The original GiTS manga and anime were set in Japan, so it made sense for the main characters to be Japanese. If the live action version is going to take place in the US (which is very likely) I don't see why the Major wouldn't also have her nationality changed.

Tim Burton's 'Batman' starts when Batman has already been active for some time. The first 'Ghost in the Shell' movie starts when Kusanagi has already been a Section 9 member for some time (she likely is already skilled at ghost-hacking, if 'Stand Alone Complex' is anything to go by). The 007 films (with the obvious exception of 'Casino Royale') start when James Bond already has several years experience as a double-O.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

The Major has been in prosthetic bodies since she was a little girl - who knows when she was recruited into Section 9, but I wouldn't be surprised if she had been doing some sort of work along the same lines even before that.

In the original manga, Aramaki recruited Kusanagi after she assassinated someone Section 9 was about to arrest RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM; it's likely she already had several years' experience with wetwork (assassinations, kidnappings, etc.) by the time she joined Section 9.

I wonder if this will actually turn out any product, or if it will be vaporware like the rumored Neon Genesis Evangelion movie.

Personally, though, I wish there were anime adaptations of some Western stuff. I'd be interested in Seaquest DSV in anime form. (No, Blue Sub 6 does not count.)

Oh also put me down in the list of dumb people, I couldn't get into FLCL at all. I didn't get the humor at all, it just grated on me.

Well, there was the Witchblade anime.

That was pretty awful, though.
