I don't know if they're there towards the beginning in SP but in a free mode match I was playing with some friends we found 4 Black Hawks parked at the Heli Tours on the southeast end of Algonquin and 3 on helipads at the north end of the airport.

Or, at the very fucking least, let me restart it from the "surveillance start" point, not from when I leave the briefing and have to drive all the fucking way across the city to get there.

Yeah, what more or less convinced me was I took her out on the first date after rescuing Roman from the lonesharks, she sent me a text message asking if something had come up and if I was "involved with some bad people", on the way back she asked what kept Niko the first time and upon Niko's vague explanation asked if Roman was "involved in any criminal activites".
Or when you take her to a bar and she's not really drunk at all and Niko makes some vague references to all those weird questions she kept asking him.

Hey, Niko Bellic is not Russian. He says so in the game. He's ... Former Yugoslavian. That's the best I got. I have no idea what language he's speaking in the beginning of the game.
He's from somewhere that used to be part of the Soviet Bloc. We aren't meant to find out anything more specific than that, and I think the ambiguity of it has a certain amount of charm.
Roman says in the opening cutscene to Niko's bad English, "Better than my Serbian." He also keeps referencing that he's forgotten the language from speaking English so much.

In reference to Michelle, I shall say absolutely nothing on the topic of whether she's undercover, but I will say that you should wait until you get into Algonquin for anything involving her.

So not having a version of Double Cleff FM is sad. I also really, really loved the music from the original Rise FM. Haven't listened to the "techno" stations enough in IV to judge them though.

Also, they should've gotten "Grand Theft Auto" by Da Shootaz back for this game.

But oh well. I find I'm loving The Journey though. I really hope they'll release a station-by-station soundtrack. I've read Amazon has mp3 downloads, though I haven't checked it out to see if The Journey is well enough represented (and by 'well enough' I mean all of it :D ).

LOL WHUT R TEH SPOLARZ I AM DUMBZ

I'm kinda stunned that there's no mission list that I can find online: I want to determine how far through I am, but it's nigh impossible to do so. The missions have become staggeringly hard (although it's a lot easier to do Death Tunnel when you're not drunk and hide in a single pixel of not-cops space) but I'm curious how 'generous' the 30h thing is.

It seems to me that Niko is a Serb, a veteran of the war in Bosnia, if he's speaking Serbian (I turned on subtitles so I could read the Russian etc in the game). His story doesn't seem like a fit for Kosovo, though it could be.

Michelle is definitely very sus - who expects a young American chick in 2008 to ask about a war that happened in the early mid 90s?

Do they translate on the subtitles?

I haven't gotten very far with her yet (only the bowling "mission" and a couple dates: one for darts and the other at that theater place) but so far Niko's been the one to bring up the war, when it is discussed.

Anyway my read on her is that she's legit, or at least as legit as anyone the protagonist of a GTA game hangs out with... And I don't much care what anyone else in here says, she'll stay that away unless the game tells me otherwise (read: I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and going "Lalalala!" :P ).

I think it speaks to the success of the GTA4 theme that it's so easy to buy into the characters; Michelle is a friendless person from out of town, as adrift on the American Dream as Niko. They don't preach about it (pay attention idiots who made Mass Effect), but the characters in the game all have something to say more or less directly about America, and that is both thematically awesome and sells them as characters. My favourite character is the ex-con who is so institutionalised the real world is now a prison for him and the country has passed him by while he was inside... and in pretty much any other game he'd be eye-rollingly preachy bullshit.

Yup. I don't read Cyrillic :) I didn't turn them on until after the beginning of the game (to understand Mikhail and Dimitri when they were speaking to each other or someone else) but as was stated above Roman refers to Niko's Serbian. Or vice versa, I can't remember what was said only a few pages ago :)

They really are essential, IMO, to understand everything that's going on in some scenes.

I suck at bowling, pool, and darts. I've lost bowling with Michelle, darts with Roman (because I didn't understand wtf the game was talking about "you must end on a double" - who the fuck plays darts? anyway) and pool with Michelle.

Which means I'm not terribly good at anything, actually. I'm not very far into the game of course. I only recently got online.

Anyone gone flying through their own windshield when they crash really hard? Epic fun. :)

From next week I'll be staying at my brother's house for 6 weeks - he's got his own copy of GTA IV - can I transfer my save game over?

Okay...darts.

For an example just focus on the 20. Hit the normal section and you score 20, hit the small part midway in and the score is trebled, the small section at the rim is a double score. You must end the game by hitting a double. Say you have a score of 61 left. Hit a 1, then a 20, then a double 20.

The pool against Roman isn't too bad, I'm terrible at it, but so is he. :)

Bowling, I still can't get the hang of, especially trying to get the achievement for three strikes in a row.

Oh yes...anyone else hit a wall near the sea while on a motorbike and went flying into the water. :)

There's a rather cheap way to get the achievement on how to avoid the cops while on a six star rating for 5 minutes.

I should've known there'd be races. I hate races. Oh well.

So, if I copy my save game data onto a USB stick and take it to my bro's PS3, will it work?

I just stole a helicopter from the helitours and flew over a forbidden zone for five minutes.

And am I the only one wondering if Brucie is secretly gay? He seems to be pushing that 'alpha male look how fucking male I am and bring me womens!' line too hard.. or who knows maybe it's just the bull shark testosterone.

Well I walked on the elevated railroad lines that run under one of the bridges, took a lot of walking though and waited in the tunnel.

I must admit that I was wondering that as well, plus the name Brucie just sounds like a bad stereotype. :)

So I'm guessing Durandal is going to boycott the game now? :D

I got one better, with my flying out the windshield into an unlocked island and getting shredded by the police before I hit the ground. :D

I heard bad things being said about GTA IV's soundtrack, saying how relatively bland and unoutstanding it is, but considering how groundbreaking and astronomical Vice City's radio stations were it is understandable that GTA IV's selections are going to pale in comparison with such a great act to follow, though I found San Andreas' soundtrack didn't feel quite as special as Vice City's soundtrack either (though overall Radio X and K-Dust in addition to some snippets from SF-UF, CSR, K-Rose and Master Sounds were genuinely excellent, making SA's music selection objectively superior to GTA III's charming yet obviously cutprice and limited soundtrack).

The radio stations I will most likely listen to on GTA IV are going to be K190 The Studio, Liberty Rock Radio 97.8, Electro-Choc and The Journey.

Not give too much away, do you think the soundtrack is relatively disappointing like San Adreas' was?

No, it isn't disappointing. You're being a douche listening to these people. What I missed from GTA III was the station which played only tracks from Scarface. I can't recall if it was Flash FM or not, but it's annoyingly not in GTA: VC when that would've been the most apt game to have it in.

On another note, has anyone been watching I'm Rich on CNT? I swear it's the most hilariously true thing that's wrong with America today. It's almost like Charlie Brooker wrote it (note to Rockstar North: get Brooker on-board for the next game).

The game needs less scripted missions (lol the car you're chasing has invincible physics, it just hit a juggernaut and MADE IT FLY INTO THE AIR) and less invincible people (lol you can't shoot Mr X when he's escaping because THEN YOU'D MISS THE EXCITING (read: stupid) CAR/BOAT/CHOPPER/MOON ROCKET CHASE.

Still, story's better than Mass Effect. Mass Effect was story-focused, GTA isn't. Sucks to be them!

Apparently the game considers Jacob my 'best friend' because I assed up his delivery missions a lot and had to take the dude drinking a million times to get the deliveries. Makes the final missions extremely amusing.

Seconded. I hate chase missions, and I hate them more when the guy I'm chasing cheats. If you're in a sedan, and you hit a fire truck at 70 mph, the fire truck should not go flying in the air. And you should be totaled.

Sometimes they hide it with scripting (ie, you never get line of fire or whatever), but in some of the later missions I've been putting multiple sniper shots into people or near-missing them with the RPG-7 and gouts of blood have been flying everywhere... but they still get to their stupid car/boat/rocket cycle for the chase sequence. Fuckers.
