What with all that's going on between Russian and Georgia right now, I just heard an NPR commentator say that "Georgia has been modernizing and improving their military since the 1990s, with Western help, and should enjoy superiority over Russia in the event of hostility."
What?
Whatever upgrades the Georgians may have been able to implement, I find it hard to believe that they could stand for long against Russia.

Georgian Military Strength
I find myself endlessly fascinated by your career - Stark, in a fit of Nerd-Validation, November 3, 2011
Yeah, they don't know what they are talking about. A handful of anti-terror units and UH-60s does not a superior-to-Russia military make.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Maybe they mean LOCAL superiority, i.e., Georgian military forces will be able to hold back Russian ones JUST ENOUGH for NATO reinforcements to arrive. (Needless to say, if those reinforcements DON'T arrive VERY SOON, Russia will steamroll over Georgia.)
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Somehow, I doubt that (1) The Georgina military would be able to repel any signifigant Russian attack for a signifigant amount of time, and (2)NATO would send troops in.Sidewinder wrote:Maybe they mean LOCAL superiority, i.e., Georgian military forces will be able to hold back Russian ones JUST ENOUGH for NATO reinforcements to arrive. Considering George W. Bush wanted Georgia to join NATO, I think we can include the (admittedly remote) possibility that the US might send troops to support Georgia in the event of a Russian attack.

...as long as it happens before November, and McCain isn't the pres-elect.Sidewinder wrote:Considering George W. Bush wanted Georgia to join NATO, I think we can include the (admittedly remote) possibility that the US might send troops to support Georgia in the event of a Russian attack.
If McCain gets in, though, we all know its W Mk-II...
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Russia could overrun half of Georgia because the nations government was even sure it was being invaded. But it’s not very likely to happen at this point, the last thing Russia wants is another full scale war in the Caucuses, victory in which would the double the territory over which it then has to suppress insurgents.
