To be honest, I wasn't really thinking about performance. The old board was failing, and getting to the point that if I stopped it, I really didn't know if I could boot it up again. I had to replace it just to get something that would reliably work.
However, the new MB does seem noticeably snappier, which is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately, the OS reinstall might have introduced some configuration issues; I'm still not entirely sure that mySQL is running optimally.
Need new MB for SD.Net server

With what kind of cooling setup? The cooling system has a significant impact, but temps between 45 and 60 degrees are not out of the ordinary with the standard heat sinks. If you have something more exotic, it can be more efficient but can also be a bigger pain in the ass.Sriad wrote:Just a note on the downtime notes you left; my room mate, who knows a thing or two more than I do about computers, assured me that any processor running at 60C should raise significant concern if you haven't been able to bring it down yet.

Why is it so goddamned hard to get little assholes like you to admit it when you fuck up? Is it pride? What gives you the right to have any pride?

Good point; you did remember to put the thermal grease in didn't you DW? Or remove the plastic film if it was pre-applied? Forgetting the thermal grease can easily bump temps by 10 degrees or more.Sriad wrote:Just a note on the downtime notes you left; my room mate, who knows a thing or two more than I do about computers, assured me that any processor running at 60C should raise significant concern if you haven't been able to bring it down yet.
Putting too much of it will have the same effect. I rechecked some things and the 60 degrees does seem too high, just as Sriad said. So my memory is faulty and the above post of mine as well as the advice I gave in an email should be ignored.Starglider wrote:Good point; you did remember to put the thermal grease in didn't you DW? I'm running a E6600 dual core processor and with the standard heat sink it's just 45 C after hours of operation. My case has excellent air cooling capabilities, though. The case can have quite a bit of effect. But when I first installed the processor, it cranked the heat to 75 C because of excessive thermal paste (the stuff that came with the processor was complete shit). So what I suggest is taking the server offline, removing the processor and scraping off all the preapplied thermal paste. It's likely to be the too thick, too stiff shit. Then add a very thin film of more malleable and fluid thermal paste and reinstall the processor. That's what I did with my machine. Been around 45 - 50 C ever since.
