Ben Stein's Expelled documentary

Post by Meest »

Did anyone catch Ben Stein on Craig Ferguson's late show last night? He has this documentary that irks me to no end. It supposedly debunks Darwinism by offering some unknown "design" concept. I found him really dishonest when Craig finally got him to slip up and say it's Pro-God. He kept saying we love Darwin but he doesn't explain everything. Then he got into typical Republican mode saying "Don't fire people because they say the planets do stay in their orbits because of something other than Darwinism." It didn't make sense at all, here are some more quotes.
"Darwinism doesn't explain how the planets stay in their orbits."
Who the hell who claims that? And how is that related to Darwinism?
He just really pisses me off trying to be the "smart" voice for Creationists and the like. Here's a link to some of his ranting, still trying to find the late show clip. Ben Stein is stupid

EDIT, seems to be a few threads on this, not sure if it opens new discussion.

I dunno, but I thank you for the link. Provided a fair amount of amusement since I'm going back and looking at the older stuff.

I believe the Principal from Billy Madison said it best when he said Mr. Stein, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I'd say people who do not know of the existence of biology and physics. This is the group of people who think that "science" is done by "scientists" and that's all there is to it; and there's a fuckload of them.

Seriously, I was reading the online comments to a news article the other day about the possibility of global cooling based on work done by a geophysicist and the amount of people flaming "science" or "scientists" was unbelievable. People were actually saying "What else have they mislead us on?" and shit.

Some of us really take for granted even the most basic scientific knowledge.

Gosh, you really have to be one stupid motherfucker to say something like that.

Im wondering whether he did this on purpose (the cheating fuck), or he really believes that Darwinism is some kind of a religion that explains EVERYTHING about the universe in a way religion does (wait, religion actually doesnt explain anything, but that doesn't stop those idiots from thinking otherwise).

This is annoying. The biggest amount of criticism on this topic usually comes from people who know jack shit about it.

Well, that makes sense - for someone who knows more than jack shit about the topic to make themselves a grating nuisance like Mr. Stein has, they would have to be dishonest rather than just stupid. There appear to be far more stupid people than smart but dishonest ones.

As much as I would like to have the power to reach through my monitor and slap the fool, I am hopeful that his comments on that show were so asinine, that viewers would either see this whole thing as a joke, or see him for what he is: a complete intellectual fraud.

Indeed. It appears that not only does he oppose the theory of evolution, but also the theory of gravity.

This whole thing looked hilarious from the moment the movie's description pinned all the world's problems on a vast conspiracy forwarded by BIG SCIENCE. Yes ladies and gentlemen, don't worry about big tobacco or big oil, BIG SCIENCE is the new enemy. It's hi-fucking-larious that he's trying to pass science off as if it some kind of malevolent corporate entity. It's another case of wild Fundies shoe-horning science into something they can understand so they can try to strike it down easier. Plenty of Fundies still treat the whole scientific community as if it's some kind of political party. High School science didn't go very well for Mr. FrankenStein did it?

Oh, Fundies have no problems at all with big corporations. Most of them are actually in bed with corporate America. It all makes sense when you look at their attitude towards global warming. They think the warming is a big conspiracy cooked up by scientists to get more research dollars while casually ignoring the fact that big corporations have orders of magnitude more economic interest in denying warming and that there are plenty of other areas for scientific investigation.

Hell Stein even pitched a book about making money on the same talkshow, why are they always so close to each other. If praising god and doing his will dominates their lives why are they so into corporate money? Guess they think they need all this power to changes laws and force the world to see it like them, just like Jesus intended right?

There was a poll over at the Expelled MySpace page which asked the question whether ID should be taught in the U.S. educational system. The last time I checked, 98.8% had voted that ID shouldn't be taught in schools, but when I went there to check the poll today, it had mysteriously disappeared...

Yeah, thanks to this thread, I've checked out all of them from the "Why do people laugh at Creationists" series. It's some very decent stuff.

As an aside, why is it that sarcasm seems more cutting when it's done with a British accent?

I don't know, I guess we invented it. But Hugh Laurie does it great in an American accent as House. So maybe it's the people, not the voice.

The british as a whole seem to be more practiced as the sly, more biting sarcasm, though it's not exclusive to them.
Part of the problem, I think, is trying to use sarcasm to hit the lowest common denominator, which a poor use of it, IMO.
