11-Year-Old Dies after Prayer Healing Ineffective

WESTON, Wis. — An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said Madeline Neumann died Sunday.

"She got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.

Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl's parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to "apparently they didn't have enough faith," the police chief said.

They believed the key to healing "was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray," he said.

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.

Telephone messages left at the Neumann home by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

The family does not attend an organized church or participate in an organized religion, Vergin said. "They have a little Bible study of a few people."

The parents told investigators their daughter last saw a doctor when she was 3 to get some shots, Vergin said. The girl had attended public school during the first semester but didn't return for the second semester.

Officers went to the home after one of the girl's relatives in California called police to check on her, Vergin said. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The relative was fearful the girl was "extremely ill, dire," Vergin said.

The girl has three siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, the police chief said.

"They are still in the home," he said. "There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."

The girl's death remains under investigation and the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges, the chief said.

The family operates a coffee shop in Weston, which is a suburb of Wausau, Vergin said.
Even though we're a Blue state, it seems we still have our fair share of retarded fundies.

It's horrible that some young girl had to die because of her parents' ignorance, and it's even worse that they have three more children they can endanger - I'm just glad that those three are older, and hopefully can learn from this and take care of themselves if their parents refuse to.

Do nothing when your child gets sick = criminal neglect.

Do nothing when your child get sick but talk to imaginary friend about it = "no signs of abuse".

And they even called upon other people to pray - as if their omnipotent, omnipresent god was unaware of their daughter's illness. If it was not for the tragedy involved, I'd find this funny.

Way to fucking go there, Super Cop... They prayed one to death, but there isn't any "abuse". Right, I'll just go ahead and say that this guy and probably everyone in his department are complete fucking Keystone Cops Assclowns.

People that ignorant, negligent and downright fucking stupid should not be allowed to raise children. They've already killed one, they can't be given the opportunity to do it again, or raise their remaining children to follow these same incredibly fucked up beliefs.

Considering FOX News' reputation for being right-wing, I'm surprised they reported this story, as it obviously proves being a devout Christian like the Republicans demand all Americans to be is NOT going to solve everything. Or are the right-wingers able to find excuses besides "the parents weren't devout enough," excuses that won't make others think, "the poor girl died because her parents were dumbasses, and I'm going to end up like that if I expect prayer to solve all my problems"?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Obviously prayer doesn't make the world perfect. You also need a free market and the US Army.

Don't forget mom's apple pie.

Anyone care to ponder how this would have turned out if the parents had prayed to Zeus instead?

Kid still woulda died, but Zeus would come down and bang the mom so she'd give birth to a demigod.

Then Hera would pretty much have the rest of the family horribly killed, scarring the god-child for life before he's shuffled off into the foster care system, where it inevitably fails him, and he ends up becoming some sort of super-criminal.

Well looks like Dawkins was right in that prayer has a negative effect on people with medical complaints.

So lets review, home schooling, not taken to a doctor in eight years, family led bible study, parents that believe in necromancy.
The girl's death remains under investigation and the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges, the chief said.
Good, they are guilty of criminal negligence at the least.

I love how they don't even consider the possibility that their methods might be horribly wrong.

Then again, it is sadly true. Their lack of faith on the achievements of modern medicine did bring about their child's demise.

You know, when I hear stories like this I'm reminded of a sort of modern parable that I was told during my religious days.
The Spartan's Story wrote:A man lives near a river that is flooding and when the waters are just starting to reach his house a truck drives by and offers to drive him to safey. He waves them off and says, "No, thanks. God will save me."

As the waters continue to rise, he's forced onto his roof and a boat comes by offering to take him to safety but again he waves them away saying, "No, thanks. God will save me."

Finally, he's standing on the very peak of his roof with the flood waters lapping at his shoes and a helicopter flies by and drops a harness to fly him to safety. Yet again, he waves them away shouting, "No, thanks. God will save me."

He drowns. When he reaches the Pearly Gates he goes through, walks right up to God and asks, "Hey! Why didn't you save me?" God replies, "I sent you a truck, a boat and a helicopter. What more did you want?"
I'm sure any member of the board can easily guess how the above applies to the OP.

Of course, nowadays I'd be inclined to stop the story right at the "he drowns" bit but that's besides the point.

Mighty Zeus would have smote them with a thunderbolt, and told them to obey doctors, whom are after all, traditionally ministers of his son Apollo, and stop being idiots.

If I were a neighbours, I would have called the CIA's trick of child molestation on these fuckers. And I would have been right.
"They are still in the home," he said. "There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."
They just demonstrated mental incapability, if not complete mental retardation, of taking care of these children. How does that not count as abuse? Either way, child services or whatever the flying they are called, should have been called as soon as this was found out.

Wisconsin Parents Didn't Expect Daughter to Die During Prayer

WESTON, Wis. — The mother of an 11-year-old girl who died of untreated diabetes said Wednesday that she did not know her daughter was terminally ill as she prayed for her to get better.

Madeline Neumann died Sunday from a treatable form of diabetes.

Her mother, Leilani Neumann, told The Associated Press that she never expected her daughter, whom she called Kara, to die. The family believes in the Bible, and it says healing comes from God, but they are not crazy, religious people, she said.

Click here to read a testimonial by Leilani Neumann on AmericasLastDays.com.

The girl's father, Dale Neumann, a former police officer, said he has friends who are doctors. He started CPR "as soon as the breath of life left" his daughter's body, he said.

Other family members called 911 to seek emergency help, Leilani Neumann said.

"We are remaining strong for our children," she said. "Only our faith in God is giving us strength at this time."

The couple has three other children.

Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin has said an autopsy determined Madeline died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body.

She had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness, he said.

But Leilani Neumann said her daughter, a straight A student, was in good health until recently.

"We just noticed a tiredness within the past two weeks," she said. "And then just the day before and that day (she died), it suddenly just went to a more serious situation. We stayed fast in prayer then. We believed that she would recover. We saw signs that to us, it looked like she was recovering."

Her daughter had no fever and there was warmth in her body, she explained.

The family does not belong to an organized religion or faith, Leilani Neumann said.

"We just believe in the Bible, that's all," she said. "This is our faith."

Her husband added that, "We believe the word of God and live according to its precepts."

Leilani Neumann said the family is not worried about a police investigation into her daughter's death because "our lives are in God's hands. We know we did not do anything criminal. We know we did the best for our daughter we knew how to do."

Vergin said he expect the investigation to wrap up by Friday and the findings to be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges.

The family moved to Weston from California about two years ago to open a coffee shop and be closer to other relatives, the Neumanns said. They live in rural Weston, in a modern, middle class home in the some woods. A basketball hoop is set up in the driveway.

Officers went to the home after a relative in California asked police to check on the girl. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

According to Vergin, the parents told investigators Madeline last saw a doctor when she was 3 to get some shots. The girl had attended public school during the first semester but didn't return for the second semester, he said.

Mrs. Neumann said she deeply loves all her children and has nurtured them spiritually, emotionally and physically.

"Our lives are in God's hands and whatever we go through we are just going to trust him," she said. "We need healing. We are going through the healing process."
This is such bullshit. If this child died while they were performing pagan healing rituals instead of Christian ones, who wants to bet the parents would be in prison and their kids in the hands of CPS already?

I want to strangle the bitch. Or when SHE gets an illness, deny her any form of medicine and instead let people pray while showing the medicine that could cure her in a jify. Then she will get the idea just what his poor daughter suffered trough.

And I don't fucking buy that she didn't notice that the girl was fucking sick. I think she deliberately ignored her kid being sick and merely excused it away. I wouldn't be surprised if she and his husband beaten the kid up when she was complaining about the symptoms and only recognised it when she was unable to stand up.

If it were up to me, I would fucking charge them with child abuse, deliberate criminal intent and whatever is legalise for refusing to lift a finger to help. Take away the other kids and sterilise the parents for a lifetime to boot. Such stupidity cannot be non-genetic.

If the girl's sickness was so difficult to notice, how is it that an aunt was so concerned that she called the police?
