On DVD ripping, and .avi editing.

I've downloaded AutoGK in an effort to back up my DVDs so they can be watched on my laptop.

However, it seems that when I rip a DVD, I can't copy individual movies, but I rather seem to get every episode on the DVD.

Am I using the program pooly, or do I need some sort of AVI editor that can break up these .avis?

I'm not sure I follow you about getting an episode instead of a movie. Clarify?

I am assuming you are talking about television episodes. What you do is, you put in your dvd and open AutoGK. When choosing the input file, choose a .IFO file. Doing this will bring up a list of choices. You will notice that the choices are listed by the length of the episodes. Here is a screenshot. Choose where you want the finished file to be saved. Choose your audio, subtitles, and size (custom or predefined). Add the job then start it.

If you rip a film or episode into more than one CD, AutoGK will create each CD and then create a single file with them combined. At least in the version I use it does. I haven't tried the latest version.

Which will only work if the dvd makers put each episode into a separate program chain. If they put all of them into the same program chain and separated them only by chapters, you're SOL, as Auto Gordian Knot has no way to rip chapters separately.

There are other programs, most notably DVD Decrypter, which can. Of course, DVD Decrypter will leave you with a giant VOB file on your hard drive. You can just point Auto Gordian Knot at that IFO that's right next to the VOB, and use it normally from there.

Alternatively, you can just use Virtualdub to separate the episodes from the one big video file.

Edit: Program chain is what PGC stands for. If you have a dvd with 4 45 min episodes on it, and you see 4 45 min PCGs, you can follow JLTuckers instructions, but if you see one 3 hour PGC, you'll have to do it one of the ways I outlined. If you do it the first way, the first thing you'd have to do is determine how many chapters are in each episode, then use DVD Decrypter to rip the first set of that many chapters. For example, if each episode has 5 chapters, one for the teaser, one for the intro, one for the first half, one for the second half, and one for the credits, you'd select chapters one through 5 (or chapters 1, 3 and 4, to leave out the intro and the credits) and just rip those.

If you chose the second option, use virtualdub to open the ripped file with all the episodes in it, navigate to where the episode you want to separate out starts and press the home key, then navigate to where the episode ends and press the end key. Make sure both audio and video are in direct stream copy, and select "save as avi" from the file menu.

There is people still using DVDecrypter/VDub and shit? Wow, flashback to 1999 when I was ripping to early bittorrent with a p3 450mhz (and it took 8 HOURS per DVD to DIVX)

DVD Decrypter still works against alot of copy protection schemes that most programs can't handle.

Yeah, I use AutoMKV when I want to do something quick, and Gordian Knot (the full version) when I want a few more options, and they both use DVD Decrypter.
