30 minutes before the Earthquake in China...

Post by Ethereal41 »

Some locals caught these images on film. A few links for your viewing pleasure, sadly hosted on Youtube because it is the most convienient viewing medium. I'm curious as to what kind of phenomenon this could be. Possibly charged particles, as the description suggests?

My favorite comment is on the 2nd video:
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that about 50% of people posting at YouTube are completely crazy? A video of anything goes us and the loony toons come out of the woodwork to say that Jesus fired a space laser at the lizard people to warn us about the Olympics.
I've got an okay grasp of Mandarin. Ask me if you want any translate what they are saying and I'll do my best.
There is a better world out there, where we don't have to be slaves to an invisible man in the sky, where we can make decisions for ourselves and our society based on evidence, reason, and our own best judgment, devoid of what some shithead wrote two thousand years ago because he had a vision along side a desert road.
That's the country I want to live in, and it's well within our grasps as long as we stand up to be counted, fight the battles big and small, and realize that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. I look forward to seeing you all there on the other side.

Water vapour, perhaps? Unless you have a really funky composition and/or charge distribution, charged particles are not going to be rainbow coloured (water vapour viewed from the right angle, and with the right light conditions, however, is).

I suck at grammar at the moment. So sue me.

Dooey Jo is right. This is almost certainly just optic dispersion by the clouds; rainbow-colored clouds are rare but hardly unique.

Huh. Here I was thinking we had stumbled across a rare phenomenon that would help us predict stuff like this in the future.

How could atmospheric phenomenon be even remotely related to predicting earthquakes? Also, why are those youtube links broken? That's annoying as fuck.

Buh....

Enjoy your unbroken link.

I thought there was some rule about breaking links to pages with content that violated board rules (eg. homophobic/racist comments). Maybe I'm getting mixed up with some other board. Whatever.

Anyway is it such a huge effort to delete a space between two slashes?

Is it such a huge effort to figure out when breaking links is appropriate instead of being a condescending prick? :wanker:

I've read up on board policy and I think I understand the gist of link-etiquette. Thanks for your help in clearing this up.

It's just rainbow effects. You know, sunlight through water vapor. I can't locate my cloud and weather identification handbook at the moment to look up the proper name for the phenomena, but it has fuck-all to do with earthquakes. I see it every so often around here (although not prior to our recent quake) because I actually look at the sky with some actual observation instead of just a glance to see it's still there. This is an unusually extensive occurrence, normally the region of sky affected is much smaller.

If there had been no quake this video would have been on YouTube with "Oh, look at the pretty colors!" and the same percentage of flakes frothing at the mouth. It's not chemtrails, it's not plasma, it's not a weapon or aliens or any damn thing but sunlight passing through water vapor. What are clouds made of? Water vapor. The light and the viewer also have to be at the proper angles to each other as well

Here's an example from Tokyo in 2001:

Here's a bunch more on Google: Look at all the pretty colors!

Why, we have one strange occurance in the sky, followed by a devastating occurance on the ground! The colorful clouds must be a powerful omen!

Idiots like these are one reason why the earth is doomed.

Thanks. I've never seen a rainbow effect like that but your explanation and picture prove pretty conclusively it was nothing special.

Well, it's special in that you need high cirrus clouds in the correct location in the sky, and the sun at the proper angle for the effect to occur. So it's not a daily thing but rather in the category of things like sun dogs and heileigenschein. They're neat effects of sunlight and sky that could easily be missed, but once seen can be startling.

Maybe it just irritates me that so many people (and no, I'm not referring to the OP who was just being curious) take a totally benign and even PRETTY weather effect and morph it into something sinister. How sad they can't enjoy something beautiful that costs nothing and hurts no one.

It irritates me too. A couple years ago when the auroras were coming really far south, there were idiots who were calling the police when they saw it, asking if it was terrorist activity.

Cool, our newest condescending board shit head. I think Broom's right; there are a whole host of atmospheric phenomenon which cause pretty rainbow colored skies. People just got the idea that it's somehow connected to the earthquake.

I grew up in Los Angeles. I've been through several earthquakes. Never saw anything like this before any quake. Its a coincidence.

Come, come, Superman. I'll let "condescending shit head" slide, but I'm hardly the newest. I joined over two years ago. :D
