The problem originates from the confusion over the word Tsela, which as Omeganian correctly states, can mean either rib or side/line of a shape. Which interpertation you go with today(in Judaism) depends on the commentry you prefer, or simply going with the stock Jewish answer to anything in Genesis "it's a parable".
