To help people weather the downturn immediately, McCain was calling for Congress to institute a "gas-tax holiday" by suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He also renewed his call for the United States to stop adding to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and thus lessen to some extent the worldwide demand for oil.
Combined, he said, the two proposals would reduce gas prices, which would have a trickle-down effect and "help to spread relief across the American economy."

Also, $2.35? Christ, that's a drop in the bucket. Not worth it, I think.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
This is idiotic on McCain's part. 60% of the revenue from gasoline taxes go to infrastructure and highway maintenance, which means that if you slashed them for a time, you are simply losing more money for infrastructure.
But in addition, isn't this supposed to be John McCain, Mr. I'm-A-Conservative-But-Concerned-About-Global-Warming? I guess he didn't realize that trying to make it cheaper and easier for fuel to be consumed in order to gain a hypothetical economic boost (key word being hypothetical) is a little contradictory to that.

Frankly, no matter how much you kick and scream, you're going to get a recession. The US government should stop trying to stop a massive tsunami by using a bucket and a hand-pump while screaming obscenities.

Cutting services and privatizing those which can't be cut such that everyone but the rich get screwed.
On topic. Hah! So the US wants to use the China plan and make petro cheap(er) for the people. It should be fun to watch the fuel shortages in the US this summer if the plan goes through, and that's only the beginning of the bad stuff.

If McCain was fucking serious about the budget, he wouldn't be proposing this:
Require more affluent people — couples making more than $160,000 — enrolled in Medicare to pay a higher premium for their prescription drugs than less-wealthy people.
Unless the US adopts UHC, couples with a $160k income have no goddamned business having their prescription drugs paid for by Medicare.
I support a UHC plan, but until we get one, the idea of the Feds paying for health care/drugs for the wealthy elderly just pisses me off.
