Hooray second episode is out! That only took four months, but hey.

So I took some screencaps of some interesting things in this episode.

Mikhail's VF-25 with sniper rifle.

Search and rescue Detroids. They sorta looked like the Destroid Cheyenne from Macross Zero.

Princess Alto, the early years.

Also we get to see how a New Macross class deals with a breach in the City section's dome. There's some kind of liquid metal style seal. Props to this episode for having Fire Bomber's Totsugeki LOVE HEART playing on the radio in Ozuma's sweet space Honda.

So spoil it for me... How does Alto prevail in regards to the events at the end of the first episode?

Does one need to have seen M0 or M7 to watch MF?

Rambling
Macross is one of my (very few) totally guilt-free anime pleasures (AnimEigo's SDF:M DVD box set sits on my shelf next to an import of the DYRL DVD and the two-disc M+ set; a 2012 VHS sits on the shelf in my parents' house, and I'm planning to get ADV's SDF:M DVD sets in the near future), but I've had a hard as hell time tracking down M7. I recently got ahold of M0, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Why would you want ADV's set? It's almost exactly the same as the Animeigo set.

Right now the only thing that is from Macross 7 and Zero are some in jokes. However, they may be moving towards stronger ties with M0 if some of my hunches are correct. I must caution you that if you watch M0, please skim or skip episode 4 and you'll have a much better experience with it.

It was my understanding that the picture transfer is better.

I'm also trying to introduce my girlfriend to Macross, and I'm not sure she has the patience to watch 36 subtitled episodes; the ADV ones have what appears to be the best (and only?) dub for the series.

Of course, like any good purist, I prefer the subtitled versions. ;)

Eh, I'll happily take the good with the bad. But at least now I'll know to squint a bit harder when episode 4 comes around. ;)

I've heard it was the same quality. Weird. Of course, nothing is gonna touch the eventual HD release in Japan.

The only other proper English dub for the series was one tape Harmony Gold released way back before they decided to fuck it all up. And even then they decided Hikaru should be "Rick Yamada." I guess you can enjoy Mari Ijima's horrible attempts at English voice acting and the rest of the cast's inability to pronounce the word "Macross." Also all new GI Joe sound effects in the 5.1 mix.

Watch out for the flying bird fish logs.

Speaking of DVDs, Macross Frontier is going to be onDVD and Blu-Ray and we're going to get a Yak Deculture edition of the first episode which will contain everything from the Deculture edition and the broadcast edition.

I never knew it was this bad.

Macross is hard to bring into the modern world sound wise. The whole thing was recorded in mono way back in 1982.

Whacha talkin' bout Skipper?

You know, those Hong Kong dubbers who did DYRL got it right. And in the ADV dub, Mari Ijima is the only one who could pronounce anything correctly.

I have to confess, my first exposure to Macross was Clash of the Bionoids. ;) I have a VHS of the full DYRL dub at my parents' house, too.

So is it worth watching so far? I'm on a huge Macross kick so I'd like to know what parts of the franchise are worth going for.

Crummy dubbing is pretty much the standard course for ADV. What bothers me more are the "GI Joe sound effects," as you phrased them.

It's really annoying to watch something like that, hearing oddly characteristic sound effects like "Tch-ch-ch-ch-chooo!" and "that one bouncing metallic ricochet" you know shouldn't be there and clearly don't belong.

And what the hell's up with the Zentradi voices not being echoed or distorted? :(

It's like looking into the future... a future filled with crap. Generic, badly voiced, recycled crap. But with '80s anime flair.

I dunno, but Kamjin saying, "HAVE AT THEM!" was pretty funny. And what's with Hikaru's lisp? It sounds like he has asthma or something.

I like how Kamjin's VA is trying a little too hard to sound like an obvious villain, compared to the original's general badass jerkery.
And what's with Hikaru's lisp? It sounds like he has asthma or something.
Half of everyone sounds like either some kind of hick or buffoon, really.

Why would they even do that? Doesn't that just make more work for them?

Also, I just looked up some Robotech videos on Youtube, having not seen them before... did... did Robotech actually get the voice echo down better than the ADV dub?
