No, you idiot. They're only comparable if holding irrational and bigotted opinions is equivalent to being born looking a certain hue. God you're fucking stupid. One is irreversable, the other is not. No. One is easily lied about or covered up. Neither is reversible. You can't change the fact that a person was born in Alabama fuck head. The difference is the way the stereotype is "activated" if you will. With a black person it is by sight, with someone from the south it is from communication, either hearing an accent or simply learning where they are from.Illuminatus Primus wrote:No, you idiot. You're a moron. I never said the fact of being born in Alabama intriniscally means you're a redneck bigot and THAT is what is fair to stereotype. I said that the South is a bastion of bigotry and ignorance, and that is borne out of the culture and way people are raised. THAT is what Coffee was whining about, that'd we'd generalize about a region and its cultural baggage. That is totally different from discriminating against people based solely on place of origin or skin hue. We didn't even talk about Southerners as people or individuals, just as a community and a region, the American South is disproportionately full of racists and homophobes and religious lunacy and poor education. Coffee tried to dispute that, but its obvious, and now he's harping on stereotype crap. People can also choose to change their opinion and educate themselves.

Yeah and? Being born black doesn't mean you are going to end up in jail or that you are a gangbanger. Being born latino doesn't mean you are a automatically a border jumper. THEY ARE STEREOTYPES. No one, including, myself, is arguing that there is a retarded amount of open racism in the "south", but to blanket every person born or living there as a bigoted racist is just as bad as any other stereotype. That IS what happens everytime there is a story from the south about racism. Hell, even if the story is from California, the south will get brought into it. Don't get me wrong, I UNDERSTAND why that happens, but Coffee has a right to be pissed about it.Illuminatus Primus wrote:You're a moron. The black population is disproportionately represented in this countries prison system and poor population, but if I posted an article with a black guy committing violence and dressed the link "Fuck the Criminal Niggers", or even just "Fuck the Criminal Blacks", I would be probably be instabanned.
It is a stereotype/generalization that I can back up with numbers and graphs, articles and whatever else I need. However if that was posted and a black member started posting as Coffee has, you would all be on board. That is the point I believe Coffee is making. It is the point I am trying to make. Why shouldn't he be just as offended as a black guy? Or anyone else who had a general derogatory comment slung his was. AGAIN.
Like I said in my first post, it is a stereotype that should be just as unacceptable as any other.

I can think of several threads where a good deal of Japanese men are referred to as antisocial, misogynist fucks, where Malaysia is maligned, etc. Apparently these don't exist, or they just haven't gotten around to banning everyone involved with that. Or... no, it's completely and utterly different. Yeah, that's right.TithonusSyndrome wrote:Oh, you know this for a fact, eh? Well then DR6, fucker; give me a thread with an example of a banning or an unambiguous threat of banning being levied against a user who made comparatively disparaging remarks about Africa or Asia. Except that his point falls flat once you realize NO ONE HAD ONCE CLAIMED THAT EVER SOUTHERNER WAS A BIGOTED, RACIST, CONFEDERATE FLAG WAVING, INTOLERANT ASSHOLE. Someone said that the Confederate South was a bunch of the above, and that is entirely true. Now why don't you two fucks prybar those giant-ass bugs out from your rectums and try to wrap your petulant little minds around the fact that "Confederate Southerner" =/= "Every single person who lives in, was born in, or has spent significant time in the southern US".Havokeff wrote:Coffee's issue is being labeled by a stereotype. He is a southerner that is the exact opposite of the "southern" stereotype, as he is not a bigoted, racist, confederate flag waving, intolerant, asshole. Why shouldn't he take offense to it? The saying "the South is full of ignorance and bigotry" is an informed generalization, not a stereotype. IF I were to say "Southerners are racists" or "Southerners hate gays" - that would be a stereotype. As it happens I'm technically a Southerner and Latino, Coffee would just rather tell himself stories about how Alabama in general and rural Alabama is somehow no different from the rest of North America - this is bullshit of the highest order. It IS worse, and measurably and significantly so. He DID try to claim it was not culturally more tolerant of racism and homophobia and that is just flat-out absurd.havokeff wrote:Yeah and? Being born black doesn't mean you are going to end up in jail or that you are a gangbanger. Being born latino doesn't mean you are a automatically a border jumper. THEY ARE STEREOTYPES.
When Southerners start treating blacks and gays better, the rest of the country will think better of them. It is WORSE there than elsewhere. Saying Africa is full of tribal primitivism and fucked up is crude, but is considered perfectly acceptable. Southerners just expect the rest of us to sit around tell them that "Southern pride" is okay. Let's stop bullshitting: the historical symbols that people "proud" of the South like to wave are the flag of a rebellion against the United States to perpetuate the chattel slavery of blacks. Within living memory they barred blacks from equal protection under the law and fair civil accomodation - UNTIL THIS DECADE gays were criminalized throughout the South - until very recently anti-miscegenation laws remained on the books were repealed by NARROW margins.havokeff wrote:No one, including, myself, is arguing that there is a retarded amount of open racism in the "south", but to blanket every person born or living there as a bigoted racist is just as bad as any other stereotype. Saying that black America is full of sympathy and even erstwhile enthusiasm for thuggery and criminality is not controversial and comparable to my statement about Southerners. It may be impolitic, but Mike has said it, and the fact is you routinely have beyond-the-shadow-of-a-doubt cop killers, asshole celebrities, and general lowlives being championed as black community leaders. That IS fucked up, and common in black America, and a FAIR generalization. Remember all the Atlantans crowing over the "unfair" treatment of Michael Vick?havokeff wrote:The black population is disproportionately represented in this countries prison system and poor population, but if I posted an article with a black guy committing violence and dressed the link "Fuck the Criminal Niggers", or even just "Fuck the Criminal Blacks", I would be probably be instabanned.
There's a difference between a fair generalization about a cultural group and a catagorical claim about all members of that group being a certain way or prone to certain behaviors simply because of their origins or incidental characteristics.havokeff wrote:It is a stereotype/generalization that I can back up with numbers and graphs, articles and whatever else I need. Since it's being discussed here anyway...
On a personal note, and this may be different for most people. I don't tend to start generalizing until we get to at least 66-75% of a population size. Fifty-one percent IS a majority, but I don't really consider it a large enough population to generalize about a whole community. Your mileage may vary.
Of course, the South probably has more than 66 or even 75% of a fundie redneck bias, so...
Another example that I'm sure Coffee would point to. It wasn't even a worthwhile contribution. Just "Hey, look, Florida sucks, and this topic isn't even about Florida." Talking trash about the South is great. Talking trash about specific states that are/have been doing stupid things...they deserve it. Certainly Florida deserves it on its own merits. But that shit wasn't even relevant, and it's the kind of stereotypical crap Coffee's pointing to.Superman wrote:I would have guessed Florida, but I guess Texas isn't very far away.

You know what? I grew up in Florida. The "south" part of Florida (meaning central Florida, as the farther north you go geographically, the farther south you get culturally) and not only wasn't I offended by Superman, I laughed because it's fucking true. I remember hearing all sorts of fucked up shit when I lived there. Guys getting their dicks stuck in pool filters, naked corpses found in Shamu's tank at Seaworld, and all manner of other morbid oddities. Half the time when I hear fucked up shit on national news, it's coming from somewhere in Florida. It's a fucked up state.
As far as this "insulting the south for being full of racist, homophobic, inbred hicks is just as bad as racism" shit goes... No. When I hear about a woman who declined a marriage proposal getting acid flung in her face I think "Must be the middle east". When I hear about widespread crime and rioting, I think "Must be Detroit". And when I hear about a Principal targeting homosexual students for harassment I think "Must be the south".
Why? Because culturally the south fosters and tolerates bigotry far more than any other area of the country on a widespread basis. Can you find instances of bigotry in other places? Of course, and usually when people hear about it they say something along the lines of "Wow, I'm surprised that isn't from the south".

Amazing. I've been away for a couple of days and the thread's basic point of disagreement hasn't changed one iota. Havokeff and Mr. Coffee both think that it's always unreasonable to make a generalization unless one hundred percent of the target population is accurately characterized by it.
Of course, this idiotic rule means it's virtually impossible to make a generalization about any group. In fact, with their brain-damaged 100% rule in place, you can't even say that Americans are capitalists. But that doesn't stop the Tard Twins, oh no sir! Because they're full of righteous anger over a stereotype, and the fact that their rule would be completely absurd if applied to any other generalization doesn't appear to bother them at all.
The fact is that the American Confederate South is a region, with a distinct culture, and the idea that there are no particular distinguishing features of that culture (such as the racist heritage of the Confederate era or the religious influence of the Southern Baptist Church or their horrible deep-fried diet or their fondness for the Confederate flag) is simply idiotic. I suppose Mr. Coffee and Havokeff think that the South only has distinguishing cultural features if they are good features, not bad ones.

No shit. When people say that northern Alberta is characterized by paunchy, hostile, homophobic nouveau riche rednecks and drunken deadbeat natives, I don't immediately get in a huff over how there's tiny pockets of decent upstandin' country folk here and there that have little or no effect on the overall makeup of the population that the assessment overlooks. I say "goddamn straight" and face facts. I don't feel the comment is directed towards me because I am not any of the above and I know it. What reason is there for me to be offended then? I made it out of there alive, it should come as a compliment and high remark on my ability to overcome bullshit.Flagg wrote:You know what? I grew up in Florida. Replace "the south" in that sentence with "Christians" and see if the argument sounds familiar.
