Firefox question
Has anyone have Firefox spontaneously close out on them when accessing the web? Recently this has been happening while I'm using Firefox on my pc, and no Java applets were running either. What could be the reasons for that?

You didn't happen to get a window warning you about how Firefox violated Windows' Data Execution Prevention did you? I noticed that Firefox was randomly shutting down with that a few weeks ago. I looked around, but all I could find was how to completely shut it off, which didn't seem entirely safe. It so far has been awhile since it last happened, though.

Dunno what exactly's wrong with their site, but the Starcraft 2 site crashes firefox 99% of the time for me.

Firefox usually closes for me whenever I try to download something or save a file or some crap like that. I usually work around it but, it is really annoying.
To add I'm using Firefox 2.

The FF3 beta has been acting weird for me too, but hey, it's a beta. Sure, it seems to shut itself down when you try to load 15+ embedded YT vids (DAMN YOU!) but at least it's got elegant crash recovery.
This is your American humour, correct? IE7 is better than 6 by wide margin, but as a primary browser? You might want to try a full uninstall and reinstall if it continues, but my recommendation is to get [internet explorer].

It's of the type "firefox has experienced an error and must shut down", sometime related to xpcom.dll, although I have uninstalled, deleted and reinstalled Firefox twice and it still happens. It's also Firefox 2 latest update.DesertFly wrote:You didn't happen to get a window warning you about how Firefox violated Windows' Data Execution Prevention did you? I do keep IE 7.0 as a connection detection, but the browser setup of Firefox is just more familiar to use.
The only thing I can tell you is that those random crashes aren't supposed to happen and that I haven't experienced them - in the sense that I know what crashes the beta and can avoid. What version are you on?Firefox, on the other hand, is just a pain in the ass. It has crashed randomly on me the whole time I used it, and even when it is working correctly, it does a number of little and medium sized things I find annoying. On their own, the little things are mostly excusable; IE, konqueror, and every other browser I've used have little problems too. But, when combined with bigger problems like its decaying slowness (which might have been fixed in newer versions; I don't know since I never looked back) and instability as time passes, the question must be asked: would I rather spend a couple hours fixing this stupid browser, or spend a few minutes replacing it?
As for the speed issue, 2.0.X was a disaster, but the 3.0 betas are very snappy and memory-friendly, at least as far as I've experienced.
If it works for you, all for the better. I suppose we can all at least agree that it's a good thing IE7 has become a viable browser again.I chose the latter, and don't regret it at all.
Weird. I've never, ever had trouble with Firefox 2 crashing while downloading or saving a file. For that matter I've seldom had trouble with Firefox crashing while I was doing anything. I haven't tried the Firefox 3 beta yet.Schuyler Colfax wrote:Firefox usually closes for me whenever I try to download something or save a file or some crap like that. No stable Firefox version crashes when it downloads anything. His install is just messed up - my guess is he's got some kind of unwanted download manager mucking things up.Jaevric wrote:Weird. My Firefox 2 only crashes when some goddamn site has some goddamn embedded Windows Media crap. I'd disable it, but I have my reasons for leaving it on (one of them being related to that I'd rather use that than goddamn RealPlayer), and it doesn't really happen that often.
Oh yeah, Gmail fucks it up sometimes too, though that hasn't happened for a while now. That's more of a total freeze than a crash with an error message, though.

Get the beta. Seriously. It's head and shoulders above 2 even with the few quirks it has.Dooey Jo wrote:My Firefox 2 only crashes when some goddamn site has some goddamn embedded Windows Media crap. Yes. It's faster, it's got new features you'll actually use (go go gadget address bar!) and for a beta it's pretty stable.Bounty: Would you recommend the Beta to someone who got so pissed off at 2 that he went back to 1.5?
FF2 vs IE7 is indeed the reverse of the old situation... almost. But I'd recommend FF3 over IE7 any day of the week, even now that it's not finished yet.I find it amusing that Destructionater's post could have had Firefox and Internet Explorer swapped, reposted a few years ago, and it would have been just as true.

I am looking forward to Firefox 3, regardless.

Crashes a lot for me, but I'm on Linux where the flaky flash plugin is the root of all evil.

I also have a question about Firefox. I'm using the Release Candidate for Firefox 3, and I copied my profile from the version 2 install I have, and I had an extension called Tab Mix Plus, which featured a session saver, so I was using that instead of the built in session saver. But now that I upgraded to version 3, Tab Mix Plus is disabled, and the built in one is still disabled. So how do I re-enable it?

The newest dev build (0.3.6.1.080416) is compatible with 3.

I've switched to 3 yesterday, and so far I'm liking it a lot. Sure, some of my extensions got broken, but most of them already had updates available, and a few which didn't I don't really need that much.
So far, my main issue has been that the Silverlight plugin is unstable as hell, which is a problem since I need Silverlight for a project I'm on (before the MS bashing starts, they explicitly specify 1.5 and 2 compatibility, and not 3). Ah well, IEtab workaround for one more situation for now...

I really don't mean to necro but, I didn't want to start a new thread but basically, Firefox keeps closing when I do things like, find a picture and click save as, when I click browse on this site or photobucket, or when I download something. Basically any connection between the internet and my files closes it. What is that?
