Mother, Daughter Charged With Attacking Teacher

ATLANTA -- A high school teacher tells WSB-TV Channel 2 she was brutally attacked in her classroom by one of her students and the girl's mother.

Police charged Georgia Thornton, 44, and her 17-year-old daughter Sequita with attacking Felecia Williams, a teacher at Southside High School on February 28. The official charges against the mother include battery on a school teacher, disrupting a public school, criminal trespass and theft by taking in connection with the alleged attack on teacher.

Sequita Thornton was charged with battery on a teacher and disrupting a public school.

Williams told WSB-TV Channel 2 that the teenager was failing her TV Production class. The teacher claims Georgia Thornton visited the school to complain about the girl's treatment and attacked her during the meeting, knocking her to the ground, kicking and punching her and pulling her hair. Williams claims Sequita Thornton joined the attack.

“And then she threw the book back and just took me like this and then started flinging me everywhere,” said Williams.

Williams said eventually two of her students stepped in and stopped the attack.

“It was so scary and it took administration over ten minutes to come to my classroom to assist me,” said Williams.

Williams said she is afraid to return to the classroom once her injuries have healed. Sequita Thornton has been allowed to attend classes again.

Williams said she is unhappy to now be on workers comp and she’s only receiving two-thirds of her salary. She also told Channel 2 she wasn’t offered counseling and the school hasn’t responded to her request for a transfer.

Officials for the Atlanta Public School System said attacks on teachers are rare and they are investigating the attack on Williams. School system spokesperson Joe Manguno said they are doing everything they can to help Williams through this period. He said the safety and security of students and staff are very important to the district.

Seriously, what the fuck does it take to get expelled from an Atlanta high school, if assault and battery on a teacher don't cut it?

As if battery becomes more illegal because you do it to a teacher. ...Wha? And, although I'm sure it makes sense in technical terms, 'theft by taking' is possibly the most redundant phrase I've heard recently.

Seriously, WTF? Last time I heard of an attack on a teacher in my area, the kid sat in lockup for a day, put into counseling, forced to do community service, and was expelled from the entire district.

Something tells me that these two have no future earnings, unless you count welfare. They don't exactly strike me as members of the "net contributor" portion of society.

Ahh, more evidence for my postulation that the level of stupidity contained within the name of the child is directly proportional to the stupidity of the parent.

Theory 2, as an extrapolation of the above, will include evidence for propensity to use violence to solve problems and, by proxy, the likelihood of prison time for both child(ren) and parent(s).

I've taken 'em.

I've taught 'em.

I work in tv (as infrequently as possible) professionally.

Aside from not bothering to show up, I can't fathom how one fails at this sort of thing.

Not only was I thinking it, but I've seen it happen personally. This one black girl in my band class went berserk one day, and before I lucked out and knocked her to the floor (and then two trombone players wrestled her out into the hallway and locked the door on her) she'd managed to nearly dislocate my band director's shoulder. The official school rules say that, at a very minimum, assaulting a teacher (which she did) has an automatic ten day out of school suspension. She had in-school suspension for three days and was back in classes after that.

None of the administration even bothered to ask me or anybody in band what had happened, which is just as well. They probably would have kicked ME out of school instead for hitting her.

Fortunately she DID act a lot nicer after that. I suggest having me go punch Sequita to the ground. If you don't tell her that I'm half white, they won't call it racist.

The most surprising part to me about the story is that her mother was actually in her forties. That would imply that she was over 20 when she had this child.

Georgia sucks. That's why I left.

Unfortunately, the way workman's comp is run she'd lose the 2/3 she's currently receiving and be expected to pay back the money. When my dad was on workman's comp for some really heinous shit that happened to him while he was a letter carrier they cut money out of his payout because he was employed by a company that helped out with the 2002 Winter Olympics.

I'm honestly half surprised the teacher's getting as much as she is. Based on my family's experience, workman's comp doesn't want to help anyone.

This might not be her firstborn. This might be the 'baby' of the litter.
(as someone who's seen welfare moms in their mid-20s with 3-5 kids by as many fathers, I can say that.)

I meant, garnish the mother's and daughter's welfare payments, assuming they collect welfare, which somehow does not seem totally out of the realm of possibility, here.

She is facing criminal charges...expulsion should be a minimum, but that's not exactly "getting away with it".
