That's less than what I'd pay to go to uni, and about the same amount of time.

Because as I said - it only takes me 5-10 minutes to get to work via car. For me the convienece factor is worth it. It doesn't help the case of public transit that It literally costs me less to drive than to take the bus. The fact that I don't like the people that rid the bus (unsanitary and inconsiderate) puts driving over the edge.

"Unsanitary and inconsiderate"? Occasionally you get a smelly one, to be sure, but aren't you typecasting? I ride the goddamned bus, and I bathe twice a day. We take the bus downtown all the time; I could get to Olympic College in ten minutes by car, but I'm willing to take the thirty minutes by bus, including transfer, one because gas prices are hideous and two over parking, but also out of a recognition that cars are undrivable soon enough.

You had better get to work on getting bus service in your area improved, then, because within another couple of years the $10.00 a gallon gasoline you can expect is going to drive you out of your precious dick mobile and back into the crowd with all the "Smelly" people on the bus.

See what I said before? Strongly encouraging (in some cases, you could practically call it mandating) personal auto transportation and encouraging (again, in many cases, considering the urban alternative, mandating) low density remote-suburban and exurban development has not only placed us at great peril and risk, but underlined all the essential classism of American culture and society. The urban, commuting, renting class is considered to be "disgusting" and basically shit-on by the state. Of course, the reason these areas and that group deteriorated was because the government subsidized white flight which simply led to even further financial and political divestment from urban communities and public infrastructure.

I also am amused by how openly most Middle America suburbanites display their fear and loathing for the poor and urban American class. I like how apparently America is supposed to be grand and this and that, but stuffy racist, classist, inconsiderate assholes get a monopoly on saying what America is, and are free to shit on the future to prop up that feel-good illusion.

Heaven forbid anyone, like Obama or otherwise, stand there and make us face facts - those homeless, mud babies, Hispanic kids born here who can't speak English - they are all Americans just the same as a Son or Daughter of the American Revolution, and its time to stop shitting where we eat.

As has been repeatedly said, the energy crisis isn't a problem stemming from a lack of energy or even technology. It is a fault with our psychology and social mindset especially, that has led us to this precipice. If anything, the wanton drilling for cheap oil becoming successful is the last thing you need in this situation. It will only further delude the masses into thinking everything is fine and their lifestyles are fully justified.

The corollary is that extremely fast rising prices will get us nowhere but chaos too. We need someone to get the people, doubly so in the US, to address their energy use and trim the fat. The sooner consumption for consumption's sake is dealt with, the better, and we all know how powerful the growth paradigm is. It is woven in the fabric of our very civilisation, after all.

The only form of mass transit that is truly feasible is heavy rail. All others suck. I like constant 80 MPH speeds and them not getting in my way; like buses do all the time and essentially block off a lane as they're constantly slowing down and stopping to pick people up.

If more people used buses than congestion and obstruction wouldn't be an issue; a bus can handle what, 40 passengers? Even if only 5 of those were going to be one-driver, one-SUV assholes, its well worth the exchange in terms of pavement clogged. I'll give you a clue how many near-accidents I've gotten in or how much time wasted over buses versus view-obstructing SUVs trying to maneuver like a Mini Cooper or just filling up space so one soccer mom with a latte can get to the department store looking fashionable.

Heavy electric rail is good. But we need something that goes more local than that, which is why we will need trams or buses all the same. For dedicated freight and long distance express travel, the railway is the best route. When you reach a city, then you need to have something that does more than one or two stops at major public areas, and so buses should come in, be they electric or fuel-cell drives or flywheel or combined electric turbines.

You don't live in the northern suburbs of Dayton Ohio, and the route I have to take takes me past several housing projects filled with morons who don't shower, much less bathe. When I was taking the bus to school, I would deal with it, but It would make me sick. The fact that a good 40% of the time there would be people playing music or talking on a cell phone so loudly that while they were at the very back of the bus, and I was at the front, I would still swear that they were standing next to me, so clear I could hear them.

That's a difference Duchess - It would take me an hour and a half, and two bus transfers to make my trip by bus, but only 5-10 minutes by car. If it was a half an hour, or even 45 minutes I would do it, but 9-18 times as long just isn't feasible for me.

Three Points Duchess - I do go to every meeting dealing with public transit that I can, and two - I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke - I literally have thrown-up on people who have just finished smoking at work (they don't come near me after getting off a smoke break anymore). Guess what the majority of the smell I smell on the bus is? And Three - I drive a sedan (used 2000 Olds Intrigue).
