Doctor Who SE30E08: "Silence in the Library"

Post by Bounty »

Starring That Guy from James Bond and That Woman from ER. Also, written by That Guy from all those awesome shows.

With a pedigree like that, it'd better be good.

Huh. Shades of The Time Travellers Wife.

Is this thing all in this girl's head?
"So you want to live on a planet?"
"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."
"Aren't they dangerous? Don't they get hit by stuff?"

I'm not sure which is creepier; the ghosting or the Vashta Nerada.

So, ales Kingston is a future companion? I'd like to see that.

This is easily the best episode of the series so far. I don't care how goofy the trailer for next week looks, if Moffat can make the conclusion half as good as the first half it just can't go wrong.
So, [...]? I'd like to see that.
Agreed. I'm not convinced that's what they're setting up, but it certainly would work from what we've seen this episode.

Is the jury still out on whether Moffat could save this show from itself?

Fuck. No.

I want more now! Bastard, Moffat!

I love how he tied this with something else in real-life so as to make kids scared of sunbeams, shadows and statues now. The "ghosting" was quite an effective way of adding tension and emotion, even if it seems useless compared to, say, a soulkeeper like the Culture uses for saving mental engrams.

And who the hell is that woman?

Yep.

He's consistently written the best Doctor Who of the last 4 years.

Which is why we know there's a God because Moffat is taking the throne.

I get the distinct impression she's way more than just a companion to him, in the future that is. Whenever that will be.

Well she said she'd been to the end of the universe with the Doctor so the list of candidates we've seen so far is:

- Martha Jones (Though why wouldn't she say who she is?)
- Captain Jack (Sex change?)
- The Master (Regeneration?)
- Someone at the end of the universe they met when they went there last season.
- Someone completely different

I'm going with this one.

He hasn't met her yet, he could always go to the end of the universe again in the future. As long as it's somewhere else at the end of the universe to where he went last time. Don't want any paradoxes now.

I don't think Moffat is lame enough to pull the "hur hur someone we met before" trick. The Doctor's lived for centuries, he'd have met loads of people; I actually like them acknowledging that there's a chance the Doctor meets someone from his own future.

Her having his screwdriver certainly suggests they were more than just Tardis buddies...

It's kinda not the first time he's done it.

I imagine the concept came to him after the little joke at the end of Blink.

Problem for me is that it's inevitable that Tennant is going to leave before he gets noticibly that much older.

Well... they could always go on a bit of a hiatus and not kill him on screen....

Or she travelled with a future regeneration that looked (will look? Willan on-look?) older.

Possibly, but she seemed to recognise him off the bat.

Although the "i've never seen you this young" comment could mean she's seen multiple regenerations and she just saw a Man and Woman somewhere they shouldn't be and put put two and two..

She also knew about Donna, so maybe she and future-Doc went through the photo album together :o

A good episode - suffered a little from being a 1st part, felt like it was rushing to include stuff so that it could get to the 2nd part, but over all, pretty good.

Major complaints: the soundtrack - it might be excellent music, but they just keep blaring it out constantly so that you can't really hear whats being said. The scene with the books flying around was a prime example; the music was screaming 'OMG! Horror and tension', but the scene on its own was whispering 'minor action occurring'.

The first ghosting scene was probably the finest scene of this whole series though.

Certainly better than the other episodes; the only one that's had me glued to it so far, but it did seem to be stumbling over itself to set up episode 2, which means next week should hopefully be excellent.
