Xbox 360 file sharing problems...

Post by Natorgator »

So I have a folder full of videos on my PC that are shared to my Xbox. They're all added to my library and they all have identical rights on them. Only problem is, just two videos show up on the list on the Xbox instead of all 11. Anyone got any ideas how to fix it? I am pulling my hair out here. Almost all of the videos I have in my shared folder show up with no problems, except for this one. And of course it is the one I want to see most.

Well, is all your porn in formats readable by the 360?

Yeah, they'll need to be wmv or h.264 I believe; xvid isn't supported yet (at least, none of mine are). When I got my 360 I re-ripped or converted my media into h.264 and it works fine... ish.

Oh, if you're using a VGA-out cable, your 360 might have trouble resizing to fit the video image for some reason. I couldn't get video after December until I changed back to my component leads.

At a WAG, have you checked to see if the videos you can't see are encoded with some strange codex the X-Box doesn't understand?

Ha, it's actually not porn. It's P90x, which is exercise videos. I figured someone was gonna call me out.

They all came in the same pack, but I don't know how to check the codec it was made with. The thing is, they should at least show up on the file list...if they were an unrecognizable format, wouldn't they just show up and not play? (I do have some files that are like that.)

Xvid and DivX are supported now since the last update, which came out in the fall I believe.

Like I said, none of mine are. Nothing in my vast media collection that isn't wmv or h.264 works. As an aside, I have never seen the 360 list a file and be unable to play it (beyond 'download the update' or 'zomg playback broken on VGA cables). If I can see it, I can play it, but the hundreds of files that aren't h.264 don't even show up.

Interesting...so what did you use to convert them?

I either re-ripped them from the DVDs (which gives much better quality:size) or converted them with one of those trashware avi->mp4 converters you can get. The file size gets bigger and the quality usually drops a bit, though.

I'd heard that Xvid was supposed to be supported now, but none of them has ever worked. I haven't got around to re-ripping my ATHF DVDs, and none of those episodes work and the 360 claims the folder is empty.

Actually... I'm using the Zune Player media sharing instead of just the 'media centre' sharing. Maybe that's the difference? If I use media player it gives me a bunch of files I can't play, which is why I installed Zune just to make it easier to see what would/wouldn't work. Maybe Zune Player doesn't support Xvid or something, so won't expose them to the 360.

This must be the issue. What should I use to convert my videos?

Yes it is, atleast a media update for North America allows divx/xvid to play right off a disc, be streamed, etc...

Yeah thanks for that, shame it doesn't work through Zune Player as I've already detailed. Even your own article points out doesn't work through all vectors. It doesn't work through my Vista media sharing either.
