Expats vote Singapore, Copenhagen top places: survey

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Asian expatriates have ranked Singapore as the best place to live in the world for its safe and clean environment, while Europeans chose Copenhagen, a survey showed on Tuesday.

Asian expats chose Singapore over Hong Kong (15th place) and Shanghai (78th place) and placed Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra as well as two Japanese cities Kobe and Yokohama in their top ten list of favorite locations, said ECA International, a human resource consultancy for multinationals.

Lee Quane, general manager of ECA International, said that Singapore's solid infrastructure, low crime rate and clean air made it a favorable place to live.

"While Hong Kong has seen an improvement in some categories, such as personal security, air pollution remains the biggest cause for its lower rankings relative to Singapore," Lee said in a statement.

Singapore is competing with Hong Kong as a location for banking and financial services.

For locations in China and India, Shanghai and Chennai (138th place out of a total of 300 locations) came in top for Asian expats, said the annual survey.

European expats ranked Copenhagen as their top choice to live in the world. They placed three Swiss cities -- Geneva, Basel and Bern -- and three German cities -- Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich -- in their top ten.

East European cities such as Bratislava and Bucharest have made improvements in this year's survey because of advances in security, housing and health, the survey said.

European expats rated Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, as their 20th choice and Romania's capital of Bucharest in 14th place.

In the Middle East, Manama, the capital of Bahrain, ranked top in the region along with Dubai and Muscat. Baghdad, in last place globally, lost marks for poor security, the survey said. Top 10 best locations in the world for Asian expats:

1) Singapore - Singapore
2) Australia - Sydney
3 ) Japan - Kobe, Australia - Melbourne
5) Denmark - Copenhagen
6) Australia - Canberra
7) Canada - Vancouver
8 ) Japan - Yokohama, New Zealand - Wellington
10) Ireland - Dublin

(Reporting by Melanie Lee, editing by Neil Chatterjee)
Questionable findings imo. Real Asian expats don't fear kidnappings.

I think Copenhagen is a reasonably agreeable first place for the EU side.

When you say Asian, do you mean European or American citizens living in an Asian country that have been expatriated? Or do you mean Asian people going to live in another Asian country that have been expatriated?

When I was in Hong Kong, our "guide" said that that huge wall of "fog" coming from the ocean was actually dust and stuff straight out of mainland China (I'm not sure that's true...). Could that be one of the reasons why Hong Kong has unsatisfactory air?

The fact that they ranked Canberra 6th shows how little they know about anything. Even people from Canberra knock Canberra. It's a hole. I assume the only reason it's there is because you can get XXX porn.

On another note, my experience tells me people from Asia don't like Perth very much. I can't really figure that one out. I guess Perth is a "nice place to live but wouldn't want to visit" kind of city.

2) Australia - Sydney
I'm surprised. Sydney is such a hole.

Canberra has politicians, the Raiders and art galleries. There's no possible reason you'd want to go there.

If Sydney is a hole, is there any city in Australia that isn't a hole?

Considering that dust clouds from China have crossed the entire Pacific Ocean I would be highly unsurprised by that factoid.

For some reason, the "Singapore - Singapore" listing there cracked me up. Yes, I know it's basically a city-state, but I still think it's funny.

That is amazing. In a rather horrible way.

Something like 10% of the population of Sydney is now British. I hear Melbourne is superior, though.

All of the places that aren't Sydney. Seriously, rural South Australia better than Sydney.

(Note, my opinion of Sydney may have been influenced by the fact that when I go there I am both bedridden by hayfever AND rendered insensible by antihistamines, but this opinion has been reinforced by pretty much everyone else I know who's ever gone to Sydney, so I feel justified in holding it.)

I guess I am too used to the dirt and dust that goes around Singapore to notice anything in Sydney when I am there. (Though, a return home immediately incites a bout of allergies that take months to around dealing with. After that, it's to deal with the onset of eczema.)

Strange thing for me, I was fine in Beijing - during the spring, when the entire Gobi Desert was blowing into my lungs - so I know it's not the pollution. I think there must be some kindly plant there that does its best to warn me to stay as far away from the city as possible.

Yeah, but Copenhagen have improved enormously! They have not had Autonome riots in weeks and it was several days ago that they last printed the Muhamed cartoons...
