I curse rarely. Usually only if I'm quoting something, get REALLY pissed (like when I found out I didn't have a 4.0 GPA any more), or hurt myself (like shattering a fingernail playing foosball). Usually I curse in French, since most people don't know French that well and I can get away with it .

I guess not. But seriously, I have actually challenged some of these people to come out and explain how swearing harms people, and they always go circular on me.

Me: "Why do you think that swearing harms people?"

Them: "It harms them because they shouldn't have to hear those kinds of hurtful things."

Me: "Isn't 'hurt' just another word for 'harm'? Again, why do you think it harms people?"

Them: "Think of the children."

Me: "OK, why do you think it harms children?"

Them: "Children have a right not to be forced to hear those kinds of things."

Them: "Because swearing is bad for children to hear."

I don't swear much because I think curse words should be used when you REALLY want to convey an emotion, namely anger. My friends can easily tell when I'm getting pissed, because my sentences are suddenly full of cursing.

Oh, I agree that they should be used sparingly. To me, they're like exclamation points. If you use one after every sentence it loses its meaning, but that doesn't mean it's wrong, harmful, or destructive in any way.

Swear words are harmful only in how people perceive them. Certain words which are swearing here are perfectly normal in other cultures (and vice versa). However, the impact of those words is lessened by overusage. It's gotten to the point where I don't even blink at DW using curse words (as an example), but when one of my friends does, I listen more because it's so rare coming from them.

One of the funniest incidents with swearing involved my current GF when we were doing a group work project in high school. She was the token female in our group, and us guys were cracking jokes and being total goofs when we were suppose to be working. After about 10 minutes of jokes and not getting any work done, she lost it and let loose with a string of cusswords, and then she apologized for it. I believe her exact words were "Oh my god I can't believe I just said that, I'm so sorry I didn't mean it, you guys aren't assholes but like arggh...geez, I'm sorry, nevermind". We then spent the next 10 seconds staring at each other thinking "what the hell just happened?" and then we actually started getting some work done. To this day it's the only time I've heard someone apologize for swearing.

Quite honestly it is all in the intent. Weather I call you a fuckhead or a doodyhead, my intent is that you are acting like a retard. Weather I "cuss" or not, the intent is to insult you so the actual word is not as important as the emotion behind it.

Cusswords are becoming frequent enough that elementary school kids use them profusely. Soon it'll become normal colloquial grammar, me thinks, and slip out of taboo status.

If my old university study partner shows up on my doorstep one day, I just know he'll say "Mike, you old bastard, how are you doing?" This is not insulting. On the other hand, a cleanly worded statement like "I find your conduct morally reprehensible and your character sorely lacking, and I think the world would be better off without your input" is definitely insulting despite being free of those dirty, evil cuss-words.
