In the good old days of 40K a plasma weapon was just about as likely to vapourise you and your squad as it was to vapourise the enemy.

Made them a lot more interesting.

They don't. The pilot's entire body is housed inside the torso, held motionless while he or she uses their mental linkup to control the machine.
