1) 1 average unarmed (AKA no powerfist) Space Marine from any Chapter you wish vs 1 Sentinel. CQB fight to death. Who wins?
2) Battle of Zion. The Zion defenders, including the big honking gun in the middle and all the APUs are waved away. In their place is a Space Marine chapter of your own choosing. They get a week to prepare for the defence of Zion. The SMs get their standard equipment, and weapon founderies are inside the city, so they can make the modifications for ammunition and such. At the end of a week, the 250,000 sized Sentinel force invades, bent on total destruction. Who wins?
A) Vehicles (the ordinary quantity available to a chapter) included.

Is he unarmored, too? I'm not sure how he could kill the Sentinel with his bare hands ; Then again, we have no idea how "strong" the Sentinels really are. All in all, they have a lot of arms and a built-in laser, so one could, most likely, pin a Marine down and fry him.hongi wrote:1) 1 average unarmed (AKA no powerfist) Space Marine from any Chapter you wish vs 1 Sentinel. Unless he manages to spit acid into its optical sensors.
He...hehehe.....hehehehehehehehe.hongi wrote:2) Battle of Zion. The Zion defenders, including the big honking gun in the middle and all the APUs are waved away. They have weapon foundries and full 1000 Marines available? Jesus, man...
The Marines can achieve the objective of the defenders by simply destroying the giant drills with their plethora of heavy weapons. Shoot enough heavy munitions at them, and you are bound to damage something vital.
Hell, if they have the entire chapter, they just fire some special munitions at the things and take them out with the first salvo. Then there are various anti-electronic means of combat, and of course...Librarians.
With a week to prepare, the Marines can build proper fortifications, emplace heavy bolters and stockpile as much ammunition as possible. They are armored, which means they have to be individually pinned down and cracked open with Sentinel lasers. Even if we assume their lasers can crack open Space Marine armor, they will work in groups and out of prepared positions, which means they can easily shoot Sentinels pinning down their battle-brothers. Zion guns were easily enough to destroy Sentinels, bolters will rape them.
After the drills are destroyed, it's just a matter of mopping up the Sentinels. It gets even easier if the Marines retreat into tight corridors and massacre Sentinels there, but it may not even be necessary.
An even more horrible massacre ensues.hongi wrote:A) Vehicles (the ordinary quantity available to a chapter) included.
They can do that easily with 1000 Battle-brothers. Easier if you include a chapter like the Dark Templars, who maintain something like 7000 brothershongi wrote:B) Vehicles not included.

Re: Space Marine vs Sentinels
For the purposes of this I will assume my Chapter of choice, Imperial Fists.
The Space Marines scoff at the proscribed mission objective and instead launch a pre-emptive strike on the machine city. The entirety of Holy Terra is liberated inside of 48 hours with statistically insignificant casualties.
Honestly, pitting an entire Space Marine Chapter against low-end nonsense like the Matrix machines? That's just sadism.
It took Sentinels quite awhile to peel through the ship in the original film. Assuming the ship was made of steel and similar alloys, an armored Space Marine should be able to take down a Sentinel without too much difficulty.hongi wrote:1) 1 average unarmed (AKA no powerfist) Space Marine from any Chapter you wish vs 1 Sentinel. Why do you hate the Matrix? Wait, don't answer that.2) Battle of Zion. The Zion defenders, including the big honking gun in the middle and all the APUs are waved away. The Marines dig in and annihilate the attacking machine force. Using scavenged materiel, they wage a methodical global war and Holy Terra is liberated within a few months with few casualities.B) Vehicles not included.

Heh...if they have vehicles, they can possibly launch haywire missiles from their Whirlwinds into the tunnel the Machines dug from the surface...hehe...The Space Marines scoff at the proscribed mission objective and instead launch a pre-emptive strike on the machine city. That's gonna turn the assault force into a huge underground rust deposit.
And, of course, the machines' brilliant "Unable to shoot at ballistic targets" would make the city a great target for standoff artillery.

Armored but unarmed? The Space Marine stabs the Sentinel to death with a combat knife.

Re: Space Marine vs Sentinels
The correct question is not 'how long will it take to wipe out 250,000 lightly armed and armoured floating bots', it is 'how long will it take the Space Marines to destroy the entire machine civilisation and recapture Earth in the name of The Emporer'. The Matrix combatants are really that pathetic.hongi wrote:2) Battle of Zion. The Zion defenders, including the big honking gun in the middle and all the APUs are waved away. You know, when I first read this I thought "Marines vs IG Sentinels... not fair on the sentinels unless it's open terrain". Then I saw it was against the Matrix sentinels. Oh boy...
1) Depends on how strong the sentinel is. That laser of theirs didn't seem amazing, but they're physically quite strong and can fly around too. Even if they're not strong enough enough to kill the Marine, they could pick him up and toss him around, drop him etc.
2) What Brother-Captain Gaius said. The Marines have far superior equipment, tactics & personnel: the machines do not AFAIK have any counter to things like artillery, let alone a squadron of Thunderhawk Gunships providing air support and redeploying squads etc. Even worse, the sentinels are coming through from just a few bottlenecks.
