"Abscence makes the heart go yonder" is more appropo.
"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance--that principle is contempt prior to investigation." -Herbert Spencer

"Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain." - Schiller, Die Jungfrau von Orleans, III vi.

"Ignorance is bliss."

Wrong. Ignorance is how fundies are created, and how we end up with idiots.

Actually, 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' does work with family members who aren't your spouse who get on your nerves if they are around you too long.

Igorance IS Bliss, why do you think that people at Stardestroyer.net BBS always have stu to bitch about (stupid trekkies, etc..) when the only important decision a lot fo the airheads my my school make is "Should I wear underwear today?"

Its amazing they don't drow in their Cheerios. Oh wait, thats why they invented breakfast bars, to keep Souther n Californians from drowning in cereal.

(SEGUE)

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"

If breakfast is so damn important then tell me why no matter how much or how little I eat in the morning I still demand food at noon. Lunch is the most important meal of the day, for it shapes your entire day afterwards
"If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little."
-George Carlin (1937-2008)

"Have some of you Americans actually seen Football? Of course there are 0-0 draws but that doesn't make them any less exciting."
-Dr Roberts, with quite possibly the dumbest thing ever said in 10 years of SDNet.

No, that was the "let them eat cake!" quote IIRC.

Kudos was to the person telling whoever said it in the first place to fuck off, btw. :)

Robert Oppenhiemer for not even getting the quote right.

If the radiance of a thousand suns
Were to burst at once into the sky
That would be like the splendor of the Mighty one ...
I am become Death,
The shatterer of Worlds.
-The Bhagavad-Gita

"...now I am become Death [Shiva], the destroyer of worlds..."

I don't know, but isn't it depending on the translation of the original piece? I mean destroyer and shatterer are close enough...

I seem to remember the nietchse one being different originally. Something like "what doesn't kill strengthens our soul" or some crap like that. It got fucked up over the years, like "cheap at half the price" (saying for good value - if it was cheap at TWICE the price it might make sense), and the good old Yankism "I could care less" when what they actually mean is they couldn't care less

"640k Should Be Enough for Anybody."
- Bill Gates
The most famous quote taken out of context by computer people
Its one of the longest running bad bits of logic in the computer industry, See if you quote the previous line Gates starts off by say

"Well with our OS today 640k should be enough for anybody" refencing the fact that the OS at the time could not handle more than 650k

Not a quote, but a paraphrase from William Thompson, Lord Kelvin telling his students in the late 1890s not to pursue a career in physics because there was nothing left to discover, all that's left were to tie down loose ends.

From a college supper (not dinner, but a nice nighttime snack session at 10pm a few nights a week)...

Stupid fucking senior tutor: "Now if you all just wait, then you can get in and have your cake?"

Smart arse: "But, Graeme - will you let us eat it too?"

Needless to say, that senior tutor had never really held the respect of anybody.

I know that it means you can't have two opposite things at once, or some such.

Small problem: it's your fucking cake. The saying says so. What good is a cake eat you can't eat?

It's nonsense.

Of course I don't. Do you? Don't keep me in suspense, because quite frankly it's a fucked saying until I'm told otherwise :)
I believe so. The way I understand it, once you eat your cake you no longer have it. If you want to have your cake and eat it too, you want to be able to eat it, and still have more to eat, and more after that. Basically, you don't want to accept the consequences of your initial action.

Crap. As you can see, I edited, because though I did know what it's said in RESPONSE to, the way it's worded is idiocy.

If it was, you want to KEEP your cake and eat it too, then it might make a smidgen more sense.

Now, perhaps. I'm sure it made perfect sense where and when it was coined.

phongn wrote:Chuck, didn't you write up a big list of things like this ?
Pretty similar, I guess.

"Set your own moral compass, but at least try to be considerate to those
around you and maybe consider that six billion other people on the planet
might actually have something to teach your self-centered ass."
"Follow your dreams, but make sure to keep one foot grounded in reality so
you don't wind up living in a refrigerator box and having to pick lice out
of your pubic hair."
"Don't give in to what others demand of you, but try to be reasonable and
meet people half way once in a while to show you're not a self-obsessed
prick."
"Live life day to day, but remember that one of those days the landlord will
be asking for his f*cking money."
"Break the rules, but only those rules we all know should really be broken,
not the important ones like not killing people or disposing of car batteries
improperly."
"Don't back down... unless, of course, your stupid ass is wrong. Then back
the f*ck down already."
"Live life on your terms, so long as your ass is at work on time. Otherwise
you'll find yourself living in a one bedroom apartment with two other guys
who have more back hair then a yeti and sell plasma for a living."
And my final piece of advice:
"Just do your best and hope it all doesn't go to shit."
Chuck

How about "Money is the root of all evil."

The Quote is actually, "The Love of Money is the Root of all Evil." I'll try to find which verse that is.

I think the Amish started saying it was money only, but they believe that about Cars, Computers, Electricity, and Buttons, so I wouldn't write too much into it.

"It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all".

Shakespeare was brilliant when it came to prose, and he was a master at capturing the really DEPRAVED and BRUTAL elements of human nature** but he was way off on that one. To quote from K from MiB when offered the same advice: "Try it". "Ignorance is bliss" is a good counter-cliche to that one.

Being in love is grand, but the heartache that accompanies love lost is far worse than the neutrality of not being in love. Course, we all know that people get lonely and depressed when they 'can't find someone', but I am adamant in my belief that those people just don't have a sufficiently developed sense of self worth, not that they are maligned by fate.

**Why is Romeo and Juliet a love story? It is an unmerciful tale of two teenage DRAMA-QUEEN IDIOTS with inflated egos who kill themselves because the world won't do what they want. Play me a fucking violin.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.
