.

Well, he's certainly taken himself out of the reproductive game, now that his wife is dead. Hopefully, any future potential mates will be wary.

Yes, but they have two surviving children according to the article.

Wait, 24,000 handgun deaths, in a country with 16,000 homicides annually? Given the very low rate of accidental gun deaths cited by Glocksman, I can only conclude that number must include suicides, because something like 80% of all firearm deaths in Canada are from suicide, though I'm unsure of US figures (even so, they are plenty of other quick ways to off oneself other than a handgun, including long guns).

It's not out of line. In 2001, total firearms deaths were almost 30,000 according to http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUT ... NSTAT.html (it was one of the few sources I could find which was not obviously politically charged).

I want to know how he told his children what he did.

If this isn't a reason to place them with competent relatives, I don't know what it. Assuming they are minors, get them the hell out of that place.
