When Pasco authorities began investigating the wrecked Cadillac, whoever crashed it was already gone. The car sat empty and banged up Wednesday near a damaged power pole at Hudson Avenue and Little Road.
Then, someone called the Sheriff ’s Office to report the Cadillac stolen. The caller was told to come to the crash scene. Wade Jeffrey Whitman arrived, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports, and revealed pieces of his previous night’s activities.
The 33-year-old Hudson man said he’d been to Hudson Beach. On his way home, he got into a wreck. He didn’t remember how it happened.
When he woke up in the car, Whitman said, he panicked and called someone to pick him up. That resulted in his first charge: leaving the scene of a crash.
Next, investigators noticed Whitman had bloodshot eyes and his balance was poor. They had him perform field sobriety tests, which he failed. Charge: driving under the influence.
Whitman remained in jail Thursday in lieu of $1,000 bail.
