"World peace" hitcher found murdered in Turkey

Post by Vympel »

Sick
'World peace' hitcher is murdered

An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey.

The naked body of Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, known as Pippa Bacca, was found in bushes near the city of Gebze on Friday.

She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.

Turkish police say they have detained a man in connection with the killing.

Reports say the man led the police to the body.

Autopsy

Ms di Marineo was hitch-hiking from Milan to Lebanon with a fellow artist on their "Brides on Tour" project.

They had separated in Istanbul, planning to reunite in Beirut.

Ms di Marineo was last seen on 31 March in Gebze.

An Italian embassy official told the Associated Press news agency police tracked the man when he put a new SIM card into Ms di Marineo's mobile phone.

Local media identified the suspect only by the initials MK and said he had a previous conviction for theft.

Ms di Marineo's sister, who had gone to Turkey to look for her, identified the body. An autopsy is being conducted in Istanbul.

"Her travels were for an artistic performance and to give a message of peace and of trust, but not everyone deserves trust," another sister, Maria, told the Italian news agency, Ansa.

This is the guy they want to use to win over "young people?" Are they completely daft? I'd rather vote for a pile of shit than a Jesus freak social regressive.
Here's hoping that his political career goes down in flames and, hopefully, a hilarious gay sex scandal.

I don't know. It seems like an incredibly naive and stupid idea. It is too bad she got killed, but really, she should have known better.
There is a reason why parents tell their kids not to talk to strangers. No matter how many nice and loving ones you meet, there is ALWAYS going to be that one.

Indeed. I wanted to post something of the sort earlier but didn't want to come off sounding like a cold hearted prick. Not saying she deserves to be murdered, yet there is something to be said about risk assessment.

So, if I'm ever in Turkey and find a corpse I *shouldn't* notify the police? :wtf:

He misread the article.

He read:
Turkish police say they have detained a man in connection with the killing.

Reports say the man led the police to the body.
and thought that the man led the police to the body before he was arrested. Actually, it later states that he was arrested because he stole her phone, meaning that he led the police to the body after he was arrested.

Not surprising. Sad, but entirely predictable. The idea ofa lone woman hitchhiking through a place like Turkey and the rest of the Middle East is one of the stupidest I've heard in a long time for a lot of reasons. Still a shame. :(

It's always sad to see hikers die because of the risks connected with that way of travelling :( i hiked myself. I use rail mostly now, because I feel that my life's invaluable to someone I love too.

Russia is actually huge on hiking, so many hikers here and hiker clubs, communities and internet websites. Despite Russia becoming a very high risk environment, those hiker guys just like froze in time from the 1980s.. :(

No, if you're in Turkey don't think they can't track down phones just because they're not a developed country.
An Italian embassy official told the Associated Press news agency police tracked the man when he put a new SIM card into Ms di Marineo's mobile phone.
The guy who killed her took her phone, and had his ass nailed when he tried to use it. He probably figures he's fucked so decided to cooperate with authorities as much as possible.

It´s probably pretty safe to hike in Turkey. I doubt that a high percentage of people who hike there or similar areas get killed or have any problems. This was probably just bad luck and was reported by the media because it was an ironic case and interesting for readers. There´s no story behind hikers who don´t get into any trouble on their travels and they´re the majority.

I think her key fuck-up was not hitch hiking but rather hitch hiking alone while wearing a wedding dress. It seems to me that going out of your way to bring attention to yourself is more likely to attract unsavoury characters. Especially considering that a lot of nice people who might have been helpful to her if she was wearing something normal, instead probably passed her by while muttering "weirdo" because of the dress.

A hitchhiker was killed and you think it's some kind of special event? I could go anywhere and say 'I trust in the local people', but that doesn't magically protect me from murderers who want to steal my phone.

Apparently someone thinks that kind of mind-set buys them leverage. I find you live longer by underestimating human empathy, rather than the opposite.

I live in a national park where nature has a way of reminding people that unlike civilization, natural selection is still enforced. Still a sad thing. However we tend to have a few dead/lost hikers every year in Yosemite, though murders seem to be very rare: 5 murders and 2 scuicides in the 13 years I've been here.

5 murders in Yosemite? Really? I can imagine the suicides... a nice beautiful place to die and all, but what are the murders about?

Again, I can almost understand why the centrist fucktards behind South Park hate lefties so much when I read stuff like this. A senseless waste of life like this, even a voluntary one conducted by a private citizen, accomplishes nothing and would have probably been less likely to happen if sentiments like "give peace a chance/all you need is love" had never caught on.

Well, if you treat people like they're worth a crap, I find, makes them much nicer to you.

But, there is always a chance, I suppose.
