"Rose" was a solid episode that established S1 but it had a couple of silly moments, "New Earth" was slightly so-so despite the big budget (though had a good ending), "Smith & Jones" was the first genuinely strong opening episode (but Freema's Martha character was sabotaged soon after that), but "Partners in Crime" is the strongest season opener so far and has laid down a potentially strong story arc with Rose (seeing her fleetingly pouting for a few seconds, then vanishing, was a real "WTF!" moment). I just pray to Satan that RTD doesn't use the semi-reset button yet again and that Helen Raynor doesn't drop the ball with Sontaran two parter like she did with that pigmen-tommy-gun-lasers-penis-octopus holocaust last year, other than that I have confidence with this season will be better than Seasons Two and Three.Stark wrote:5s of Billie Piper out-acting a whole season of Freema was almost worth the price of admission by itself. Even I can't judge the series yet, since all the first eps have been pretty bad, but it wasn't terrible.

The person who wrote the excreable Dalek mess in season three is responsible for handling the Sontarans this time round? Err, well, I guess that could turn out alright. The Daleks in Manhattan two parter was generally bad, but it had a couple of genuinely good moments, like when Dalek Caan got real character development. If we're lucky, she'll manage to stretch out something good over two episodes, as opposed to dumping something good into a pile of rubbish.
If we're lucky.

The Sontaran two-parter doesn't concern me so much as the finale, which I expect is a two-parter rather than a three-parter this time. If they do another Earth-is-invaded-but-the-Doctor-hits-the-reset-switch, then I'm going to go on a violent rampage.
It's great that the Daleks tried and failed, then the Cybermen and the Daleks tried (again) and failed (again) and then The Master tried and failed, but at least "won" in that he got somewhere for 12 months before the reset button was hit going from the excellent "Utopia" to the mediocre finale episode.
Am I going to add the Sontarans trying and then failing for this year?

So, will Rose be the "runner" this year?

I've heard Martha's going to be back in it at some point too, and maybe Chris Ecclestone's doctor. Will have to wait and see.
The episode was okay, I hope it won't go the way of the last series and have me getting bored and not bothering to watch it. I like the Adipose, hopefully, the Walkers of Sigma 957 will return to make another appearance. Seriously, their ship was almost identical to the Walker ship, I'm surprised nobody's been sued yet.

If the S4 finale isn't Daleks FUCKING AGAIN GRR, I'll eat my hat. If it's the Sontarans, it'll be standards hackneys self-spoofing Davis silliness, but at least it won't be FUCKING DALEKS AGAIN, which is -20 stupid right there.Admiral Valdemar wrote:The Sontaran two-parter doesn't concern me so much as the finale, which I expect is a two-parter rather than a three-parter this time. On a totally unrelated and superficial note, what's the general feeling on the new themetune? I'm not sure about it yet...

They've actually changed it again since Voyage of The Shining Tooth. I actually quite like the changes adds a nice tempo to it.Lord Woodlouse wrote:On a totally unrelated and superficial note, what's the general feeling on the new themetune? I'm not sure about it yet...

Unsurprisingly, I hate it. It'll soon end up on the Wall of Stupid Doctor Who Themes. As it's primary offence, it fucks up the opening of the theme and leaves the rest relatively alone.
I liked the Time Crash one, the S3 one + 5th Doctor 80s-style synth stings. The 5th Doctor theme was complete balls, so this was fitting.

Oh man, I just checked it out and it sounds pretty terrible. I always thought the new show's theme was pretty good (though put a little too much emphasis on adventure! over the tune's inherent mysterious element). Now they've turned it into noise, adding so many layers that it ends up blending together into a mush.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

I like the new theme. Not as much as the old one, but I don't think it's so bad, either.
As for the episode, I thought it was a good start. Especially liked the first minutes, with Donna and the Doctor being so close, but not seeing each other.
Didn't like Rose so much. I think it could very well have done without her...

I don't mind the new theme at all. Many of the older ones were distorted up the wazoo and you can still easily make out the melody, so all's well.
As for Rose, I think it's one of those things that either going to be absolutely brilliant if written well, or just plain embarrassing. And if last year's Doctor Jesus is anything to go by...

I'd say Steven Spielberg would more likely phone up his lawyers than J. Michael Straczynski (who would be sued as well) since the Adipose saucer blatantly resemebles the Grey saucer from Close Encounters of the Third Kind:Zuul wrote:I like the Adipose, hopefully, the Walkers of Sigma 957 will return to make another appearance. And while the new theme tune could be a lot more mediocre, I'd much rather they used this fan made adaptation instead. It sounds a little too cluttered and slow, but is far more haunting and mysterious than any of the Murray Gold tunes used so-far (even though the variations of the first score was great on hindsight).

What he, Stark and Spanky said. Sorry, but I preferred the previous theme for Neo Who.Chardok wrote:Personal opinion? Total rubbish. Its resemblence to that was probably intentional, but minor in comparison, that's just a dark, lit saucer. The walker ship and the adipose ship both had rotating circular sections along the outside of the hull, covered in lots of stuck out masts, with moving lights in the middle of the larger object, around a central structure that reached outwards from the backing disc. Aside from the lightning and the hyperspace effects, the walker vessel and the adipose one were practically interchangeable.Big Orange wrote:I'd say Steven Spielberg would more likely phone up his lawyers than J. As for the new theme tune, it's okay, but I think the percussion detracts from the electronic minimalism that I associate with the theme. I think they should just use the Orbital cover, personally.
