Of course, Timelords have been retconned as being able to spot one another. Ingenious . So that's another explanation, and as far as can be reached, since I doubt they'll go with "Chameleon arch to protect her from the war", this isn't a major character for the show's current audience.Crazedwraith wrote:One word: RegenerationBounty wrote:I know about that. No mention of it, but we can maybe take it as a given, what with those Sontarans being entirely encased in metal suits.DEATH wrote:No, no mention of that. I didn't like how useless Sontaran Armour turned out to be, though.
I'd rather they doled out Torchwood's particle guns.
"You have bullets! The Sontarans have lasers..." "We have particle guns too... Sergeant Major! Deal them out!"
I agree, the Sontarans went down too hard, but I suppose we can assume that these guys just let their guard down. Commander Scorr did seem to be having too much of a wank about what a game it was to begin with and if anyone is going to be using bastic bullets it's going to be UNIT.

Susan's most unlikely to be even vaguely human. She was brought up on Gallifrey.DEATH wrote:The original series of Dr.Who (Series 1) had him travelling with his (human?) grand-daughter, Susan. It's been ignored (along with whetehr he's a half human) for a loooong time. But should be interesting.

UNIT had whole bunch of specialty rounds by the time of the 7th Doctor. I'm not bothered that they had a bunch of exotic high performance armour piercers given the latest rounds of alien invasions.

I though RAD Steel was the jacket. In the Whoverse, with flying UN aircraft carriers and such they could be jacketing some pretty mean rounds.NecronLord wrote: I'm pretty sure RAD Steel really exists, though it may be a brand name. It's not spacedy or fantastic.

Yeah, it could have been super-tech. But it wasn't said to be. Occam suggests the Sontarans armour is... actually just a muscle suit.

Considering they make a big deal of going into battle bare skinned and have contempt for human soldiers' protection, Occam seems to merely suggest "inadequate against UNIT bullets."NecronLord wrote:Yeah, it could have been super-tech. Blame Davies for that, along with their height, and possibly the fact that it was Donna's mother who broke the window, since he comments on being proud of the theme of the mother saving the day while the men panic.fnord wrote:What the hell was with the Sontaran haka?

That was fun.
Why doesn't a spaceship have sealed compartments that would render the air bomb useless?
So how's The Doctor's kid surviving the time war, more magic pocketwatches?

Meh, this was average compared to the previous episode. I suppose if a source book mentions that the UNIT guns themselves were super it might save some of the stupidity of the Sontarans being beaten so easily even though they supposedly have been fighting for millenia. It makes it that much harder to suspend disbelief.
So what was wrong
1) The doctor doesn't use the sonic screwdriver to simply blow up a glass window. We see from "Bad Wolf" it clearly can do some serious damage. WTF was the Doctor thinking. This is just creating false tension and is bad writing.
2) the Sontarans get arse raped once UNIT brougt in guns immune to the corderlin signal. The Sontaran "armour" should actually be tough rather than just a goddamn body suit. What should have happened is either
a) UNIT pulls out some super dooper guns (thats sarcasm before someone jumps up and down and accuses me of twinking up UNIT) which we know are super because they fire goddamn energy beams and win because they have more troops. OR
b) the Sontarans are winning against the UNIT and then they call in air support with the Valiant knocking them out. I mean its not like UNIT haven't called in air support when the going gets tough re : "Seeds of Doom".
Aside from the Valiant's opening salvo it looked like it was overkill given how easily UNIT won, ie it wasn't needed except to clear the gas.
3) The Sontarans needing to scramble the nuclear codes when they could have simply moved their ship out of range. The ATMOS system had already been activated, so all they needed to do was wait it out and then humans die. Instead they had to send troops down to protect Martha.
Note if the humans do suddenly decide to use a scorch Earth policy then it becomes necessary to send troops in. Heck, they could have built a conversation around this. But just in case they still want a battle scene...
STAAL : The planet is going nuclear
SKOR : Should we move the ship out of range?
STAAL : No. The humans may decide to use nuclear weapons on their own planet to deny it to us.
SKOR : They would do that? I had not thought them capable of being a true military species
STAAL : Do not underestimate them. Scramble their launch codes and protect the operative.
4) The gas converter destroys the Sontaran ship by making the air inside it flammable. What did the Doctor convert it into. The same magic Briar Patch gas Riker used against the Sona. Or what is the ship made of?
I know this is a small point when people are interested in big explosions, but it would have been better if the blast only kills the Sontarans but the ships main structure is intact. After wards the Doctor either destroys the ship or it will eventually fall to Earth to be among the alien tech humanity has acquired over the years.
5) Boy wonder redeems himself. This cliche is overdone, especially when you realise how many criminals suddenly turn a new leaf and so quickly. This guy is borderline sociopath. He thinks nothing of killing 53 people with the ATMOS device and sees nothing wrong with the Sontarans killing 6 billion people on Earth.
It would have been better if he is still deluded that he was right about people needing to die and humanity needs to start over, and admitting the only thing he did wrong was allying with the Sontarans.
The end could have UNIT mentioning that he would be tried for crimes and the court case will likely drag for years as its the first time a human has been charged with betraying the whole planet.

I know it's already been stated, but I cant' get over how utterly retarded a "worldwide nuclear grid" is that excludes Russia, but includes countries with no ICBM capability to speak of, and hardly any weapons at all - India, Pakistan, North Korea. Are they on fucking crack?
Anyway, it was refreshing that the UNIT ammunition killed the Sontarans good - and I did see bulletholes in the Sontaran suits, they were just hard to notice.

The only way that makes sense is if Russia specifically refused to be included in the nuclear grid, and it wouldn't take more than a few lines of dialogue to sort that.
Something like
"Still nothing from the Russians?"
"No, they refuse to hand over control of their weapons"
"Pity, well go ahead with the program"
