Royal Mint unveils coin designs

Image

The winning entry in a competition to design the first new British coin series for 40 years has been unveiled.

The designs, which each feature a part of the royal coat of arms, will be on coins from 1p to £1, with the familiar Queen's head image on the other side.

Old coins will remain legal tender alongside the new versions being introduced this summer.

The designs mean no more 50p coins with Britannia, the female personification of Britain, will be produced.

'Tremendous honour'

There were 4,000 entries to the public competition to find the new designs.

Matthew Dent, 26, from Bangor, Gwynedd, won the competition. He will have his work stamped on the side of millions of coins.

The royal coat of arms featured in Matthew's designs are a symbol of the reigning monarch.

Mr Dent said: "For designs of mine to appear on a medium as significant and prestigious as the United Kingdom's coinage and to be produced and circulated in millions is a tremendous honour."

The six designs on the 1p through to the 50p coins can be pieced together to form a complete image of the royal shield of arms. The £1 coin features the complete shield.

It is the first time a single design has been used across a range of coins in this way.

Coins featuring the old familiar designs such as the one penny piece's portcullis and chains will stay in circulation. This includes more than 800 million 50p coins featuring Britannia.

The removal of Britannia from the 50p coins prompted a handful of MPs to ask the Government to intervene earlier this year.

When the new coins are introduced this summer it will not be the first time the Britannia has not appeared on the 50p piece. For example last year the 2007 50p featured a commemorative design to mark the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Cross.

No change for £2 coin

Andrew Stafford, chief executive of the Royal Mint, said the new designs represented a very important day in history for British coinage.

"It is the only work of art that every member of the general public touches every day, that is important to the nation's way of life," he said.

The new designs will be the first wholesale change to the country's coinage since decimalisation was first introduced in April 1968.

The seven coins that will change are the 1p, 2p, 5p. 20p. 50p and £1. The £2 coin was introduced in 1998 and is not being redesigned.

The front of the coins will continue to bear the same portrait of the Queen, by Ian Rank-Broadley, which has been on coins since 1998.

Sir Christopher Frayling, the chairman of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee said the existing coinage will remain in circulation, including the Britannia 50p."

"There are 806 million Britannias in circulation at the moment. They will remain in circulation. They will see all of us out, until they die a natural death. So whatever happens, Britannia stays around, " he said.

What the buggery? Bloody crappy designs. Neeeext......

Don't mind the £1 so much, but then again, they've already got a number of the designs.

As for the rest, I think a little bit of my soul just died.

It looks like a bloody jigsaw puzzle. Blech.

The one quid coin looks nifty, though.

It's meant to look like a jigsaw, given that design. It kind've looks interesting, but I'd rather they gave us more of the fancy commemorative artworks on fifty-pence and pound coins now, such as the anniversary of the Johnson dictionary, Victoria Cross, Forth Bridge and so on.

It could've been worse.

It could've been this:

And it could've cost eleventy billion dollars.

I didn't even know there was a contest. If I had, I would've entered my own with 40k-esque symbolism and pentagrams all over everything. And it wouldn't have been chosen.

But at least it wouldn't be that olympic logo.

Those are some pretty horrible designs, their even worse than the European crap. Bloody Matthew Dent.

Are these actually going to go into large scale production to supplant the existing coinage or are they just a temporary special edition? Its just another reason to just carry my cards if it is.

They will go alongside the current ones, which are not being pulled out of circulation.

I am undecided on them. I will need the mint to provide me with 200 samples of the £1.00 before I make any further judgement.

As for the Euro's, stick your funny money up your hole. Come back to us when the currency is actually worth something.

If you miss the old designs, you can get them off the Bank of England mint in a special presentation case and made from platinum. Only £10k for the lot.

Still head, neck, shoulders, chest, abdomen and groin above the horrendous crap that increasingly passes for monetary design here in the US.

I'm starting to suspect that the FedGov is trying to push us all into an electronic commerce system, by making the money so damned ugly that no one wants to handle it.

I've always dug the seven-sided coins. Glad to see they're sticking with 'em.

Sorry, those are some of the worst coins I have ever seen, bar none: Absolutely no thought to design symmetry whatsoever. US coins are nowhere remotely as bad.

The set looks cool, but the design fails because it glosses over the fact that coins are individual objects, used discretely or in combinations dictated by price. Thus, the 'art' aspect of the whole idea falls apart when you dig into your pocket to make change.

Really, this Mr. Dent should have asked himself a simple question before he submitted: do jigsaw puzzles look nice when they are all jumbled up and have pieces missing?

Isn't... well, wasn't... there some small movement for the UK to adopt the US dollar?

There's a small movement for everyone to adopt the US dollar, Havok. Thank the gods nothing ever came of it.

I think the new coins are beautiful, especially with the off centre design (like the two coins that make up the upper corners). Shame about Britannia, but she's still on a load of coins, hell, I have some of them.

Those pieces of shit were the winning entries? Either the judges were a bunch of artless retards with no sense of aesthetics (because we can really see the shield when the coins are jumbled up), or all the other entries were just as bad or worse. Either possibility is not good.

Those aren't horrible. They just waste too much space.

I really dislike coins that look like someone took something they did in the computer and then put it through an embossed filter in something like photo shop. They tend to look pretty crapy and apparently it's very easy for the current mints to make coins with those sorts of designs on them.

Some of the horrible new US coins look like that and some of the coins posted at the top of this thread look like that was done to them too.

I didn't know that we even had new coins, except for every so often when some dumbass tries to bring back the $1 coin.

And I, for one, happen to like the way US currency looks. :o

I don't like the new nickels, or any of the new coins where they try to put the person's head in some odd 3/4 or 2/3rds profile. They just don't look good.

I can't say I mind the various state quarters.

The Sacajowea dollar isn't horrible. The Susan B. Anthony dollar had a better engraving on the heads side but the "golden dollar" has a more distinct look and weight to it.
