I saw UO, I watched UO played, I talked about UO but never once have I ever set hand to keyboard to play UO in my own person.JLTucker wrote:You haven't played Ultima Online, Mr. Bean? And yes I jumped out of LOTRO, I saw it for what it was, World of Warcraft 1.17. It's shinnier, it's got new movies but it's still following the WOW forumal. Give me a World War II online shooter that does not look like baby-shit I say.
Give me a decent fucking SCI-FI MMORPG.

My first MMO was Planetarion, a text-based game which I played about 6-7 years ago along with my dad. Safe to say we wasted a year or so of waking up at odd hours to do stuff for our alliance, 4FS (and later 4D) which was the #1 reported alliance (Until the last few weeks of the game, when the 'hidden' big alliances, like Fury and Legion, finally showed their colors). Like "5AM, wake up and start building dreadnoughts because the factory's complete". Or "Get up, we've got incoming hostiles, log on our galaxy-mates' accounts and organize a defense". This worked because, hell, I was in 7th grade, and he was not working, as he was on Disability at the time.
After that, I stayed away from MMOs for a good long while, and in the past few months started playing AirRivals. You guys probably would recognize it by the name Space Cowboy, or its brief name "Flysis", which was eventually changed because of its similarity to Crysis. It's a Korean space fighter sim MMO - it's best described as "StarFox Online, minus the furries, but with added engrish, and SPACE BEES!". I play with the Goons there, on their Ventrilo server, but lately I've just been bored as hell with it, seeing as our nation consistently beats the other nation in everything we do, like a redheaded stepchild. Plus it's a Korean MMO, so the grind is pretty terrible. Which led me to try...
Saga. This is potentially the first MMOCRTS. That's right, MMO Collectible RTS. You buy booster packs of 11 ingame units for $3 a pop. Or you could go to a third-party retailer and pay them money directly for the exact units you want. I've spent about $20 on the game, in units from one of those third parties. The game is nominally $20 just to get the fully registered version, but they're giving away 50,000 free accounts on FilePlanet, and I don't even think they've given away 10,000 of them. Think of it like a Fantasy version of the Total War games. I've had some fun lately with that, though I wish there were more goons playing and using Ventrilo. Ventrilo makes *EVERY* game better. Grinding isn't a big deal in this game, because the max level for a unit is capped at a very reasonable 10, and gaining units is a very simple process. You *could* go about things without spending a cent, and just using ingame gold to purchase units, but it's kinda a drag, really, especially at lower levels.

"The 4th Earl of Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

For some reason the idea of a 40k MMO just doesn't excite me like the Warhammer Fantasy MMO does, even though I find the 40k setting to be more interesting from a fluff standpoint.Losonti Tokash wrote:Well, they just announced a WH40k MMO, so that could be the answer to your prayers.

But with armor like tissue paper and upgrade costs that take 600 million race currency money...Here is a video from one of the former top guilds from the coolest looking race in my opinion. here is a video of the class I play, a Bellato wizard and here is a video the most powerful and expensive unit in the game.. an Orange MAU which hits like a truck
I played RF too and have a character for each of Bellato's specialty class - a tank (Sentinel), a ranger (Harrier), a mystic (Chandra) and a spec (Driver), all with complete equipment.
The reason that I quit is that every installer CD that I get from the distributor has been defective in one way or another. I already got 3 sets of installer CD's and all of them have been defective. Hey, at least those CD's were given away for free and I can use them for coasters.

Hmm.
I just ran across a Korean MMO named "FlyFF", with a free English version...the concept (especially the 'everyone can fly! broomsticks for everyone!') seems really appealing to me, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
Has anyone here played it? Is it any good, or should I give it a pass?

Flyff is.... how could I describe it? Well, as it was described to me: A game for girls.
Now, don't take it wrongly, it means that it is a cute fun game (one that girls enjoy playing because it is not so testosterone-laden as other titles), good for some casual playing.
I tried it, and for a Korean Free MMO, liked it a lot, specially how awfully cute my little witch was looking.
It's free, give it a try.
Oh, and the "it's a game for girls" description was given to me by girls who actually played it. So there.
As for the 40K MMO, it would be awesome if they focused on not making it like a future-flavored WoW. There's WW2 Online, wich has decent military combat simulation built in, hope they go that route.
I would have personally liked an Starcraft MMO, it would have provided a more MMO-friendly background (40K is way too complex), and being a Blizzard franchise, they would have dared go in a new direction, since they already have WoW to be like... WoW.

Also, there's not enough Wurm Online in this thread. To preface, let me say that this game will be an RPG. That needs to be said, because when someone thinks of a Warhammer 40,000 MMO there is definitely some question as to the style of play: will it be an FPS, an RTS, or some other genre altogether? Relic has the RTS angle covered with the awesome Dawn of War series - we are making an RPG.

The major draw for me is definitely the flight, though. I think I will try it out.

Indeed, I hadn't. And now that I have.... I really have mixed feelings about it... There's something in that article that screams "WoW with gunz!" to me.... Not sure what... Maybe that they keep being vague about everything like mostly every other MMO development that just tried to take a share of WoW's cake by appealing to the same demographic. They keep ranting about how innovative it is gonna be, how they'll make things fitting to what the fans expect... but at the same time keep saying that they can't deviate much from the MMO norm... and that line about "We won't include a race if we can't do it justice" just screams "No Tyranids!" to me.Commander 598 wrote: I take it you haven't heard...
I like 40k, and will definitely hate seeing Space Marines as a starter class (much like what they eventually did to Jedi on SWG), or my beloved Ork Boyz being mistreated as usual, in favour of the Manga-crowd-appealing Tau, or the "we have not enough units" Necron.
My statement regarding a 40k game is that, if they develop a game where I can play an Ork Speed Freek, and race other Ork Boyz in their bikes, then they might have got it. Oh, and make Space Marines a freaking unlockable class, have people play the Imperial Guard before letting them join the freaking elite!
But, it's just wishful thinking on my part

That seems to be everyone's thoughts on the matter.
My personal idea for a 40k MMO is something like Battlefield mixed WW2OL and DoW's campaign map with large tactical Battlefield style FPS maps in the place of the RTS maps. The FPS maps represent a region on the strategic map and you fight over the resources they provide, construct buildings to construct vehicles or take advantage of those resources, defenses etc. Also possible space combat and fighting over other planets in the system.
AND you can't play space marines from the beginning and if you suck at it (Repeatedly getting killed), you won't be playing one for long. Levels are replaced with rank and/or veterancy. If you suck you WILL be the meat shield for my more intelligent troops (Due to losing x amount of rank/veterancy on death). Rank/veterancy is acquired through victories not kill counts (Duping the enemy into attacking your well fortified region and losing counts as a victory). Rank/veterancy unlocks the expected things. Rank/veterancy will not affect weapon damage or vehicles (Except maybe for Orks because that feels kind of orky)

Orks in fact are the perfect race for the typical MMO "leet" player, a bunch of posing, bickering, language-butchering brutes who only care for being the meanest (and greenest). In fact, those "leet" players would probably burst in flames when it dawns on them that they'd be ROLEPLAYING.
The DoW style conquest map was a concept I had too, wich would be awesome.... But if the guys developing Wh40k MMO want to do something different than the WaR MMO.... we may not get a conflict (RvsR), but rather.... another WoW (has anyone ever seen the actual frontlines of the war that is suposedly taking place in the WoW world? And no, BGs don't count, if you read the fluff, they are small skirmishes. Players are NOT the army).
Unlockable classes are not new to the genre at all, but I bet in a move to please the whinny "I want to be a cool Space Marine" babies, they'll make it ludicrously easy to be one.... and thus you'll get a bunch of power-armor clad marines prancing about, jumping like bunnies, and spouting nonsense and offensive emotes.... Cool Marines, indeed.
All this makes the baby Emperor cry....

I hope they don't go the WHMMO route and just pick one group from each faction. I'm not going to play Warhammer Fantasy MMO because it doesn't give me the ability to choose my own path, I frankly couldn't give a shit about Tzeentch, give me a Champion of Khorne.
Specifically, I'd like to see you be able to choose your main faction and give a list like so: Imperium, Chaos, Eldar, Orkz, Tau Empire, Dark Eldar, Hive Fleet.
Then you choose a sub-faction, say Imperium and it would give you a list like so: Imperial Guard, Ecclesiarchy, Adeptus Assassinorum, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Adeptus Astra Telepathica.
Then we break it down even more, for example for a Guardsman you'd get to choose from a number of famous planets to hail from: Armageddon, Attila, Harakoni, Cadia, Catachan, Elysia, Jant Normanidus, Jopall, Kanak, Krieg, etc. or Commisar Cadet and Stormtrooper Cadet.
Now based upon those choices it determines your starter equipment, basic appearance, and some bonus skills. From the basic rank of trooper you can specialize into Infantry, Grenadier, Artillery, Armoured Crewman, Heavy Weapons Specialist, Scout, and Marksman. It also determines a starter city for you. Obviously a Commisar or Stormtrooper Cadet would get sent to a random city.
Another idea I had for the guard specifically was a synergy bonus, wherein you get a bonus to your abilities for teaming with member of the same regiment. A Commisar could only get the bonus if he wore a specific item of familiarity to the troops he's with, for example a Krieg gas mask would allow him to get a bonus when teamed with Kriegers. Stormtroopers would only get the binus with other ST's, since they're going to be better than your average Grenadier because of stealth and deep-strike abilities.
The more I think of ways to make a great 40k MMO game, the more ambitious and difficult actually developing it seems. Also the more likely it seems the game will probably suck.

A Certain Clique, HAB, The Chroniclers
They could break the content up in different expansions/upgrades, and develop it gradually if the game has some success.
Problem is, for the game to suceed they'll try to pack as many iconic races/factions at launch as possible, and that's where the whole thing will become too silly/bland for actual Wh40k fans.
A decent start would be to have Imperium (minus marines) + Imperial Guard vs Space Orks, and then make expansions featuring, for example:
Eldar + Dark Eldar
Tau + Necron
Space Marines + Chaos Space Marines
Tyranids + Chaos Demons
As for WAR, I'm really hoping for future upgrades/expansions that include new races (namely, Skaven, undead, and the rest of the Chaos deities), but what they're proposing is a good starting option. I'm only interested in playing Orc, though.

Would it have to have different races ?
Theres a truly awesome amount of variety available simply from the existing organisations and factions of the Imperium.
It wouldn't really bother me if you made the initial playable "races" as humanity.
Space marines should absolutely, catagorically be unavailable to players, Marines aren't RPG characters, they are fucking killing machines with a limited amounts of scope for independent marine activity.
If you want to be a power armoured killer, you don't need to be a marine, Bounty hunters, Inquisitors, Rogue Traders etc have all been featured with it.
named Assassin temples should be unavailable as well, such individuals are rarer than marines, and typically have a large infrastructure and fixed mission goals. Eversors for example get bloody frozen/put into stasis between their missions. Assassins are very suitable for a FPS or third person shooter, but totally shit for an RPG, Culexus assassins are sociopathic freaks who project a barely restrained aura of fear and loathing, and cause psykers to bleed out from the eyes and ears when they are around, or send Eldar in foaming spasms!
The idea of Nids as a player faction is frankly absurd, the best you can stretch to is Stealer hybrids, even then its retarded.
Its just a really big stretch to see them doing justice to any of the alien races, although some do lend themselves to it, Eldar do wander off on their own to adventure and explore, and can often bring skill sets with them they've learned previously. But Tau ? Orks ? Freaking Dark eldar ? Unless the model is very different, its difficult to believe its workable.
Never mind the issues with "loot", you won't find even an Inquisitorial minion or Inquisitor strapping on some Exarchs battlesuit, or even guardian armour after kicking their arse, similarly some chaos dudes horrific suit of fused human skin and bone!
I'm awaiting the advent of the Warhammer MMORPG with interest, because its Realm versus realm approach seems to be a much more suitable way to approach things, allowing you to adventure against your selections traditional enemies, as well as within the domain of your own side, and other non-aligned regions. It also should have to address the above loot issue.
Negativity aside, it'd be really quite awesome to be a Tech-Priest if you could have a Servitor as a customisable "pet", and your ability tree was upgrades reflected in your appearance, like the mutations for chaos characters in the warhammer one.
